Book excerpt: Charles Brockden Brown (1771–1810) was a key writer of the revolutionary era and early U.S. republic, known for his landmark novels and other writings in a variety of genres. The Collected Writings of Charles Brockden Brown presents all of Brown’s non-novelistic writings—letters, political pamphlets, fictions, periodical writings, historical writings, and poety—in a seven-volume scholarly set. This series’ volumes are edited to the highest scholarly standards and will bear the seal of the Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions (MLA-CSE). The Literary Magazine and Other Writings, volume 3 of the series, presents a selection of Brown’s published writings between 1801 and 1807. The majority of the volume is devoted to texts that appeared in The Literary Magazine, and American Register, which Brown edited from October 1803 to December 1807, through fifty-one issues. The volume also includes a number of additional non-fiction pieces that Brown wrote during this period: a significant review essay in the 1801 American Review, and Literary Journal; a series of articles in the 1802 Port Folio; anda biographical sketch of Brown’s late brother-in-law, John Blair Linn, which was published with Linn’s book-length poem Valerian in 1805. The majority of these texts have not been in print since the early nineteenth century, and never have they been accorded this level of textual and editorial scrutiny.

Letters and Early Epistolary Writings, volume 1 of the series, presents, for the first time, Brown’s complete extant correspondence along with three early epistolary fiction fragments. Brown’s 179 extant letters provide essential context for reading his other works and a wealth of information about his life, family, associates, and the wider cultural life of the revolutionary period and Early Republic. The letters document the interactions of Brown’s intellectual and literary circles in Philadelphia and during his New York years, when his publishing career began in earnest. The correspondence additionally includes exchanges with notables including Thomas Jefferson and Albert Gallatin. The volume's three epistolary fragments are the earliest examples of Brown’s fiction and are transcribed here for the first time in complete and definitive texts. The volume’s historical texts are fully annotated and accompanied by Historical and Textual Essays, as well as other appended materials, including the most complete and accurate information available concerning Brown’s correspondents and family history. The scholarly work informing this volume establishes significant new findings concerning Brown, his family and friends, and the circumstances of his development as a major literary figure of the revolutionary Atlantic world.

Each edited text provides detailed information concerning publication history, provenance, and attribution, along with extensive scholarly annotation. A Historical Essay locates the pamphlets in the wider contexts of Brown’s literary career, the print culture of the Revolutionary Atlantic world, and the literary history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while a Textual Essay provides full bibliographical information on the sources for all copy-texts, as well as extensive description of the editorial protocols. Download or read book Revolution and the Word written by Cathy N. Davidson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolution and the Word is the classic study of the co-emergence of the U.S. nation and the new literary genre of the novel. The book remains the foundational study of reading, writing, and publishing in the new republic and provides a unique glimpse of the culture of early America. By looking at everything from publishers' account books to marginalia scrawled in eighteenth-century books to the novels themselves, Revolution and the Word provides an engaging social history of early American readership that is also informed by the most insightful aspects of literary theory. With a backward glance at the culture wars and prognostications for what lies ahead, the comprehensive introduction of this expanded edition reframes Revolution and the Word for a new generation of scholars. It revisits topics of dissent in the early national period, the status of the Constitution as a document designed to quell the still-burning passions of the American Revolution, and the role played by the novel in publicizing and articulating complex desires not addressed at the Constitutional Convention. Cathy N. Davidson provides readers with a survey and critique of the controversial and productive thought in cultural, social, and political theory as it has evolved during the last twenty years. This astute and learned assessment of recent developments in literary and historical scholarship, colonial and postcolonial studies, race theory, gender and sexuality theory, class studies, cultural studies, and history of the book will make Revolution and the Word as urgent for this generation as it was for its original readers in 1986.

Download or read book Conspiracy and Romance written by Robert S. Levine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Levine examines the American romance in a new historical context. His book offers a fresh reading of the genre, establishing its importance to American culture between the founding of the Republic and the Civil War. With convincing historical and literary detail, Levine shows that anxieties about foreign elements--French revolutionaries, secret societies, Catholic immigrants, African slaves--are central to the fictional worlds of Brockden Brown, Cooper, Hawthorne and Melville. Ormond, The Bravo, The Blithedale Romance, and Benito Cereno are persuasively explicated by Levine to demonstrate that the romance dramatized the same conflicts and ideals that gave rise to the American Republic. Americans conceived "America" as a historical romance, and their romances dramatize the historical conditions of the culture. The fear that reputed conspiracies would subvert the order and integrity of the new nation were recurrent and widespread; Levine illuminates the influence of such fears on the works of major romance writers during this period.
Download or read book Letters and Cultural Transformations in the United States 1760 1860 written by Sharon M. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illustrates the significance of epistolarity as a literary phenomenon intricately interwoven with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century cultural developments. Rejecting the common categorization of letters as primarily private documents, this collection of essays demonstrates the genre's persistent public engagements with changing cultural dynamics of the revolutionary, early republican, and antebellum eras. Sections of the collection treat letters' implication in transatlanticism, authorship, and reform movements as well as the politics and practices of editing letters. The wide range of authors considered include Mercy Otis Warren, Charles Brockden Brown, members of the Emerson and Peabody families, Margaret Fuller, Elizabeth Stoddard, Catherine Brown, John Brown, and Harriet Jacobs. The volume is particularly relevant for researchers in U.S. literature and history, as well as women's writing and periodical studies. This dynamic collection offers scholars an exemplary template of new approaches for exploring an understudied yet critically important literary genre.
