Book Glorified in America

Download or read book Glorified in America written by The Monastery of St John the Forerunner of Mesa Potamos and published by Holy Trinity Publications. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing both words and images this book animates the lives of a selection of holy men who labored on the North American continent in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries to give birth to the Orthodox Church in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Some of these have been formally glorified as saints and others may yet be. This book is much more than a simple historical account or retelling of their lives and particular service in North America: it is a spiritual manual, which strives to inspire and encourage its readers in their own struggle for the attainment of the holiness that adorns the lives of those recounted here.Chronologically the lives described herein span the years from 1854 to 2019 and focus on the time each man spent laboring in North America. None of them spent all their life on this continent but they left a legacy on these shores that endures to this day and will surely continue. The text is interspersed by an extensive collection of both black and white photographs and pen and ink drawings that, together with a final section of rich color photography, contribute greatly to bringing the reality of their life and times to us.

Book Denial and Repression of Anti Semitism

Download or read book Denial and Repression of Anti Semitism written by Jovan Byford and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović (1881–1956) is arguably one the most controversial figures in contemporary Serbian national culture. Having been vilified by the former Yugoslav Communist authorities as a fascist and an antisemite, this Orthodox Christian thinker has over the past two decades come to be regarded in Serbian society as the most important religious person since medieval times and an embodiment of the authentic Serbian national spirit. Velimirović was formally canonised by the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2003. In this book, Jovan Byford charts the posthumous transformation of Velimirović from 'traitor' to 'saint' and examines the dynamics of repression and denial that were used to divert public attention from the controversies surrounding the bishop's life, the most important of which is his antisemitism. Byford offers the first detailed examination of the way in which an Eastern Orthodox Church manages controversy surrounding the presence of antisemitism within its ranks and he considers the implications of the continuing reverence of Nikolaj Velimirović for the persistence of antisemitism in Serbian Orthodox culture and in Serbian society as a whole. This book is based on a detailed examination of the changing representation of Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović in the Serbian media and in commemorative discourse devoted to him. The book also makes extensive use of exclusive interviews with a number of Serbian public figures who have been actively involved in the bishop’s rehabilitation over the past two decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is written during his resting periods at Lake Ochrid (1921) in poetic-prose style, similar in spirituality to the Psalms of David. Can those who are themselves homeless really build the temple for the Teacher of all builders? (...) When you build the best for Him, you are setting an example for your soul, showing her what she should be building within herself (...) You build Him expensive edifices, in order to remind your soul that she was intended for, a royal palace, and not for hovels of clay (...) But what will become of your temples (...) If the domes of your temples are forever higher than your souls? (...) If the width of your temples is forever wider than the narrowness of your souls? (...) If your altars are forever shining more brightly than the shrines of your souls? (...) They will become the dead monuments of dead souls. Meet one of the greatest Orthodox bishops of the 20th century, an theological writer and a highly gifted orator, known as "The New Chrysostom." Saint Nikolai Velimirovich of Ohrid and Zhicha (1880 - 1956) was bishop in the Serbian Orthodox Church and the author of many Orthodox books.

Book The Harp of Glory

Download or read book The Harp of Glory written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Harp of Glory is a major hymn sounding the praises of the Theotokos, from the heart of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in its Golden Age. It is a text hardly known in the Orthodox or Western churches, even though it is truly a religious and literary treasure of world significance. It approaches closely to the character and genius of the Byzantine Akathist to the Mother of God (which it seems to know in part) but is so profoundly rooted in a different indigenous experience that it surely deserves the title of "An African Akathist." This beautiful lyrical poem will be of interest to all who follow the rise of biblical exegesis in the ancient church, and forms of the great devotion to the Mother of God that is characteristic of the eastern churches. It is also an exquisitely crafted love song to the Virgin (troubadour style), from a monk scholar-musician wandering the highlands of Ethiopia, long ago."--Publisher's website.
