Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of vocation in an early modern setting calls to mind the priesthood or religious life in a monastery or cloister; to be “called” by God meant to leave the concerns of the world behind. Beginning in the mid-seventeenth century, French Catholic clergy began to promote the innovative idea that everyone, even an ordinary layperson, was called to a vocation or “state of life” and that discerning this call correctly had implications for one’s happiness and salvation, and for the social good. In Callings and Consequences Christopher Lane analyzes the origins, growth, and influence of a culture of vocation that became a central component of the Catholic Reformation and its legacy in France. The reformers’ new vision of the choice of a state of life was marked by four characteristics: urgency (the realization that one’s soul was at stake), inclusiveness (the belief that everyone, including lay people, was called by God), method (the use of proven discernment practices), and liberty (the belief that this choice must be free from coercion, especially by parents). No mere passing phenomena, these vocational reforms engendered enduring beliefs and practices within the repertoire of global Catholic modernity, even to the present day. An illuminating and sometimes surprising history of pastoral reform, Callings and Consequences helps us to understand the history of Catholic vocational culture and its role in the modernizing process, within Christianity and beyond.

Book The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent and Other Essays

Download or read book The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent and Other Essays written by John Erskine and published by ISCI. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book contains the following works of John Erskine, Ph.D: The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent, The Call to Service, The Mind of Shakespeare and Magic and Wonder in Literature. The title essay, originally read before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Amherst College, is reprinted with the editor's courteous permission from the Hibbert Journal. The last essay also was read before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Amherst College, and before the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni of New York City. In different ways the four essays set forth one theme — the moral use to which intelligence might be put, in rendering our admirations and our loyalties at once more sensible and more noble.

Book The Spirit of Vatican II

Download or read book The Spirit of Vatican II written by Colleen McDannell and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 a group of Catholic leaders traveled to Rome, charged by Pope John XXIII with the task of making the gospel of Christ relevant in a modern world. The Second Vatican Council transformed the lives of Catholics through sweeping reforms -- yet its effect on the daily lives of practicing Catholics has never been fully understood. In this illuminating study, religious historian Colleen McDannell presents new insight into Vatican II by shifting the framework of its analysis: from men to women, from urban to suburban, from theory to practice. Using the story of her Catholic mother's life as a narrative thread, McDannell presents in The Spirit of Vatican II a refreshingly positive portrayal of the state of modern Catholicism -- and a testament to the lasting effects of its liberalization.
