Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: April 8, 1909 It is the same with the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Latter-day Saints. It is the gospel of the Son of God, revealed anew in this last dispensation, that has made the name of that man immortal, and the saints the people that they are. Without it, in all proba bility the name of Joseph Smith would not have been known out side the locality in which he resided. Scarcely a day passes with out adding lustre to the name of the latter-day prophet, and as the years go by it will become more and more illustrious. It was the same with President Brigham Young. It was Mormonism, or the gospel of Jesus Christ, which made him the great and mighty man that he was. The-same may be said of all the succeeding presidents of the Church and also of the Latter-day Saints as a whole. In their lives the power of the gospel has been plainly made manifest. What a change the gospel of Christ has Wrought in the lives of tens of thousands of men and women in these latter days; through obedience to its holy principles they have been literally regenerated, born again, made new creatures in Christ Jesus, so that they are able to say with Paul, we are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation. How could we feel ashamed of that which has done so much for us? Well might the Savior say, He that is ashamed of me before men of him will I be ashamed before my Father and before the angels. What have we to be ashamed of, brethren and sisters? Nothing under the sun. On the contrary, we have much to -be proud of. IS the great revelation which the Father and the Son have given of themselves in this dispensation something, to be ashamed of? Verily, no. Think of the state of ignorance from which that glorious manifestation has delivered hundreds of thousands of the human family. What erroneous and absurd ideas we entertained concerning our Father in heaven before the glad tidings of that new revelation reached us. Before, we worshiped we knew not what; now we worship God intelligently, in Spirit and in truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: July 15, 1909 Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (matt. 4: This is a strong refutation of the claims made by some idle talkers that only a part of the Lord's teaching need be heeded. Those who hang on the words, the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin, ignore the fact that Christ did not teach the entire gospel plan every time he Opened His month. He suited His words to the occasion. For instance, when He came to John the Baptist and requested baptism at his hands, He taught only, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. (matt 3: Those words cannot by any reasonable stretch of the imagination be interpreted to mean that the one act or ordinance of baptism is sufficient to fulfill all righteousness. This one act cannot be left undone in the fulfillment of all righteousness; it is necessary along with every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. In this passage we have additional light upon the words of John, But if we walk in the light as he is in the light the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. Christ died for our sins, it is true, and redeemed us from the results of the Fall, doing for us that which we could not do for our selves, but having done that much He expects that we shall take advantage of the light which He brought into the world, and work out our own salvation as He has pointed out the way. Without faith it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. God is no respecter of persons and is to be found by all, the rich as well as the poor, the great and the small, the saint and the sinner, if they will only seek Him in the right spirit, believing that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. But, how shall we go about seeking him? The earnest inquirer asks. The Holy Scriptures give the key: If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. And again: If any man will do the will of the Father he shall know of the doctrine. Seek wisdom of the Lord according to the admonition of the Apostle James and when God sends the light do not ignore it, no matter where it comes from. Do not be guilty of the idle words that many have uttered in these days, Can any good come from the Remember the foolish words of those people in former times who said, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: October 28, 1909 There are things, in connection with this subject, that would not perhaps, be proper to speak of here, before a large and mixed con gregation: but I want to sound a warning to the Latter-day Saints. The time has come for them to look after their children. Every device possible to the understanding and ingenuity of cun ning men, is being used for the purpose of diverting our children from the faith of the gospel and from the love of the truth. Every species of organization is being formed, both in our midst and abroad, having for its object the express purpose of leading astray the children of the Latter-day Saints, because they can't reach their parents. This is their argument: We cannot convert the adult Mormon people, but we may, perhaps, convert their children; we may lead away their children; we do not hope to lead away the Old people. They can't do it, except it may be, now and then, a man or woman who never did know anything parti cularly about the gospel. These, only, are they who can be led away from the truth; and our children can be led away from their parents and from the faith of the gospel, only when they are in a condition that they know not the truth for themselves, not having been taught it, not having had a proper example before them to impress it upon their minds. But when Jesus was baptized and had come out of the water, 10 the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: August 5, 1909 Christ did not frown upon manual labor, for it is related of Him that He labored with His hands, but His lesson to those who would hearken unto Him, was that man's first duty on earth was to fit and prepare himself for an exceeding greater and more glorious existence in the life to come. He gives a promise in connection with the sermon above quoted, that is a test to all who truly believe in Him and love His word. He says, regarding the things of the earth, the meat and the raiment: your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. How important and how true this counsel is, can only be determined by God's children who have proven Him herein. That the Latter-day Saints have a living faith in these words of the blessed Redeemer, we shall show later on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 9, 1908 He that receiveth you, receiveth me, ' said Jesus to His disciples 'and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.' Your friend will admit that the people who rejected the gospel taught by the Lord's divinely-commissioned apostles were just as much under condemnation as those who rejected it when preached by the Master Himself; he will also admit that those who received the gospel taught by the apostles received the same blessings from the Father as though they had received it from the lips of His only begotten Son; and when he admits these things, he must also admit that those who received baptism at the hands of the Lord's servants were just as acceptable to God as they would have been if baptized by His Son Jesus Christ. One day when Christ was teaching in the temple, the chief priests and the elders asked Him by what authority He taught the people. Turning to them He said: 'i also will ask you one thing The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or of. Men?' (matt. 21: 24 Now, had the Lord not considered baptism an essential ordinance, He would not have asked this question. It is only by admitting the essentiality of baptism that we can save our blessed Lord from the charge of having spoken foolishly on that occasion. Had baptism not been considered a saving ordinance of the gospel in the days of the Savior, these people could have turned to the Messiah and said, 'why ask us such a question? Baptism has nothing to do with our salvation, therefore it matters not to'us from whence it came, whether from heaven or of men.' Surely your friend must see that the chief priests and the elders are witnesses against him? Their silence testifies to the importance which the people attached to the ordin ance of baptism in the early days of Christianity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: January 28, 1909 Christians. He had sought for that faith in a number of the leading churches; but had sought in vain. And not only that, but the love which reigned in the hearts of the primitive saints, which found expression in their daily lives, and by which Christ said all men would know that they were His disciples, was also lacking. Like the woman in the Savior's parable who had lost a piece of money and who after diligent search had found it, so be, after searching for years for the primitive Christian faith and the primi tive Christian love, had at last found them in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His first testimony concerning the truth of the gospel taught by the Latter-day Saints was the testi mony of love which he saw the members of the Church bestow up on each other. So you see, brethren and sisters, we can all be missionaries. We cannot all leave our work and go out and distribute tracts; we cannot all stand up and preach, but this we all can do, we can love one another, and this will be a testimony to the world of the truth of Mormonism against which there can be no argument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: January 14, 1909 For nigh unto seventy years the voices of the servants of God have been heard declaring these things unto the people. Tens of thousands of missionaries and hundreds of thousands of lay mem bers of the Church have borne testimony to the world that God had manifested to them by the power of the Holy Ghost that these things are true. Now, the testimony of these thousands of witnesses must be either true or false. If it be true, then all those who reject it will come under the condemnation of the righteous Judge. But if the testimony of these witnesses be false, then condemnation will come upon all those who have borne it, and they will be denounced as deceivers and impostors. It will, therefore, be seen that the testimonies of the Latter-day Saints carry with them either sal vation or condemnation. This is a very serious matter, and we are pleased to know that it. Is beginning to be so considered by many people. A writer in a local paper a short time ago said that Mormonism had ceased to be considered a joke in this country. In the following we shall endeavor to prove that the testi mony of these witnesses is true. Why, the very nature of the testimony, it seems to us, is sufficient to do that. In the first place, why should Joseph Smith come out and declare to the world that, in answer to a fervent prayer which he sent up to the Father on high to point out to him the way of eternal life, the heavens were opened to him, and that in a glorious vision he beheld the Father and the Son; that the Lord conversed with him, and revealed unto him many great and important things pertaining to the salvation of the human family? This young man also declared with the greatest solemnity and soberness that angels ministered unto him from time to time; that they committed unto him a dispensation of the gospel, with authority to officiate in all its ordinances, and that he received from the Lord a commission to re-organize again upon the earth the Church of Christ. In testimony of the truth of these things the prophet sacrificed his life, as did also many of his devoted followers. What object could Joseph Smith have in telling such stories as these if they were not true? He could not expect to bring honor and glory to God by circulating falsehoods concerning Him; nor could he hope to gain the favor of heaven by deceiving his fellows. He could not fail to realize that his state ments, had they been false, would at the last day bring upon him the condemnation of God, who abhors lies and deception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: February 25, 1909 After returning home, and having by diligent labor acquired sufficient means to enable them to fulfill another mission, many of the faithful sons of Zion have done as they did before - laid their all upon the altar and sallied forth to labor for another season in the vineyard of the Lord. Talk about heroes! These men are heroes in the fullest sense of the term. They are the Lord's heroes, and the day will come when they will be crowned and made kings and priests unto God, and shall reign with Him in glory upon the earth. And what do these men look forward to when their earthly missions are ended? To a long period of rest? To sit down in ease and comfort to await the resurrection day, then to receive a crown and a harp and spend eternity singing hymns and psalms and spiritual songs? 0, dear no! They expect when they depart this life to labor, even more diligently if possible, for the salvation of mankind; they expect to go as did the Master, and preach the gospel to those who did not receive it while they were in the flesh. What a glorious mission - saviors of men! Who could desire a greater? This is the work in which these ministers of the Lord will be engaged, and they shall continue in it till the time shall come that was spoken of by the Messiah, when every knee shall bow, and evey tongue confess that Jesus is the Christ, to the glory of God the Father. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: June 17, 1909 Moralists and students of human nature are agreed that most vices are close kindred. 'users of tobacco are often users of liquor and other stimulants. It would be a rare thing to find a user of tobacco Who is not a user of intoxicating drinks or some stimulating drug. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: May 6, 1909 The life of the Book of Mormon is thus seen to hang suspended, as it were, upon the use of a compromising word, a single reference with a distinct modern coloring only, or we might say, the careless slip of a pen. But blunders of this character (so easily made in a spurious work simulating the character of the Book of Mormon) are not found in it. Multitudes of instances of the kind just noticed, and every one of them affording an' Opportunity for dis grace and ruin, swarm about the pathway of any man, unlearned or learned, who dares attempt the task of writing by his own power the history of an ancient people without having a scrap of their authentic history for a guide. Let us now imagine Joseph Smith, a young man, unlearned, un schooled, wholly untrained for writing a book of any kind, not to mention the unusual difficulties and dangers connected with a work like the Book of Mormon, attempting to compose the latter as a religious romance, or a purposed fraud. His knowledge of all ancient matters amounts practically to nothing. (how defiant it was for him to choose the field of which he knew the least for his operations 1) There are limits, or boundaries between the ancient and the modern which he cannot pass, and still retain for a moment the confidence of his fellow-men as an inspired translator of ancient records. We see him reach the line between safety on the one side and discredit and disgrace on the other. This line of separation is sometimes almost invisible, and as he reaches it the impetus of his progress seems sufficient to bear him onward to ruin as a word or two will do the work; but he pauses at the proper point, always pauses there, and some people try to explain his course, or account for his preservation, on one contradictory theory or another, ever failing to perceive that if Joseph Smith were such a man as his opponents claim, he would doubtless have plunged headlong into the first one of these pitfalls that lay hidden from him but so directly in his way.
