He decided to do something to help: to write a book about some of football's greatest legends and rebels. Long-term aid is still desperately needed to rebuild shattered lives in the Philippines. Norman travelled up and down the UK, and spent hours on the phone to capture the stories of the heroes, villains and true characters of football, from Stanley Matthews to Malcolm Macdonald. On a quest to discover the true heart and soul of the beautiful game, he met ex-players in pubs, cafes, offices and radio stations. Open the pages to discover a world of blood, sweat and broken bones, a far cry from the multi-million pound game that football has become today. All royalties after expenses from the sale of the book will go to the Philippines Typhoon Relief Fund.

Book excerpt: SHORTLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 'Read his book and weep' - The Times 'Incredibly moving and brilliantly understated... lays bare the culture of institutionalised neglect that all English football-goers in the 80s came to expect, which by the end of the decade would claim more than 150 lives' - Mirror On May 11 1985, fifty-six people died in a devastating fire at Bradford City's old Valley Parade ground. It was truly horrific, a startling story – and wholly avoidable – but it had only the briefest of inquiries, and it seemed its lessons were not learned. Twelve-year-old Martin Fletcher was at Valley Parade that day, celebrating Bradford's promotion to the second flight, with his dad, brother, uncle and grandfather. Martin was the only one of them to survive the fire – the biggest loss suffered by a single family in any British football disaster. In later years, Martin devoted himself to extensively investigating how the disaster was caused, its culture of institutional neglect and the government's general indifference towards football fans' safety at the time. This book tells the gripping, extraordinary in-depth story of a boy's unthinkable loss following a spring afternoon at a football match, of how fifty-six people could die at a game, and of the truths he unearthed as an adult. This is the story – thirty years on – of the disaster football has never properly acknowledged.

Book excerpt: Murphy's Mission is a rollercoaster ride through the life story of a journeyman, football manager, legend, and self-styled bard of the beautiful game. From a career with 15 different clubs from the 1970s to the early 2000s, Colin Murphy's biography is crammed full of dressing room high jinks, boardroom bust-ups, rescue missions, and scouting for non-league gems. Described by John Inverdale as 'one of my favourite people in sport ever', Murph was called The Saviour (Lincoln City), The Unsung Hero (Hull City), and The Mad Man (Southend United). As national coach of Vietnam he was hero-worshipped by a nation. Murph's catalogue of clubs from his 35 years in professional football management includes: Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Notts County, Lincoln City, Stockport County, Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia), Leicester City, Luton Town, Southend United, Shelbourne, Vietnam national team, Tottenham Hotspur (youth academy), Myanmar national team, Cork City and Hull City. An antidote to the excesses of the Premier League, real football fans will love this meticulously researched story of hard graft and survival against the odds. Extracts from Murph's madcap programme notes, and original interviews with former colleagues, including Roy Hodgson, David Pleat and Howard Wilkinson, bring the wit and wisdom of this much-loved character to life.
