Had Anselm come into the world a century later than he did, he would have found in the canons of St. Ours a cloistered brotherhood resembling in its essential features a community of monks; for precisely a hundred years after his birth that corporation relinquished the secular life to enter upon one ordered after a religious model; and the antiquary who now treads the cloister1 which their feet once wore, will find upon the capital of one of the exquisite little pillars of its colonnade this inscription: ? Anno ab Incamatione Domini m, c.xxx.iii. in hoc claustro regularis vita inccpta est. But though Anselm did not live long enough to witness the reform of that society of which he had, not improbably, been a member in his boyhood, he may have remotely contributed to the change both by early example and by exhortations addressed at a subsequent period to some of its members. These shall engage our attention presently; for it is first necessary to recall the fact that the secular clergy of the west, at least in its higher ranks, underwent a most signal change for the better during the latter half of the eleventh century. Yet, notwithstanding the inclemency of the season, there was a goodly assemblage of bishops at Canterbury on Sunday, the 4th of December, the day appointed for the consecration of the new Archbishop. St. Wulstan, the venerable Bishop of Worcester, who was now nearing the term of his eventful career, and Osbern, Bishop of Exeter, in the far west, were prevented by illness from taking their share in the ceremony; and the see of Lincoln was vacant; but every other diocese of the southern province was represented, so that, besides the Archbishop of York, there were nine wearers of the mitre that morning seated in Lanfranc's apsidal sanctuary, refulgent with all the splendour of their episcopal pomp - Maurice, Bishop of London; Vauquelin, Bishop of Winchester; Osmond, Bishop of Sarum; Robert, Bishop of Hereford; Robert, Bishop of Lichfield; John, Bishop of Bath; Ralph, Bishop of Chichester; Herbert, Bishop of Thetford, and the sweet and saintly Gundulf.
