"She deserves to die" are the chilling words whispered in the dark that compel a young dancer to discover who haunts her studio---and why. New to Chicago, 15-year-old Libby Nobleton stands outside the city's premier studio, L'Esprit. Having studied French in school, she fluently pronounces the word "le spree" and knows it means "the spirit." While innocently pursuing her passion, unearthly events torment Libby. Lights flicker, eerie shadows glide, and the open door of the abandoned elevator menacingly beckons. Libby struggles between her love for her new studio and the fear that someone or something might be out to get her. When a legendary statue resembling her ballet idol mysteriously appears, it opens a portal to the past exposing Libby to L'Esprit's timeless love story and turbulent past. At last, relying on faith and courage, Libby witnesses the shocking yet inspirational truth about L'Esprit's most tragic night, but who will believe her? The Legend of L'Esprit is a novel of paranormal, romance, and mystery and is appropriate for tweens, teens, and dance lovers of any age. The book includes an educational ballet glossary and each chapter begins with a dance term and definition that subtly relates to the adventure about to unfold. Book Telling the Story in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Telling the Story in the Middle Ages written by Kathryn A. Duys and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our modern understanding of medieval society and cultures comes through the stories people told and the way they told them. Storytelling was, for this period, not only entertainment; it was central to the law, religious ritual and teaching, as well as the primary mode of delivering news. The essays in this volume raise and discuss a number of questions concerning the strategies, contexts and narratalogical features of medieval storytelling. They look particularly at who tells the story; the audience; how a story is told and performed; and the manuscript and social context for such tales. Laurie Postlewate is Senior Lecturer, Department of French, Barnard College; Kathryn Duys is Associate Professor, Department of English and Foreign Languages, University of St Francis; Elizabeth Emery is Professor of French, Montclair State University.

Book Art as Music Music as Poetry Poetry as Art from Whistler to Stravinsky and Beyond

Download or read book Art as Music Music as Poetry Poetry as Art from Whistler to Stravinsky and Beyond written by Peter Dayan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1877, Ruskin accused Whistler of ’flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face’. Was he right? After all, Whistler always denied that the true function of art was to represent anything. If a painting does not represent, what is it, other than mere paint, flung in the public’s face? Whistler’s answer was simple: painting is music - or it is poetry. Georges Braque, half a century later, echoed Whistler’s answer. So did Braque’s friends Apollinaire and Ponge. They presented their poetry as music too - and as painting. But meanwhile, composers such as Satie and Stravinsky were presenting their own art - music - as if it transposed the values of painting or of poetry. The fundamental principle of this intermedial aesthetic, which bound together an extraordinary fraternity of artists in all media in Paris, from 1885 to 1945, was this: we must always think about the value of a work of art, not within the logic of its own medium, but as if it transposed the value of art in another medium. Peter Dayan traces the history of this principle: how it created our very notion of ’great art’, why it declined as a vision from the 1960s and how, in the 21st century, it is fighting back.
