Book The Life and Adventures of Father Silas

Download or read book The Life and Adventures of Father Silas written by Anonymous and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naive of all things carnal, Silas is desperate to experience the ways the flesh, a fascination born from espying his nurse maid in congress with Father Ambrose at an early age; to fornicate before he devotes his life to the seminary and celibacy thereafter. How fortunate then to be in the company of the libidinous residents of the Celestine abbey. What follows is Silas' sexual awakening to all things lascivious, the Celestine monks guiding his hand towards every delightful dalliance and deed. With maids, naughty convent Sisters, and with his fellow brotherhood, he will lose himself to pleasure immeasurable and to a different form of enlightenment altogether. This ribald tale of naughty nuns and mischievous monks is the epitome of libertine literature, penned anonymously in 1741 and translated by George Carrington in 1897, The Life and Adventures of Father Silas is historical erotica at its deliciously finest.

Book Clandestine Erotic Fiction in English 1800 1930

Download or read book Clandestine Erotic Fiction in English 1800 1930 written by Peter Mendes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers bibliographical descriptions of all printings of erotic fiction in English issued clandestinely during the period 1800-1930. By 'clandestine' is meant books whose publishers and printers attempt to hide their identities, usually by offering title pages whose misleading places and dates of publication may shock and amuse, but which always aim to mystify. Using internal and external evidence, an attempt is made to establish who were the printers, booksellers and publishers, English and Continental, involved in this trade. The printing families or 'groups' into which a large percentage of the material falls are classified, accompanied by illustrations which identify the main printing characteristics ('house styles') of the groups. Bibliographical descriptions follow a checklist of clandestine catalogues; these provide valuable evidence for dating, pricing and 'sales pitch' and information on items of which no copies can now be traced. The work concludes with a series of appendices which provide significant external evidence, and three indexes: of themes, titles and names. Peter Mendes' original research builds on and significantly extends the essential pioneer work of the Victorian collector and bibliographer H.S. Ashbee ('Pisanus Fraxi').

Book Rebel at Large

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Van Buskirk
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2009-10-21
  • ISBN : 078645489X
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Rebel at Large written by Philip Van Buskirk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diary is one of the most unusual produced during the Civil War because it contains very little about military life. Early in the war Van Buskirk abandoned his regiment, working as a schoolmaster, farmhand, and casual laborer. He wrote of the suffering civilians endured at the hands of contending armies. But he also found time to chronicle his fascination with handsome young lads he encountered during his life as a deserter--unwittingly providing modern readers an illuminating glimpse of class differences and sexual mores. Naval, social and sexual historians, in particular, will find much valuable source material.

Book A Study of Erotic Literature in England

Download or read book A Study of Erotic Literature in England written by W. v. Murat and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work fills a gap as it attempts to offer a history of erotic literature published in the United Kingdom. The word Study in the title is perhaps a bit exaggerated as the material is largely taken from the now well known bibliographies by Pisanus Fraxi (Henry Spencer Ashbee) and quotations from the books themselves. The time line is WW II. Who was the author? He may have been Charles Reginald Dawes (1879-1964) who is supposed to have written (but not published) a text of this or a similar title. His profession or his activities are not known - he once called himself a writer but library catalogues credit him only with two publications: The Marquis de Sade (Paris 1927) and Retif de la Bretonne (London 1946, privately printed). He may have been a popular writer under pseudonyms, though. Dawes owned a good erotica collection which he willed to the British Museum Library; that would explain why the author of this Study - if he was Dawes - could quote freely from erotic texts which only few of his contemporaries would have had available. The main merits of this book are that the author was thoroughly familiar with English (and French) erotic literature and that he put his material in chronological order and in context. The editor added a number of references, illustrations and indices of personal names and titles to facilitate navigation.

Book The Yard of Wit

  • Author : Raymond Stephanson
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2013-10-09

Download or read book The Yard of Wit written by Raymond Stephanson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary composition is more than an intellectual affair. Poetry has long been said to spring from the heart, while aspiring writers are frequently encouraged to write "from the gut." Still another formulation likens the poetic imagination to the pregnant womb, in spite of the fact that most poets historically have been male. Offering a rather different set of arguments about the forces that shape creativity, Raymond Stephanson examines how male writers of the Enlightenment imagined the origins, nature, and structures of their own creative impulses as residing in their virility. For Stephanson, the links between male writing, the social contexts of masculinity, and the male body—particularly the genitalia—played a significant role in the self-fashioning of several generations of male authors. Positioning sexuality as a volatile mechanism in the development of creative energy, The Yard of Wit explains why male writers associated their authorial work—both the internal site of creativity and its status in public—with their genitalia and reproductive and erotic acts, and how these gestures functioned in the new marketplace of letters. Using the figure and writings of Alexander Pope as a touchstone, Stephanson offers an inspired reading of an important historical convergence, a double commodification of male creativity and of masculinity as the sexualized male body. In considering how literary discourses about male creativity are linked to larger cultural formations, this elegant, enlightening book offers new insight into sex and gender, maleness and masculinity, and the intricate relationship between the male body and mind.

Book excerpt: In his timely YA debut, a best-selling novelist revisits a summer of tumult and truth for a young narrator and his war-torn family. Bicentennial fireworks burn the sky. Bob Seger growls from a transistor radio. And down by the river, girls line up on lawn chairs in pursuit of the perfect tan. Yet for ten-year-old Eli Book, the summer of 1976 is the one that threatened to tear his family apart. There is his distant mother; his traumatized Vietnam vet dad; his wild sister; his former warprotester aunt; and his tough yet troubled best friend, Edie, the only person with whom he can be himself. As tempers flare and his father’s nightmares rage, Eli watches from the sidelines, but soon even he cannot escape the current of conflict. From Silas House comes a tender look at the complexities of childhood and the realities of war -- a quintessentially Southern novel filled with music, nostalgic detail, a deep respect for nature, and a powerful sense of place.
