This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 81: July 24, 1919 Long and earnestly the great leader gazes upon the scene, while the members of the little company await breathlessly the verdict. Then, relaxing his hold upon the shoulders of his supporters. He utters the memorable words: This is the Place! Drive on. This is the Place! The place for what? What objective had led this little company of toil-worn men and women to sacrifice the gentler customs and comforts of civilization, to wend their way out into the heart of the Great American Desert? Ah! It was the witness in their souls that God was about to perform a mar velons work and a wonder. His kingdom was about to come to earth, and it was here, here in the midst of desolations, that the nucleus of His work was to be laid! This had been the warp and the woof of their dreams by night, and the vision that glowed before their spiritual eyes by day, throughout all the long, weary march, characterized by so much physical pain and suffering. This the vision that prompted them to'new effort when physical strength hung in the balance! The overwhelming conviction that God had not forgotten His people, nor His prophets; the inspira tion of which had heartened them time and time again, while on the pilgrimage, to take up the strains of: Come, come, ye saints. No toil nor labor fear - all is well! All is well! For this, like those of old, they took gladly the Spoiling of their goods, dispossession, exile far from the madding crowd, that they might have the privi lege of worshiping God as their souls desired, and that they might secure for themselves a place of refuge in which to begin the great latter-day work of preparation for the coming of the Great King. And so, down into the valley bottom they wended their way. And there, before the sun had yet declined beyond the western hills, they had already begun the establishment of a civilization in the heart of those vast solitudes. The voice of God had said, through the inspiration of the prophets of old: It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the tops of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations Shall flow unto it. A house must be builded, then, to the Lord, so that the Christ should not again have it to say that the foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to lay His head. On April 6th, 1853, just five years from the time of their entrance into the valley, and while yet the people labored in dire poverty, the foundation stones of the temple of God were laid. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: September 27, 1906 The volume which, by way 'of eminence, has the general name of The Bible is well known to be a collection of books of various authors, written at dis tant intervals and on different Occasions; but all supposed to teach, either directly or figuratively, the practice of piety, and the means of man's accept ance with his Creator. There is a general division of these writings into two parts, namely, those which relate to the old covenant, and those which relate to the new, commonly called the. Old and the New Testament. It may be best to begin the survey of these writings with the New Testament. Before any book, professing to relate facts, can be entitled to credit, the authenticity and veracity must be established. N ow there is no book in the world Of equal age, whose authenticity is established upon firmer ground than the New Testament 3 so that if a sceptic, unable to withstand the arguments which it affords in favor Of Christianity, should be disposed to reject it, he must be driven to the absurdity Of rejecting all the historians of the same age 3 a piece of folly which would disgrace a school-boy. The apostles and evangelists were competent witnesses, and could not be deceived in the facts which they recorded. They do not pretend to give us an account Of the transactions done in remote countries, or which had hap pened in ages before their time, but Of those which they had themselves witnessed with their eyes and with their ears. They had lived with Christ during His ministry 3 they had heard His discourses; they had seen His wonderful works, and consequently received them on the testimony of their own senses. If Plato has been deemed a competent witness, and in every respect qualified to compose the biographical account Of his master Socrates, and of his discourses in prison, because he was present on these occasions, surely the evangelical writers are competent witnesses of the facts which they relate. For they were neither enthusiasts nor fanatics. And as they could not be deceived themselves, so they neither would nor did deceive others. They were men Of probity and piety, who abominated a lie. They could Ob tain neither pleasure, honor, nor profit in this world, by obtruding falsehoods on mankind; but on the contrary, they were exposed to the loss of all these, and even Of life itself, for being preachers of the doctrine of the Cross, and' bearing witness to the truth of Christianity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 91: December 5, 1929 He said: GO ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. He did not hesitate to tell people what was necessary. There was not any unkind ness in His voice or in His instructions. His threat of damnation was not given with anger or unkindness. His desire was that all men might be called into the pathway that would lead them to eternal life and celestial glory. His instructions to His disciples indicated that all who really desired to know the will of God should have the Opportunity to learn what it was; and that then the ordinances Of the Gospel that were necessary for the salva tion Of the human family should be administered, and men should be prepared for a place in the celestial kingdom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 91: November 14, 1929 A thoughtful study of these words reveals these great truths: First, that it is possible that knowledge not previously possessed by man may come from God our Father to His children who are here upon earth. It is probably true that Peter himself did not under stand the direct source from which the impulse that prompted his answer had come, but this scripture makes it plain that it came from God our Father, who spoke to him through the influence, or whisperings of the Holy Ghost. Another important truth which this scripture reveals is that the means of communication between 01117 Father who is in heaven and His children who are here upon earth, is the Holy Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost, communicated to us through the precious gift of revelation. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to be built upon this principle of revelation. Another very important thing which is definitely implied by these words spoken by the Redeemer of the world is that the keys which were bestowed upon Peter, when in the possession of any other man, as they were in the possession of Peter, confer upon him the authority to bind upon earth and it shall be bound in heaven to loose upon earth and it shall be loosed in heaven. Questions which are of vital importance, and in which this principle or doctrine of revelation is directly involved, have come to the Church from the time of its organization until the present. They are constantly being introduced and discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 89 written by James E. Talmage and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: September 29, 1927 Peter positively avows that Christ went and preached unto the spirits in prison. Read this in connection with the context, 1 Peter 3: 18-20. The same Apostle refers further to Jesus as He who Shall judge the quick and the dead; and adds: For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the Spirit. See 1 Peter 4: 6. Contrary to the sectarian dogmas, based solely on the theories Of men, by which the minds Of mankind were darkened during the long night Of the great apostasy, opportunity for repentance and for consequent progression is provided for beyond the grave. The essential conditions for salvation or admission into the king. Dom of God are the same in the realm of the disembodied as here among mortals. Without faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Sincere repentance of sin, the reception of baptism by imm'ersion under the authority Of the Holy Priesthood, and the bestowal of the Holy Ghost, or the right to the ministry of the Holy Ghost, by the laying on Of hands, no soul can be saved in the kingdom of God. Disembodied Spirits, when brought to the realization Of the sins they have committed in the flesh, may comprehend the dire effects of their evil lives, and may develop faith, and actually repent. For these the material ordinances Of baptism by im mersion in water, and the laying on of hands for the bestowal of the Holy Ghost can be administered through the proxy of their descendants who accept the Gospel for themselves here on earth. The glorious work being carried on in the Temples Of the Lord in the current age is One Of the present and saving results of our Lord's ministry in paradise, during the interval between His death on the cross and His emergence from the sepulchre. The spirits of those who have lived and died as mortals retain their intelligence, and also their free agency, except as they have bound themselves to the service of Satan; and even from this dire condition there is possibility and hope of release if they will comply with the conditions Of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as it is now being preached amongst the innumerable hosts Of the departed, and as the requisite ordinances requiring administra tion 'here on earth are solemnized in the House Of the Lord.
