Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Alexander Hamilton, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is now many years ago that I first conceived the purpose of writing a Life of Alexander Hamil ton. The undertaking was repeatedly postponed with the intention of awaiting some period of lei sure; but as from year to year the prospect of that period seemed to recede rather than to approach I at last despaired of its ever arriving, and some four years ago entered upon my task without farther delay, and have since prosecuted it in such intervals as I could snatch from professional occupation. Doubtless the work could have been much better done by some student of American history who could have devoted his unbroken days to the topic, and made it the sole object of his reading and reflection. But as none such has appeared in nearly three quarters of a century, I have ventured to make my effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Alexander Hamilton The want of a complete and satisfactory yet suc cinct and popular life of Alexander Hamilton, has long been felt by the reading public; and when we remember the very eminent position which he occu pies in American history, it is somewhat singular that no attempt has been made to execute such a work. The Memoir published by his son, John C. Hamilton, is excellent as far as it goes; although it is not only unfinished, but is also too cumbersome and diffuse for the popular reader. The small work of Dr. Renwick, though well adapted to the purpose for which it was written, was necessarily very super ficial and incomplete. I am not aware that any other reliable Memoir of Hamilton is i8. Existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Epoch of Alexander Hamilton: A Historical Study The demand for a second edition of this volume follows so soon the publication of the first edition, that little time has been allowed for the careful revision which I should have wished to perform. It will be noticed, perhaps, that I have corrected the text in many instances; and changed some phrases which attracted attention rather by their novelty than, I trust, by any inaccuracy of speech. A few notes have been added, and the Index increased. When one writes upon a subject concerning which intelligent persons are free to form different, if not opposite, opinions, it is well that he should endeavor not only to be clearly understood, but to be equally careful that he be not misunderstood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Alexander Hamilton, Vol. 2 The War of the Revolution, as a scene of military movements, fades into insignificance before the conflicts of the elder Nations of the earth. It is as a var of Opinion - as the beginning of that great experiment in modern times, whether men are capable of self-government - that it assumes its immeasurable importance. A new World is seen rising into view - a World of Hope; and as the great lights that shone upon its morning path of advancing glory appear, the grateful inquiry is - Whose were those superior minds that, amid the darkness of a chaotic confederacy, combined the elements of Social order, and formed them into a vast majestic Empire? The Wealth of Nations is their illustrious few. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Hamilton By reason of these facts, the life of Hamilton was sure to be one of the most important vol umes of this series; and, since so much careful writing had been already done concerning him, the selection of his biographer demanded more than ordinary consideration. No one in the country had at that time made a more thorough study of Federalism than Mr. Lodge had done. His ancestor, George Cabot, had been one of the chiefs of the Federalist party in its strong hold of New England, and had been the in timate friend of Hamilton; and the testimony of the intimacy still lives upon Mr. Lodge's library wall in the shape of Trumbull's portrait of Hamilton, a present to George Cabot as a near and dear friend. Knowing well that, if Mr. Lodge was very naturally inclined to make a hero of Hamilton, he at least practiced a strictly intelligent and reasonable worship, I. Book The Conqueror Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Conqueror Vol 1 of 2 written by Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conqueror, Vol. 1 of 2: Being the True and Romantic Story of Alexander Hamilton Skeleton I unearthed in the 'old Common Records and Church Registers, still the fact remains that I did find the skeleton, which I have emphasised as far as is artistically possible. NO date is given nor deed referred to that cannot be found by other visitors to the Islands. More over, I made a careful study of these Islands as they were in the time of Hamilton and his maternal ancestors, that I might be enabled to exercise one of the leading principles of the novelist, which is to create character not only out of certain well-known facts of heredity, but out of understood conditions. In this case I had, in addition, an extensive knowledge of Hamilton's character to work backward from, as well as his estimate of the friends of his youth and of his mother. Therefore I feel confident that I have held my romancing propensity well within the horizon of the probabilities; at all events, I have depicted nothing which in any way interferes with the veracity of history. However, having unburdened my imagination, I Shall, in the course of a year or two, write the biography I first had in mind. No writer, indeed, could assume a more delightful task than to chronicle, in any form, Hamilton's stupendous services to this country and his infinite variety. G. F. A. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Alexander Hamilton, Vol. 2 of 2 But however inferior were the journals of that day to those of our own, it must be acknowledged that the former enjoyed one great advantage in the custom which prevailed for men of' the highest dis tinction in public life to use them as vehicles for disseminating Opinions among the people. Many in stances of this occur at once to memory, notably the numerous papers constituting the Federalist, which appeared at first as newspaper letters under the signature of Publius. While John Adams was vice-president of the United States he engaged in enterprises of this kind, contributing a series of ar ticles concerning French politics, known as the Dis courses on Davila. Indeed, so universal was the prac tice that Mr. Hildreth says that, of all the men of the Revolution capable of producing a newspaper essay, Jefferson was, perhaps, the only one who never touched pen to paper for the political enlightenment of the contemporaneous public. His preference was for correspondence. He practised political letter writing as an art, making it so efficient and manifest ing in it so much skill as would have called forth the Sincere admiration of Machiavelli. If one could give him the benefit of honorable motives, it would be necessary to praise his behavior in this respect; for anonymous political writing in the newspapers by prominent or responsible members of the government is a custom much to be deprecated. All that can be said is that the rules of that era permitted it; and when vice-president Adams and Mr. Secretary Hamilton furnished anonymous columns to editor Fenno, they did only what they had ample precedent for doing, and what the faulty taste of the times permitted.
