Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: October 9, 1913 Organ of Christ, God raised up voices in the wilderness of spiritual darkness and decay to establish His balance of power. What happened to many of His instruments is too well known to need rehearsal here. We could refer to the thousands of martyrs who were actually hung alive upon meat hooks; others that were burned at the stake because of their faithfulness to the testimony which they had of the truth, and of the divinity of their missions. We can't eulogize them all, but we can at least call to mind two or three of their representatives, monumental characters among the illustrious men of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: February 6, 1913 A new work entitled, The Restoration of the Gospel, by Prof. Osborne J. P. Widtsoe, a.m., Principal of the Latter-day Saints' High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, has but recently issued from the Deseret News press. It was passed upon by a committee under appointment from the First Presidency, and therefore comes to the public strongly recommended. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is at most a story of the Restoration. It presumes at the outset that some thing has been restored. It relates how this something was restored. Every missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has met these two questions when he has preached abroad the Gospel of the restorati011: -what was restored? How was it restored? These two questions the follow ing chapters attempt to answer in part. It is but fair and just to say that he has handled the subject admirably. Many strong and convincing facts are skilfully woven together in chronological order, and prove beyond successful contradiction the need of a Restoration. While this is the particular and Special theme of the work, much valuable information is Contained in the chapters entitled, Sacred Writings of Old, A Sacred Book of To-day, The Gospel Brotherhood, A New and Everlasting Covenant, The Vision of Glories, In the Mouths of Witnesses, The Test of Section Sixty-seven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 7, 1913 Another coterie of sectarian critics, like the famous traveler from Altruria, who found his guileless soul constantly in pain, because the Golden Rule appeals not to worldly cupidity, publish a wail of horror at the record of the juvenile court in a city overwhelmingly Because of this dreadful list, including truancy, malicious mischief, use of tobacco, violating city ordinances, trespassing on railroad cars, and several other offences common to youth, even in Christian communities, their trenchant editor runs amuck through half a column, reviling a senator, accusing a drug company of boose - vending, hinting at vague rumors of unprintable doings, which no one had attempted to print, and concludes thus The reason is that in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints there is no saving power. The 'mormon' Church has not and cannot change. [shades of the grammarians The only hope for Utah is in the evan gelical churches, and these churches must declare the whole counsel of God, or sadly miss their chance. Well, good, kind, logical gentlemen, declare the whole counsel of God and do it now - it should take the whole time of all of you but do soft-pedal these railing accusations based on the folly of irresponsible children, and omit this hoodlum gossip about unprint table doings which are no monopoly of Mormons, else some of us will conclude that you know little enough of God and His counsels. If the evangelical churches are going to purge Utah of the vicious practices of truancy and trespassing on railroad cars, which so seriously discredit Mormon influences, it is a great mystery that juvenile delinquents are so numerous and so enterprising in communities blessed with the untrammeled influence of evan gelicalism. This situation reminds one curiously of the fable of the boastful traveler, who, on returning home, brought witnesses to attest a mighty jump once made by him in Rhodes. N 0 need for witnesses, said his neighbors. Pretend this is Rhodes, and jump again. The marvelous things to be accomplished by the missionaries of our ineffective sects, among the heathen and others, is always out of all proportion to anything they have ever done at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: December 25, 1913 In conclusion, let me say this, Mr. Editor, the writer is a native of Glasgow, Bridgeton, and left Scotland over nineteen years ago for Utah. About twenty-four years ago I took a missionary trip of three days duration in Ayrshire and found that the Opinion was very generally expressed then that nearly twenty or thirty years prior to that time the Mormon elders had gone into that country where the Immortal Robbie says are Honest men and bonnie lassies, and that they took away nearly all of the Best blood of the country, who emigrated to America as members of the 'mormon' Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: September 11, 1913 A certain man was talking with me one day, and when I told him of the gathering of the Jews to Jerusalem, and how a Gentile army would encompass the city, and only be prevented from des troying it by the presence of two prophets within its walls, he took out his note-book and said, And now can you tell me where in the Bible I shall find what you have just said? My! Wasn't I glad I had made a note-book of my memory. You see, I early discovered it was no use talking without positive proof. The elders can carry their Bibles in their pockets, but as I don't have a pocket, the only thing left for me to do is to carry the knowledge in my head, and this course I adopted. I told him to go home and read Zechariah 14th chapter, and Revelation 11th chapter, side by Side, and he would find that what I had said was true. And now came the time when my faith was to be tested to its uttermost; but God gives us nothing to bear without first of all giving us strength to bear it, and so He first of all strengthened my faith, and then He put it to the test. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: August 14, 1913 Small wonder that this inverted pyramid of Oppression, false doctrine, and presumption collapsed from its own top-heaviness. Small wonder, also, that the unthinking element supposes that massacre, murder, violence and bloody doings, in general, are necessary accompaniments of theocracy. This explains many of the wanton charges made against the Mormons; it was associa tion of ideas merely, We Should remember, however, that the word connotes God-government, the scheme promulgated in the Bible; also, that Mormonism advocates neither the first, nor yet the worst form. It merely claims for itself, if it makes a claim in this particular, the same dignity as the visible agent of God which all other bodies assert on their own behalf and such right is guaranteed under our Constitution. However, such is the soul and substance of the famous political menace, in consequence of which, again, we are urged to help quash Mormonism. But, in view of general Shortcomings, why stop with this Church? Why not completely purge the Augean stables of American religion, befouled, as they are, by the cattle of false doctrine, hypocrisy, and Christless self-complacency, and begin anew with the faith that the Savior meant precisely what He said on all matters whatsoever, and nothing else? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: November 20, 1913 We might divide humanity into two classes - they who follow in the footsteps of others and merely exist, and they who act for themselves and We can go in leading-strings throughout our lives, doing certain things simply because someone else did the same, and in this way never accomplish anything praiseworthy. Or we can live a life of individuality, start some truth to rolling, and eventually' attain that Vision which has long been cherished in our hearts. The two courses are optional with us. However, the option is predicated upon certain laws which must be obeyed. In obeying these laws it may necessitate sacrifice of momentary pleasures. But by the use of our inherent reasoning faculties, and by application to the right course, as God reveals it to us, we can surmount most difficulties. Life is no idle dream. Our all-wise Creator has placed us here for a grand and glorious purpose, and it behooves each of as to improve each shining moment. We are not going to achieve any of our high ambitions by procrastination. We can not say, I will begin anew next year, or next month, nor next week; no, not even to-morrow, or in a few moments. We should sense the significance of that maxim of inestimable worth, Do it now, not only saying to our inner self, I will try, but, we can and should, absolutely Do it now. Do not put if off till to-morrow, The present is all thou hast, For the future Will soon be present, And the present will soon be p'ast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: September 22, 1913 The meeting was thrown Open for the discussion Of the subject, and many important questions were asked and answered by the elders. The assembly sang the hymn, See the mighty angel flying. Elder George Duffin gave a paper on Tact in Presenting the Gospel Message. Explained that inasmuch as the gospel has been restored, with the command to carry it unto every nation, kindred, tongue and people, a great responsibility rests upon the handful Of elders who are sent forth to proclaim it. In order to be tactful in presenting the gospel message, we must have the following qualifications Love for the work humility; sincerity, and Obedience. Our authority permits us to take the positive stand and say, Thus saith the Lord. We must never contradict a statement unless we have ample reason for doing so. Seldom debate truths, as they cannot be changed. Study the person with whom you are conversing; remember that he has been born and raised under, and indoctrinated in the tenets of his religion, and it is natural for him to try to defend them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 101: October 19, 1939 Now of course we know that some of our work here is related to the work there. The statement Jesus made, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God, (john 3: 5) expressed a truth that applies to all who enter the celestial kingdom. Baptism is essential to salvation. Even Jesus was baptized to_ fulfil all righteous ness. This being true, not a soul can enter into the kingdom of God unless he or she is a true believer in Jesus Christ, and has been born of the water and of the Spirit. But water is material, earthly substance. Immersion in it is an earthly ordinance and must be done here. Hence the plan provides for the baptism of the dead, vicariously administered - work now going on vigorously in all Latter-day Saint temples. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: October 1, 1908 And now we come to the church which the Messiah, in fulfill ment of the prophecies of ancient prophets, has re-established in the earth in the latter days. Its founder, under God, was an ob scure youth, the son of a humble farmer; its members, like the first disciples of Christ, were from the ranks of the common people; its apostles and prophets were chosen, not for their great learning, for they were not learned men, but for their humility; it was organized 'on the 6th day of April, 1830, with six members: its first places of worship were the groves and little log cabins; it has been opposed by every sect in Christendom; the most bitter persecution has been heaped upon its members; they have been driven from pillar to post, their homes destroyed, their property confiscated, and many of them put to death. But notwithstanding all this the little stohe cut out of the mountain without hands has become a mountain; the grain of mustard seed has developed into a great tree; the Church of Jesus Christ 'of Latter-day Saints has become the envy of other churches. To-day it has a membership of about four hundred thousand; its missionaries are in almost all the nations of the earth, preaching the gospel of the kingdom freely; it has hundreds of large, magnificent places of worship; in fact, it has been pronounced the most remarkable religious organ ization of the age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 80: October 17, 1918 Now, why do we honor Him to-day? Why does the world profess to honor Him? First, because He is the Son of God; and, second, because He was an ideal man. They accept Him as one who was sinless before God, an exemplar to all the world. Then those who follow Him should possess, at least strive every day of their lives to possess, those same characteristics, and approach, at least as near as weakness of mortality will permit. Some of those qualities manifest by their Lord. Regarding the universality of the acceptance of Jesus Christ as the Redeemer. I read recently. In the first place it was and is the will of God that men believe in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and accept Him as their Savior and Redeemer. When certain people asked the Lord, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? His answer was, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
