Small wonder, also, that the unthinking element supposes that massacre, murder, violence and bloody doings, in general, are necessary accompaniments of theocracy. This explains many of the wanton charges made against the Mormons; it was associa tion of ideas merely, We Should remember, however, that the word connotes God-government, the scheme promulgated in the Bible; also, that Mormonism advocates neither the first, nor yet the worst form. It merely claims for itself, if it makes a claim in this particular, the same dignity as the visible agent of God which all other bodies assert on their own behalf and such right is guaranteed under our Constitution. However, such is the soul and substance of the famous political menace, in consequence of which, again, we are urged to help quash Mormonism. But, in view of general Shortcomings, why stop with this Church? Why not completely purge the Augean stables of American religion, befouled, as they are, by the cattle of false doctrine, hypocrisy, and Christless self-complacency, and begin anew with the faith that the Savior meant precisely what He said on all matters whatsoever, and nothing else? I read the Mormon literature, compared the teachings there with the teachings of the Bible, attended their meetings, and finally, being fully convinced that truth was with the Mormons, I applied for baptism and admission into their Church. The first time I met with the elders, I followed their advice, and prayed to God for a testimony of the truth, and that same night. In answer to earnest prayer, I received the assurance within my soul that the Mormon Church was, indeed, the Church of God. But I would not accept the knowledge, I could not, I fought against it with all my available powers. It could not be, it could not 1 The way to heaven through the Church that was every where spoken against! The Mormons God's chosen people Must I join forces with them, and hear my name spoken in terms of contempt and derision It was too much to ask. I could not do it. And yet within my ears sounded ever the words, What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul, and after all, what should I lose? And would not the salvation of my soul more than compensate? And so the battle was fought, truth conquered, and I became a Mormon. The day I was baptized (and in spite of all the world says in derision to the contrary, the truth was prevailing, for four men were baptized on the same occasion, and one little girl), one of the elders (d. G. Selman), addressing the meeting at night, turned to us who had that day taken our stand for God and truth and said, Don't think that the battle is ended, for you it has only just begun. I, for one, was soon to prove the truth of those words. During the two months investigation I had said nothing to my friends of what was taking place within my mind. I felt it was a matter that rested entirely with my own soul and with God. I realized fully that I had a soul to save, and that none but God could aid me, and so I said no word. But when the battle was won, and I had done that from which there was no returning, then I wrote and told my friends What had taken place. The 'mormon' Church has not and cannot change. [shades of the grammarians The only hope for Utah is in the evan gelical churches, and these churches must declare the whole counsel of God, or sadly miss their chance. Well, good, kind, logical gentlemen, declare the whole counsel of God and do it now - it should take the whole time of all of you but do soft-pedal these railing accusations based on the folly of irresponsible children, and omit this hoodlum gossip about unprint table doings which are no monopoly of Mormons, else some of us will conclude that you know little enough of God and His counsels. If the evangelical churches are going to purge Utah of the vicious practices of truancy and trespassing on railroad cars, which so seriously discredit Mormon influences, it is a great mystery that juvenile delinquents are so numerous and so enterprising in communities blessed with the untrammeled influence of evan gelicalism. This situation reminds one curiously of the fable of the boastful traveler, who, on returning home, brought witnesses to attest a mighty jump once made by him in Rhodes. N 0 need for witnesses, said his neighbors. Pretend this is Rhodes, and jump again. The marvelous things to be accomplished by the missionaries of our ineffective sects, among the heathen and others, is always out of all proportion to anything they have ever done at home. The meeting had been publicly advertised for a few days, and on the evening appointed, as the elders, members and friends began to gather at the hall, they encountered one or two hundred men and boys assembled at the entrance, some of whom were busy distributing anti-mormon literature under the direction of'a town church Official. These people were not rude or even disrespectful, although it was evident that their attitude towards us was not altogether friendly. A blind man could have determined the source Of their reluctant antipathy. It was very apparent that it came direct from the mind of an alleged disciple of Him who gave the world that incomparable doctrine of doing unto others as we would have them do unto us. By the time the meeting was called to order there were between three and four hundred people present - the colleagues of the parson at the gate having been respectfully invited to attend the service. Contrary to his expectations, good order prevailed, and the meeting was successfully held. Many of those present heard, for the first time in their lives, the beautiful principles of eternal salvation which we are Offering to the world. The attention was splendid. After the service had concluded, many men and women, hitherto unsympathetic strangers, remained to shake our hands and tell us how interested they were in what they had heard during the course of the meeting. Here is a good example of how the work of Opposition is turned instantly to our purpose. Instead of rousing the ire of the community against the Latter-day Saints and making enemies for us, this good parson got us many friends. This instance is but one in many. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It grows with age. I.see more clearly to-'day than ever before, the end of my mission in the world, that my time is growing shorter. I reflect upon the past, and often wonder how much of the valuable time the Lord has allotted me in this life, have I wasted in folly and useless things; and how much of it havei employed in that which was essential to my salvation, to my growth and development in the knowledge of God and in the' understanding of His truth? I assure you that while it is true that, for the most part of my life, I have been engaged in this ministry, in the work of the Lord, to the best of my understanding, and the ability that the Lord has given me, when I look back upon my life I can see much wasted time, many unimproved moments, numerous things that I have engaged in that were comparatively, at least, unnecessary and hurtful rather than beneficial, and yet nothing that was seriously wrong. There are many things to - day-indulged in by mankind, and by too many of those who have professed belief in the divine mission of the Christ and of His servant Joseph Smith, that are not only contrary to the word of the Lord, and in opposition to the spirit of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but are both in opposition to the Spirit of the Lord and in opposition to the life and health and purity of the souls of men. Some of these evils seem to be grow ing among us. Go where I will, or where I do - and I am going from week to week and from month to month, here and there, in the discharge of my duty - I see evidence of great disrespect to the requirements of the gospel _of Jesus Christ, and I not only see it among the adult citizens of the kingdom, and members of the Church, but I see the bad effects of the example that these adult members of the Church are having upon the youth of Zion. It is neither my wish nor purpose to advertise the weaknesses and imperfections of those who should be Latter-day Saints, and whose lives Should be absolutely above reproach; it is not my wish nor desire to magnify the weaknesses and the imperfections of men; but I see things, day after day, which I think should be corrected, asfar as it is possible for them to be corrected. Let me, without doing it in the spirit of accusation, without charging evil upon the people, speak of some of the things I see, to some extent. I thank the Lord that the evil is no more extensive than it is; I am very grateful that it is confined within the limits to which it is confined.
