Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founding, structure, and operations of the League of Arab States since its organization in 1945 are analyzed. In the first half of the book the author discusses the League's decision-making processes, considers regional dynamics, the polarization of power between Egypt and Iraq, and the impact of such major issues as Palestine on the League. He considers the League’s techniques of cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized agencies, neutralism and nonalignment, and the boycott of Israel. In the latter half of the study, three major operational questions typical of regional organizations are examined: functional integration in cultural, social, economic, and scientific affairs; problems of regional security and peaceful settlement of disputes; and interaction between the Arab League and the United Nations. Book The Role of League of Arab States in Meditating Disputes and Resolving Conflicts Among Arab States

Download or read book The Role of League of Arab States in Meditating Disputes and Resolving Conflicts Among Arab States written by Soumia Bouhamidi and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the end of the 19th century Arabs were becoming increasingly aware of their position as a weak, fragmented and occupied nation. While most Arab countries were considered part of the Ottoman Empire, almost all of them were at the time subject to European colonial rule or political influence and economic dominance. During the World Wide I, Arabs had a chance to launch a revolt against Turkey in support of the Allies war effort in exchange for a promise from Britain to help them gain independence. The Arab League, officially called the League of Arab States, is a regional organization of Arab states in Southwest Asia and North and Northeast Africa. It was formed in Cairo on March 22, 1945 with six members: Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Later, during the 1960s and 70s, many other Arab states joined the organization.

Book Arab Approaches to Conflict Resolution

Download or read book Arab Approaches to Conflict Resolution written by Nahla Yassine-Hamdan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Arab approaches to mediation, negotiation and settlement of political disputes. This book proposes that two clusters of independent variables are potentially responsible for the distinctive nature of Arab conflict resolution. Firstly, those linked with Arab political regimes and imperatives, and secondly those linked with Arab and /or Islamic culture. The text also focuses on the Arab League and its history of involvement in crisis and conflict situations, along with the roles of individual leaders, emissaries and extra-regional actors such as IGOs (Inter-Governmental Organisations) in undertaking mediation initiatives. IGO and Arab League activity has taken on new importance since the various intervention attempts in connection with the 'Arab Spring' since 2011. During the negotiation process, most Arab regimes tend to view conflicts within a broad historical context and Islamic culture prioritises the cohesion of the community and internal stability of the state over individual autonomy. This has created an authoritarian style of leadership, and in practice, leaders in the Middle East have had near absolute authority in the decision-making process—a fact which will have a lot of weight in conflict management and whether peace will endure for a long period of time. This book is unique in studying these clusters through comparative systematic case study analysis of events prior to and subsequent to the 'Arab Spring', augmented by a quantitative analysis of sample data on Arab disputes, compiled from a larger and newly augmented study comprising the years 1945-2000. Complementary data from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program’s (UCDP) data base of armed conflicts since 1975 is also utilized. This book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, Middle Eastern politics and IR in general.

Book Boundaries of Discourse in the International Court of Justice

Download or read book Boundaries of Discourse in the International Court of Justice written by Michelle Burgis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Third World experiences of colonialism and statehood be expressed within the confines of the International Court of Justice? How has the discourse of international law developed to reflect postcolonial realities of ‘universal’ statehood? In a close and critical reading of four territorial disputes spanning the Arab World, Burgis explores the extent to which international law can be used to speak for and speak to non-European experiences of authority over territory. The book draws on recent, critical international legal scholarship to question the ability of contemporary, international adjudication to address Third World grievances from the past. A comparative analysis of the cases suggests that international law remains a discourse only capable of capturing a limited range of non-European experiences during and after colonialism.

Download or read book Beyond Syria s Borders written by Emma Lundgren Jörum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The on-going crisis in Syria has not only affected those caught within the country's borders, but with the deluge of refugees fleeing the violence, it has also had an impact on the surrounding countries. Lebanon, together with the province of Hatay in Turkey (containing Antakya) and the Golan Heights were all originally part of French Mandate Syria, but are now all outside the boundaries of the modern Syrian state. The policies and reactions of Syria both to the loss of these territories and to the states that have either emerged from, absorbed or annexed them (Lebanon, Turkey and Israel) are the focus of Emma Lundgren Jorum's book. Beyond Syria's Borders highlights the differences between actual policy on the one hand and rhetoric and discourse on the other when it comes to each of these three cases. It does so in order to understand the nature of not only territorial dispute in the region, but also the processes of state-building and nationalism more generally.Covering the formation of the Syrian Arab Republic from the fall of the Ottoman Empire through to the twenty-y rst century, Lundgren Jorum examines the ways in which Syrian views of these lost territories have changed over time. Through the examination of Syria's foreign policies towards these lost territories, Lundgren Jorum sets out and analyses Syrian-Turkish, Syrian-Lebanese and Syrian-Israeli relations. In doing so, she advances particular conceptions of nationalism to explain why Syria views certain lost territories as more valuable than others and why some losses have been pushed to one side and others remain at the forefront in Syria's international relations and diplomacy efforts, despite, and sometimes because of, the current con ict. Lundgren Jorum's examination of Syria's responses to the loss of territory is thus vital for any reader attempting to understand the workings of Syrian foreign policy, impacting everything from Syria's role in the Middle East to the wider Arab-Israeli con ict. This makes it vital for those researching both the history of border conflicts in the region as well as the current crisis.

Book Inter Arab Management of Regional Conflicts

Download or read book Inter Arab Management of Regional Conflicts written by Ahmed Al-Atrash and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study delineates and follows a broad analytical framework of instruments used in inter-Arab conflict management within which inter-Arab adversaries operate. The League of Arab States and the Algerian-Moroccan conflict are the primary concern of the project. In conformity with the significance of understanding of a conflict in the process of its management, the study provides extensive overview of the conflict under investigation with special emphasis on its structure and main characteristics. Subsequently, the study analyses the different responses to the conflict. The objective is to reveal the gap between declared commitment and actual behaviour of the Arab League in prticular. In order to propose an alternative approach, the thesis systematically discloses the fundamental obstacles that preclude the development of inter-Arab conflict management. Accordingly, it suggests a modified contingency model while taking into account its potential effectiveness, compatibility and applicability on a broader organisational level. Hence, the study is an attempt at making a small contribution in building the theory of international mediation.

Book Israel the Middle East and the Great Powers

Download or read book Israel the Middle East and the Great Powers written by Israel Stockman-Shomron and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel, The Middle East and the Great Powers presents the Israel-Arab conflict to the general public in a uniquely comprehensive and interdisciplinary format. Its form and content reflect the most serious efforts of Israel's intellectual community to analyze the conflict situation in which they live, objectively and honestly. The book argues that recent events have reduced the U.S. role, and changed the policy parameters in the region. A broad cross-section of Israel's foremost orientalists, historians, juridicists and political scientists have contributed a selection of articles and lexicons which embody the essential aspects of the conflict in its broadest sense. Each key element is analyzed within a number of categories: the ideological-theological plane (Judaism, Zionism, the Holocaust, Jerusalem and the three monotheistic religions); the Palestinian sphere (PLO ideology, Jordon and the Judea & Samaria Region, the PLO and the war in lebanon); the superpowers and the wider region (Iran-Iraq, the Islamic resurgence, oil, the Soviet Union and the Middle East, the United States and Israel), etc. Detailed lexicons offer concise factual breakdowns of both the Middle East (inter-Arab aspects, key Arab countries, conventional and nuclear Arab armaments) and the Arab-Israel context (chronology of the conflict, key events and personalities in Zionism, UN involvement, international legal aspects).
