Book Dream Child

Download or read book Dream Child written by Eric G. Wilson and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look into the life of Romantic essayist Charles Lamb and the legacy of his work A pioneer of urban Romanticism, essayist Charles Lamb (1775–1834) found inspiration in London’s markets, theaters, prostitutes, and bookshops. He prized the city’s literary scene, too, where he was a star wit. He counted among his admirers Mary Shelley, William Wordsworth, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His friends valued in his conversation what distinguished his writing style: a highly original blend of irony, whimsy, and melancholy. Eric G. Wilson captures Lamb’s strange charm in this meticulously researched and engagingly written biography. He demonstrates how Lamb’s humor helped him cope with a life‑defining tragedy: in a fit of madness, his sister Mary murdered their mother. Arranging to care for her himself, Lamb saved her from the gallows. Delightful when sane, Mary became Charles’s muse, and she collaborated with him on children’s books. In exploring Mary’s presence in Charles’s darkly comical essays, Wilson also shows how Lamb reverberates in today’s experimental literature.

Book Selected Prose

Download or read book Selected Prose written by Charles Lamb and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection brings together the best prose writings of the great early nineteenth-century essayist Charles Lamb, whose shrewd wit and convivial style have endeared him to generations of readers. These pieces include early discussions of Hogarth and Shakespeare; masterly essays written under the pen-name 'Elia' that range over such subjects as drunkenness, witches, dreams, marriage and the joy of roast pig; and letters to Lamb's circle of contemporaries, among them Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Wryly amused by the world, allusive, searching and endlessly inventive, these are the essential works of a master of English prose. In his introduction Adam Phillips discusses how Charles Lamb's tragic life and sainted reputation, caring for his mentally ill sister Mary, belied the quality of his work. This edition also includes a biographical index of Lamb's correspondents. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist best known for his humorous Essays of Elia from which the essay 'A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig' is taken. Lamb enjoyed a rich social life and became part of a group of young writers that included William Hazlitt, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron and Samuel Taylor Coleridge with whom he shared a lifelong friendship. Lamb never achieved the same literary success as his friends but his influence on the English essay form cannot be underestimated and his book, Specimens of the English Dramatic Poets is remembered for popularising the work of Shakespeare's contemporaries.

TO 1820, in one respect the most important year in Lamb's life, belong only five or six letters, all of which are comparatively trivial, the principal one being from Mary Lamb to Mrs. Vincent Novello, to sympathise with her on the loss of a little girl (the same little girl that prompted Leigh Hunt's essay Death of Little Children ). Crabb Robinson helps to fill in the gaps: ? January 3rd, 1820: ?A call on Miss Lamb. Later met Charles and Miss Lamb at Mr. Aders'. I was not in spirits. Aders exhibited his Campo Sacro to L. which he greatly enjoyed. And we had a rubber or two of whist. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also were of the party. We staid long, Aders had provided a profuse supper. L. was temperate but rather dull at the same time. However he seemed to enjoy himself, and that is the truest flattery. Charles Aders, a friend of Robinson, was a merchant of German extraction, with a house in Euston Square packed with pictures. In 1831 Lamb wrote some lines on his collection, and one of the prettiest of his later poems, Angel Help, was suggested by an engraving in Mrs. Aders' album. March 2nd: ?I called in the forenoon on Lamb to give him,10, a contribution towards sending Tom Holcroft to India. He will probably soon set out, and I consider this morning as well spent. Villiers H. is well settled in India and has offered to provide for his brother if he can be sent out. Miss L. told me of a Burney party this evening and I went to James Street . . . Walked home late with the Lambs. April 20th. Thursday: ?...

Book excerpt: After killing her mother with a carving knife, Mary Lamb spent the rest of her life in and out of madhouses; yet the crime and its aftermath opened up a new life. Download or read book The Life Letters and Writings of Charles Lamb written by Charles Lamb and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biographer E.V. Lucas deemed him the most lovable figure in English literature, but British poet, playwright, and essayist CHARLES LAMB (1774-1834) was unappreciated during his own lifetime. That Lamb is fondly remembered today is partly the result of the six-volume collection of his work edited and annotated by Irish author and critic PERCY HETHRINGTON FITZGERALD (1834-1925) and first published in 1875. Author of all manner of delightful works from playful verse for children to insightful essays on Elizabethan drama, Lamb is a hidden treasure of English literature, as his entertaining writings reveal. Complete with Fitzgerald's commentary on Lamb's life and legacy, this is a must-read set for lovers of 19th-century English classics. Volume II features Lamb's correspondence with Coleridge, Wordsworth, and many others.
