Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: April 9, 1925 A century ago a scholarly man by the name of Thomas Hart well Horne wrote a voluminous set of books which he titled An Introduction to a Critical Study of the Holy Scriptures. In his careful analysis of the evidences of Christianity he selected one which was of outstanding importance, and of preeminent weight as a proof of the divinity of the Christian Church. That evidence was the exercise of the gift of prophecy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: June 25, 1925 These this prominent writer gives as the fundamentals of Christianity. These the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ are preaching. Their aims are lofty, their purposes are sublime, and the world, instead of speaking against them should encourage them and uphold them. Particularly is this true of the State of Utah. Every citizen of this State owes an obligation to the two thousand missionaries who are out representing this State in honour. Why should anyone condemn the missionaries who are out preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ without price, paying their own expenses for teaching to the world the Fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and bearing witness, in kindness and love, that our Father has appeared to man, that His Son Jesus Christ has been raised from the tomb and now lives, bearing wit ness to the world of the immortality of the soul? Who Should vilify people for standing on that sublime ground They testify further that the Church of Christ is organised in its perfection, and if the world will accept that Church and apply its principles economically, educationally and socially, the brotherhood of man will be established and the Millennium for which all honest souls are longing will be hastened. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: April 30, 1925 I think you all know what the camera is, the kodak. To-day it is in very common use. You know it consists essentially Of a lens and a light-tight box, so arranged that a sensitive plate can be put into position just at the proper distance behind the lens. To me the miracle of the photographic plate becomes greater and greater with the years. Think of it-that plate has been in the dark ever Since it was made. It is put into position in the camera, the shutter of the lens is Opened perhaps for the one-hundredth of a second, and the light passes through the lens and falls upon the plate. For one-hundredth of a second that plate looks out upon the world, and oh, how well it remembers what it saw! Perhaps it is a landscape that it gazes upon, or the face of a loved one sitting in a chair; and it forgets nothing. After exposure the plate is taken into the dark room, removed from the light tight case, and developed by means of chemical liquids. When it is dry we hold it up to the light and see the picture; and from the negative we can print as many positive copies as we like. Now, how is that miracle brought about? By strict Obedience to the laws of light, and to all the mechanical laws and rules involved in the operation Of the camera, and to all the chemical laws involved in the development of the plate; and only through such Obedience can we be successful. If we break even the least of these laws we fail to get the picture; and in place of a good negative we have only a spoiled plate. SO we may consider other illustrations, and we see that through Obedience are we able to gain blessings. Men of science in this country to-day are at work in your laboratories striving to discover other laws of Nature not yet known; and why do they wish to make such discoveries? So that we may know how to obey these laws; because they know that by obedience to these higher laws we will get greater and higher blessings. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: April 2, 1925 Some critics of the Christian doctrine, as applied in solution of the problems of humanity, say that it is superficial; that it fails to take into consideration the natural instincts and tendencies of the race, and that it is unscientific and unsound. They say that men are born of contention, rivalry and warfare, and that it is instinctive in man to kill his brother to accomplish his own survival. They say it, but have they proved it? Are we not justified, from the observations of history and from our own observations, limited as they are in time and extent, in believing that it is possible for men to live together in peace, and that when they so live they are happy? Of course, if we are not logically justified in reaching this conclusion it would seem futile to search for any plan to govern human relationship, since those relations must result from native, inherent tendencies, in hatred, discord and killing. Now I am not pessimistic enough to point out such a dismal prospect for the race. We are taught that man is that he might have joy, and while we are not unmindful of the effect of blood strain and inherent tendencies, we are optimistic and hopeful enough to believe that man may eventually master himself, his appetites, his passions and his weaknesses. For this great achievement, and it will be his greatest achievement, he must have help. We are convinced that that help lies in the Gospel plan and is freely available to every man who will receive it. May we not answer: It is because they do not, and apparently can not understand what is called the immaculate conception? They do not believe in Christ's miracles nor in His resurrection from the dead, for the same reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: March 26, 1925 But the evil effect of insincerity upon society at large is even greater and more wicked than upon the individual, great as this latter is. It is impossible in modern life for a person to investi gate for himself every fact or statement that is presented to him. Some he must accept upon the testimony of others. The physician to whom life is entrusted, the solicitor whose counsel is followed in civil affairs, the banker whose business it is to safeguard others' funds - all are to a great extent confided in upon the broad under standing of honesty among men. And in a limited measure, each member of the human family is charged with a responsibility to his fellows, equal to that held by the physician, the solicitor or the banker. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 26, 1925 Throughout the world to-day. As we have already been informed by a number of the speakers, there is commotion and a spirit of unrest; and the people, many of them, feel that it is something to their credit to hold radical views, to consider themselves to be progressive, and make attack upon things that have stood and have endured throughout the ages. This tendency is not alone found in the political world. It is found in the world of educa tion, of religion, of government, of business and everywhere. Men are departing from the well-worn paths, no matter how good they are, and feel that conservatism is a reproach; that it is the duty of man to do away with that which is Old. Or which has been established, and find something that is new. We stand prac tically alone in the world, yes, absolutely alone in the world, representing the truth of the living God, declaring to all men the principles of eternal truth which do not change. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not new in the sense in which the world looks upon things as being new, for ithas endured through the ages, not merely since the days of the advent of the Son of God, but from the beginning of the world, for the plan of salvation was prepared for the benefit of man and was declared unto him in the beginning. These principles do not change, they cannot change, they must endure immutably through all time. The Christian world may be divided into two camps, one bitterly opposing the other; one calling itself the progressive or modernist division, the other calling itself the fundamentalist division. They may think they are founded upon the truth of the Gospel as it has been established. But we stand for the revelations of God as they have been revealed in this dispensation, known. As the dispensation of the fulness of times, unchangeable, immutable, enduring forever, because they are eternal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 I have chosen this particular passage from many others which bear upon the same subject and have submitted these comments to emphasise one of the greatest impelling powers behind the great missionary movement of the Church of Christ, viz. To announce to all the world that Jesus Christ has again delegated the same authority to men, which He gave to His former apostles, and has once more established His Church upon earth. As the Saviour authoritatively commissioned His apostles of old, so has He authoritatively commissioned men to-(lay. Missionaries are abroad declaring this wonderful message. Equal to this as an impelling force is the Church membership's realisation of the transforming power of the Gospel. Every true member knows that obedience to the Gospel brings to individuals new motives, new ideals, new assurance that it will produce ideal conditions in society and bring to each nation that new life and love of service which will eventually establish the long-hoped-for peace and good w ill.
