Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of William Law Symonds The design of publishing a book of the selected writings of William Law Symonds was formed some time after his death, in 1862; but the Civil War in our country was then raging and the time was unpropitious for the execution of any literary purpose involving public attention. An intimate friend of the deceased author, - Mr. Robert Carter, prominent among the writers who were at that time working for the newspaper press and the booksellers of New York, - undertook to collect his writings and to prepare a memoir of the writer; but obstacles intervened to impede him in the prosecution of the work and, ultimately, he felt constrained to abandon it. As years passed, circumstances became less and less auspicious for the publication as at first proposed. Friends of Mr. Symonds were dispersed by fortune or removed by death. The literary reputation that he had acquired, - not at any time extensive, though, within a limited circle, unquestionably brilliant, - was, practically, forgotten. The project slept. Now, at the distance of forty-six years since his death, the work he performed and the publicity it obtained are unknown, and, to the general public, the mention of his name would be mention of the name of a stranger. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging look at how debates over the fate of literature in our digital age are powerfully conditioned by the nineteenth century's information revolution What happens to literature during an information revolution? How do readers and writers adapt to proliferating data and texts? These questions appear uniquely urgent today in a world of information overload, big data, and the digital humanities. But as Maurice Lee shows in Overwhelmed, these concerns are not new—they also mattered in the nineteenth century, as the rapid expansion of print created new relationships between literature and information. Exploring four key areas—reading, searching, counting, and testing—in which nineteenth-century British and American literary practices engaged developing information technologies, Overwhelmed delves into a diverse range of writings, from canonical works by Coleridge, Emerson, Charlotte Brontë, Hawthorne, and Dickens to lesser-known texts such as popular adventure novels, standardized literature tests, antiquarian journals, and early statistical literary criticism. In doing so, Lee presents a new argument: rather than being at odds, as generations of critics have viewed them, literature and information in the nineteenth century were entangled in surprisingly collaborative ways. An unexpected, historically grounded look at how a previous information age offers new ways to think about the anxieties and opportunities of our own, Overwhelmed illuminates today’s debates about the digital humanities, the crisis in the humanities, and the future of literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first publication of Dracula in 1897, there have been suggestions that the book's protagonist is more closely associated with Jack the Ripper than a Transylvanian count. In The Dracula Secrets, historian Neil R. Storey undertakes an in-depth investigation of the sources used by Stoker during the writing of his seminal masterpiece. Painting an evocative portrait of Stoker, his influences, his friends and the London he frequented in the late nineteenth century, Storey explores how Stoker created Dracula out of the climate of fear that was created by the Whitechapel murders in 1888. Indeed he asks, did Stoker know Jack the Ripper personally and hide the clues to this terrible knowledge in his book? Having gained unprecedented access to the unique archive of one of Stoker's most respected friends and the dedicatee of Dracula, Storey sheds new light on both Stoker and Dracula, and reveals startling new links between Stoker's creation and the most infamous serial killer of all time.
