In 1824 Beckwourth left Missouri to head to the Rocky Mountains to work for William Ashley's Rocky Mountain Fur Company. He would never turn back. In his fascinating life, spent in the mountains and plains of the West, he lived as a trapper, hunter, guide, horse thief and Indian fighter. What is particularly fascinating about Beckwourth's book is his insight into the culture of the Native Americans, as for many years, this son of a slave and a slave owner, lived with the Crow Nation, trapping, hunting, marrying two of their women and raiding alongside them. It is even stated that he rose to the position of Chief of the Crow Nation. First published in 1856, The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth is a unique account of life in pioneer America in the early-nineteenth century. "This is a book of great importance to an understanding of the mountains, plains, and Great Basin West." California Historical Quarterly "It remains what it always has been since its first appearance in 1856--a rousing adventure story in which Jim Beckwourth plays the leading role." San Francisco Chronicle James Beckwourth was the only African American in the West to have his life story published. He was credited with the discovery of Beckwourth Pass which aided pioneers in reaching their destination in the West. He died in 1866.

Excerpt: ... despite all the opprobrium that is cast upon his name, for in him you have a man of chivalrous feeling, ready to divide his last morsel with his distressed fellow-- ay, and to yield the last drop of his blood to defend the life of his friend. CHAPTER XIII. War between the Crow Nation and other Indian Tribes. -- My first Victory as a Crow Indian.--A Melancholy and Sentimental Indian. --Indian Masonry.--Return to Camp.--Great Rejoicing among my innumerable Relatives.--The Little Wife. After feting for about ten days among my new neighbors, I joined a small war-party of about forty men, embodied for the ostensible purpose of capturing horses, but actually to kill their enemies. After advancing for three days, we fell in with a party of eleven of the Blood Indians, a band of the Black Foot tribe, immemorial enemies of the Crows. Our chief ordered a charge upon them. I advanced directly upon their line, and had struck down my man before the others came up. The others, after making a furious advance, that threatened annihilation to our few foes, curveted aside in Indian fashion, thus losing the effect of a first onset. I corrected this unwarlike custom. On this occasion, seeing me engaged hand to hand with the enemy's whole force, they immediately came to my assistance, and the opposing party were quickly dispatched. I despoiled my victim of his gun, lance, war-club, bow, and quiver of arrows. Now I was the greatest man in the party, for I had killed the first warrior. We then painted our faces black (their mode of announcing victory), and rode back to the village, bearing eleven scalps. We entered the village singing and shouting, the crowds blocking up our way so that it was with difficulty we could get along. My wife met me at some...

We have plenty who deserve to be promoted, who are as brave as the she-bear, and as swift as the antelope. Warriors, I now give up my position as first counsellor. I have done." Long Hair replied as follows: " Eed Bird, we feel that our hearts are sorry that you have seen fit to cease to be our first counsellor. You have served our people long and faithfully. Your counsel has been good: under your wise direction we have prospered. We would rather that you had still directed us; but you say it is your desire to have repose. Be it so. We know that your body is weak. We know that you have received numerous wounds from the weapons of our enemies. We know that you never turned your back upon the foe. Now we need a sixth counsellor, and must select one from the braves here present. Will you name him for us? " "No," said the old man; " I have never had any enemies among my braves, and I do not wish to make them now. I should not know which to choose, were I to attempt it. They are all brave." It was at length resolved that one of the medicine men should be blindfolded, and go among the most distinguished braves, and whoever he first placed his hand upon should take his seat as sixth counsellor. The distinguished braves then gathered promiscuously together; a close bandage was placed over the eyes of the medicine man, and away he went among the crowd. The five counsellors being among the braves, he placed his hand on one of them, and cried out, " Here is your sixth counsellor." " You are wrong," said Long Hair; " he is counsellor already." He then went through the crowd, and laid his hand upon another brave, crying out as before. Long Bow was therefore declared to be the choice of the people for sixth counsellor of the nation. When the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legendary mountain man James P. Beckwourth was an icon of his time, and an inspiration to generations of wilderness explorers and adventurers. A chapter-by-chapter recollection of the greatest adventures of Beckwourth's life, this autobiography recounts the experiences which served to build the legend around his name. Born a slave to a white father and a black, enslaved mother, Beckwourth never knew or experienced easy living. Apprenticed as a blacksmith by his father and master, an argument with the smithy led to his expulsion from the job. After the family moved to Missouri, the assertive young James persuaded his father to free him from slavery; after a series of court hearings between 1824 and 1826, he gained his freedom. Life as a free man of black heritage was difficult in the United States of the early 19th century. Finding nature to be better company than his fellow man much of the time, the young Beckwourth headed westward and joined the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, which he saw as an opportunity to partially escape civilization and become trained in the ways of hunting in the deep wilderness. Little did Beckwourth know that this decision would come to define his entire existence; a hunter of unusual skill and prowess, he soon distinguished himself from his colleagues. The next four decades saw him variously enlist with the U. S. Army, run a hotel and open a storefront - however his primary vocation was to always be hunting, trapping and selling furs. In the 19th century, Beckwourth's dictated autobiography was dismissed as mere exaggerated campfire stories. Yet subsequent generations of historians and the black civil rights movement, gave both Beckwourth and his great adventures a new lease of life in the 20th century. Now regarded as an important work of social history, it is with pride that the publisher presents this memoir complete with illustrations of its author.
