Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student teaching is the key phase in the preparation of the professional instructional personnel of the nation's schools. Yet, the burgeoning literature of education law lacks a comprehensive and current source specific to student teaching. This volume fills that gap. The first part of this volume consists of a legal primer designed to provide the basic building blocks that serve as the foundation for the aforementioned common core. The second and central part includes an illustrative synthesis of the various state laws specific to student teaching and canvasses the available court decisions specifically concerning student teachers and student teaching. The final part consists of a variety of useful materials in the form of appendices, including charts of relevant statutes and case law; selected case scenarios for the purpose of review and discussion; a glossary of acronyms, abbreviations, and legal terms; and a sampler list of relevant resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mathematical study was initially written as a set of notes in complex analysis over the spring and summer of 2013. Its purpose is to clarify the techniques and results of complex analysis by using a dialogue between master and student. Its inspiration is the belief that this form of open conversation can show the reader both the tension and structure of the material. For this reason, dialogue can prove to be a very powerful and eloquent form of mathematical instruction. The book begins with an introduction to sequences and topology before tackling the topics of complex differentiability, Taylor series, contour integration, and the calculus of residues. After all this, complex functions are studied as conformal mappings, leading naturally to the Riemann mapping theorem. Before going on to the proof of this theorem, the focus shifts to the study of heat and Fourier analysis. The techniques of complex analysis are used to aid in studying the Fourier series and transform. The study then returns to conformal mappings in the context of solving Laplace's equation on various regions. After this, the topic becomes the study of special functions, culminating in Riemann's proof of the prime number theorem, and then shifting focus once again to the doubly-periodic elliptic functions. The final chapter is not standard in an introductory complex analysis book, and concerns the study of Theta functions and modular forms. There is a separate appendix of color plots to accompany this book. This work was mostly modeled after Elias Stein's lecture series at Princeton.

Book Standards for Teachers

Download or read book Standards for Teachers written by Linda Darling-Hammond and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher educators and teachers must be leaders in developing learner-centered standards for preparing teachers. Standards can help teachers build their own knowledge and understanding of what helps students learn. As schools undergo restructuring, teachers will be responsible for students, not just subject-matter information; for understanding how learning is occurring; and for having tools to assess how students learn and think as well as what they know. Teachers will also be responsible for curriculum development, assessment, decision making about special needs of students, and reaching out to parents from different communities. Licensing requirements and teacher evaluation requirements generally do not focus on this conception of teaching. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is setting standards that reflect the real complexities and real judgments that teachers must deal with. Teachers' development of materials to be submitted for Board certification and teachers' reflection upon their teaching are powerful professional development activities. The goal should be to create, use, reflect upon, operationalize, and enliven standards in a way that produces learning. This kind of work among teachers can lead to the development of a profession that can take ownership and leadership for creating and using an expanding base of knowledge to serve all children well. Book Law and American Education

Download or read book Law and American Education written by Robert Palestini and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition expands coverage on such topics as the law and students with disabilities, confidentiality, sexual harassment, student searches and tuition vouchers. It also includes some new topics such as bullying, copyright law, and the law and the internet. Both public and nonpublic school educators are aware that courts, over the last several decades, have played an increasingly significant role in defining school policy. Decisions in such areas as school desegregation, prayer, public school financing, student rights, collective bargaining, students with disabilities, sexual harassment and other personnel issues attest to the extent and importance of judicial influence. It is important, therefore, that teachers and administrators have a least a rudimentary knowledge and understanding of school law and how it affect their day-to-day classroom activities. There is a sizable body of school law with which educators should be familiar if they wish to conduct themselves in a legally acceptable manner. Those educators who “fly by the seat of their pants” may be in difficulty if sufficient thought is not given to the legal implications of their decisions and conduct. This text provides introductory material for those educators interested in K-12 educational issues, and who have little or no background or knowledge in school law. This book takes a case brief approach to the study of school law. Case briefs are the means by which students of the law summarize cases to facilitate learning and analysis. This book’s purpose is to provide those who are involved and interested in education with a rudimentary knowledge base for making educationally sound decisions within the legal framework of our nation. Having such knowledge may preclude, or at least minimize, an educator’s exposure to liability. On the other hand, this book is not intended to scare educators into inaction. Many of the most effective learning activities carry with them a certain degree of risk. Field trips and laboratory experiments come immediately to mind. The knowledge obtained from this book is not intended to end the taking of field trips and the conducting of laboratory experiments. It is intended to be a guide to conducting these valuable activities in a responsible manner that will minimize the educator’s exposure to liability.

Book Corporal Punishment in U S Public Schools

Download or read book Corporal Punishment in U S Public Schools written by Elizabeth T. Gershoff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief reviews the past, present, and future use of school corporal punishment in the United States, a practice that remains legal in 19 states as it is constitutionally permitted according to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a result of school corporal punishment, nearly 200,000 children are paddled in schools each year. Most Americans are unaware of this fact or the physical injuries sustained by countless school children who are hit with objects by school personnel in the name of discipline. Therefore, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools begins by summarizing the legal basis for school corporal punishment and trends in Americans’ attitudes about it. It then presents trends in the use of school corporal punishment in the United States over time to establish its past and current prevalence. It then discusses what is known about the effects of school corporal punishment on children, though with so little research on this topic, much of the relevant literature is focused on parents’ use of corporal punishment with their children. It also provides results from a policy analysis that examines the effect of state-level school corporal punishment bans on trends in juvenile crime. It concludes by discussing potential legal, policy, and advocacy avenues for abolition of school corporal punishment at the state and federal levels as well as summarizing how school corporal punishment is being used and what its potential implications are for thousands of individual students and for the society at large. As school corporal punishment becomes more and more regulated at the state level, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools serves an essential guide for policymakers and advocates across the country as well as for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students.
