Book Art Market and Connoisseurship

Download or read book Art Market and Connoisseurship written by Anna Tummers and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of whether seventeenth-century painters such as Rembrandt and Rubens were exclusively responsible for the paintings later sold under their names has caused many a heated debate. Despite the rise of scholarship on the history of the art market, much is still unknown about the ways in which paintings were produced, assessed, priced, and marketed during this period, which leads to several provocative questions: did contemporary connoisseurs expect masters such as Rembrandt to paint works entirely by their own hand? Who was credited with the ability to assess paintings as genuine? The contributors to this engaging collection—Eric Jan Sluijter, Hans Van Miegroet, and Neil De Marchi, among them—trace these issues through the booming art market of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, arriving at fascinating and occasionally unexpected conclusions.

Download or read book The Catholic Rubens written by Willibald Sauerlander and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of Rubens is rooted in an era darkened by the long shadow of devastating wars between Protestants and Catholics. In the wake of this profound schism, the Catholic Church decided to cease using force to propagate the faith. Like Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) sought to persuade his spectators to return to the true faith through the beauty of his art. While Rubens is praised for the “baroque passion” in his depictions of cruelty and sensuous abandon, nowhere did he kindle such emotional fire as in his religious subjects. Their color, warmth, and majesty—but also their turmoil and lamentation—were calculated to arouse devout and ethical emotions. This fresh consideration of the images of saints and martyrs Rubens created for the churches of Flanders and the Holy Roman Empire offers a masterly demonstration of Rubens’s achievements, liberating their message from the secular misunderstandings of the postreligious age and showing them in their intended light.

Book excerpt: From 5th September until 1st March 2020 the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, in conjunction with the City of Antwerp, VisitFlanders and the Flemish Community, presents 'From Titian to Rubens. Masterpieces from Antwerp and other Flemish Collections', an exhibition curated by Ben Van Beneden, director of Rubenshuis in Antwerp. The Doge's apartments will be transformed into veritable 'constkamers', rooms filled with exquisite art demonstrating the riches of Flemish collections. Featuring artists including Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Michiel Sweerts, the exhibition offers an array of works. Three icons of Venetian painting return to their hometown of Venice: Titian's Jacopo Pesaro presenting Saint Peter to Pope Alexander VI, the altarpiece of the former San Geminiano church, covered by the press worldwide as David Bowie's Tintoretto', and Titian's Portrait of a Lady and her Daughter (thought to be a depiction of Titian's mistress Milia and their daughter Emilia). A special section of the exhibition will be devoted to Flemish composer Adriaan Willaert who settled permanently in 'la Serenissima' to become Maestro di Cappella of the Basilica di San Marco in 1527. It was Willaert who founded the Venetian School of music that was to instruct, among others, Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi.

Book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting

Download or read book Nine Letters on Landscape Painting written by Carl Gustav Carus and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and science. Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first edition appears here in English for the first time.
