Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: November 28, 1907 Satan trembles when he sees The weakest saint upon his knees. The prayer of active faith will erect an impenetrable barrier around us, so that in the moment of temptation we can find safety and deliverance in approaching the Lord for strength and wisdom to overcome. The deep fascination connected with temptation often urges us to recklessly yield, without regarding the sad consequences. Our carnal natures are tempted and we are apt to hastily grasp an opportunity to satisfy them, but if at such peri lous times we would but for a moment wrestle with ourselves, with a reflective and prayerful mind, the evil inclinations would vanish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: November 21, 1907 But let us remember that by the way of the cross the Savior won the victory over death, hell, and the grave, so that at the very place of apparent defeat He triumphed. This teaches us the greatest lesson we can learn - the highest teaching we can receive in that, if we will do the will of God, we Shall make our calling and election sure. Obedience to the Gospel of Jesus Christ will involve and demand sacrifices. If our lives are conditioned to the will of God we will be called upon to endure trials and persecutions, because the same Spiritual powers which opposed Jesus Christ are in antagonism with the work of God at this very hour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: November 7, 1907 All these abuses had been going on for years, yet among the people there was none to arise, condemn and overthrow them as did this humble carpenter's son. The Messiah must certainly have felt the security of His own position before beginning such attacks. Had His own life and conduct not been in conformity with the principles of righteousness, He would not have dared reprove, and that, too, with such severity, the unrighteousness in the lives of those around Him; had He not known that His own character was unassailable, He would not have dared assail the characters of the hypocrites with whom He came in contact; had Christ not known that His life would bear the closest scrutiny, He would not have dared court, as He did, the dis pleasure of all the sects of the day by denouncing their false creeds and false teachers. There is another event in the life of Christ which I consider well worthy of note. It shows the high esteem in which the Messiah was held by thousands of the Jewish people. It is recorded that on one occasion a great company, numbering five thousand men, came to take Him by force and make Him a king. Why did they consider Him worthy of such honor? Certainly not because of His imputed immoralities. No, it was because of His wisdom, of His love for humanity and because of the wonderful works which they had seen Him perform. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: January 17, 1907 The World - Peter, would you have us believe that the Gospel is preached to those who die in ignorance of its divine truths? Peter - I am surprised to hear you ask such a question when so much has been written on the matter. Jesus Christ came, not to save the living only, but the dead also. He declared that if He were lifted up from the earth He would draw all men unto Him, (john 12: and that the hour was coming when the dead, as well as the living, would hear His voice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: January 3, 1907 While we are thankful for the general prosperity our people are enjoying in temporalities, we rejoice still more in the Spiritual progress that is manifest among the Saints, and this in spite of the bitter and unrelenting opposition which they have met both at home and abroad. Some of those who are weak in the faith may have been affected somewhat by the scurrilous attacks made upon the leaders of the Church, but the' majority of the Saints have thereby been more closely knitted together and have become more determined to honor the covenants they have made with the Lord. They see in the persecution they meet an illustration of the words of the Savior: If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. They feel a comfort in knowing that in that sense they are not of the world, and they are willing to bear the indignities heaped upon them, knowing that He whom they serve will pre serve them and overrule for good what their enemies devise for their overthrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: June 27, 1907 In reply to this question I will say that the Elders of the Church have not been sent into the world to tear down any religion. The instructions which we have received from the Lord on this matter are very explicit. They are as follows: Contend against no church save it be the church of the devil. (doe. And Gov. 18: We uphold everything that is good and pure and holy and true, for such cometh of God; we condemn everything that is Sinful, nu holy, unjust and false, for all these come from the evil one. We have been sent into the world, not to condemn the world, but to teach the people the true plan of life and salvation. We have come to tell them, as Jesus told the people in His day, that there is but one way, but one gate, but one straight and narrow path leading to the kingdom of heaven; that there is but one Lord, one faith and one baptism. We have come to tell them that there can be but one true Christian Church; that Christ is not divided, that He is not the author of contention, but of peace; that those who call themselves by His name Should be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment, and that there should be no division among them. Can any reasonable objection be raised to such teaching? IS it not strictly scriptural? Would it not be a glorious sight to see Christians of all denominations united together in love and fellowship, all Speaking the same thing? What a testimony that would be to the world of the divinity of Christ and of the power of His holy Gospel. To this end the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are working, and are meeting with most gratifying success, too. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: February 28, 1907 The story had been widely circulated that he was a polygamist. It started with a sworn affidavit by a Methodist minister and was repeated with additions by a Presbyterian preacher, and was therefore believed by a vast number of the people of the United States, although positive proofs to the contrary were in evidence. The impression thus created so worked upon the religious public, aided by the pulpit and the press, that petitions signed by more than a million of the religious women of the nation poured into the Senate demanding Senator Smoot's expulsion. They were borne into that body by the ton, and public feeling was wrought up into fever heat over the matter. But the United States Senate is a calm and deliberative body, not usually carried away by passion or popular clamor, and so the whole subject was fairly reviewed, the result being that even the Opposition, violent as it was and vindictive as some of its members showed themselves, admitted that Senator Smoot could not be assailed on his personal character, which was above reproach, and that the charges of that kind preferred against him were without foundation in fact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 30, 1907 I desire to impress this thought upon your minds, for I want you to understand that this is the meaning intended to be conveyed by the words, entering into the rest of God. Let me assure you that that man who is not thoroughly established in the doctrine of Christ, who has not yielded his whole soul unto the Lord, and to the Gospel He has taught to the world, has not yet entered into that rest. He is still at sea, so to speak, wandering, unstable, lacking firmness, lacking the faith that cannot be moved, ready to be overtaken by the cunning and craftiness of him who lies in wait to deceive and mislead into error and darkness. While he that has received the testimony of Jesus Christ in his heart, he that has yielded his all to the kingdom of God and to the will of the Father, is so established. His heart is fixed; his mind is made up; doubts have been dispelled; fears have all been removed; he knows in whom to trust; he is thoroughly established in his purposes and in his determination that, as for him and his house he will serve God, keep His commandments and walk, as far as it is possible for human creatures to walk, in purity of life, in honor, fidelity, and uprightness before the Lord. I thank my God that this spirit and feeling of unrest has been removed from my thoughts and mind with reference to the work in which we are engaged; and that the Lord has given me assur ance that is beyond all other things in relation to this matter. I rejoice in the Gospel; I rejoice in the testimony of the Spirit of God in my heart; I rejoice in the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith; I rejoice in every principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we have become acquainted with, so far as my knowledge goes. I cannot ask for, I do not want anything better than the principles of life and salvation revealed in this great plan of re demption restored to the earth in the latter days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: June 13, 1907 Let us begin with considering the case of alms without prayers; that is, of good works without piety, or a proper sense of God and religion. Examples of this are not uncommon in the world. With many virtue is, or at least is pretended to be, a respectable and an honored name, while piety sounds meanly in their ears. They are men of the world, and they claim to be men of honor. They rest upon their humanity, their public spirit, their probity, and their truth. They arrogate to themselves all the manly and the active virtues; but devout affections and religious duties they treat with contempt, as founded on shadowy speculations, and fit to employ the attention only of weak and superstitious minds. Now, in opposition to such persons I contend that this neglect of piety argues depravity of heart; and that it infers an irregular discharge of the duties of morality. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: October 10, 1907 Man has faith in man, but how often we are afraid to trust our Father in Heaven. He has placed us here, and His providence is over all. Everything is done by Him in order. There are certain laws which govern the universe, and certain laws that govern our lives, and if we have faith enough to bring ourselves into line with those laws, we are correspondingly happy. If we rebel, we pro duce friction, which causes pain. If we have an intelligent faith in God, and are keeping His laws as far as we understand them, everything that happens to us must be the best thing that could happen at that particular time, and if we have absolute faith in our Father we shall acknowledge this, although in our ignorance we may not be able to see it just then. It is this absolute faith that is needed to take the sting out of life and make it happy. We must not depend upon circumstances for our happiness, but we must learn to trust our Father implicitly. Faith has done mighty things. By it we can obtain all things. Paul said, I can do all things through Christ which strengthen eth me. That does away with all I can'ts. By faith the humble fishermen of Galilee were able to teach the world. By faith the Elders of Israel can do the same. Though they may not be highly educated, they can confute the learned men of the day. In the eleventh chapter of Hebrews we see what faith can do. Take, for instance, the Prophet Joseph Smith, whose faith brought God the Eternal Father and His Son Jesus Christ from heaven to give instructions to a mere boy. When I was quite a girl I began to may for a certain thing. I prayed twice daily for twelve years, and then God abundantly answered my prayers in a way far beyond what I had hoped or even thought of. God lives, and by faith, if we keep His laws, we can claim from Him what we ask. Jesus said, If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done. Paul said to the former-day saints, Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. We need have no fear, we need not worry over things, for all things work together for good to them that love God.
