Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: July 4, 1907 Apostles' Quorum. Previous to his death, Joseph Smith conferred upon the Twelve Apostles all the keys, power and authority per taining to the Church. After the assassination of the Prophet, Brigham Young was chosen as his successor and was the second President of the Church. I cannot tell you how many wives these men had. I will say, however, that they were polygamists. So were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and other ancient worthies. They took their wives in obedience to a command of God, in order to raise up a righteous seed. The Latter-day Saints believe with the prophet of old that children are an heritage of the Lord, and that a man is blessed who has his quiver full of them. Neither Joseph Smith nor Brigham Young was able to boast of a college education, but in this respect they were not one whit behind the early Apostles. You remember what Paul said to his fellow-ser vants in the ministry: For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath Chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty that no flesh should glory in his presence. (i. Cor. 1: 26, 27, Now, if the Lord could use unlearned and ignorant men, as His early Apostles were denominated, why should it be' considered a strange thing that He should choose Joseph Smith and Brigham Young to assist Him in laying the foundation of His great latter-day work. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were taught of God. The great and marvelous work which these men have ao complished bear testimony to the truth of this statement; for no men could have done the work that was accomplished by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young without the aid of the Almighty. For an estimate of Joseph Smith I refer you to Josiah Quincy, author of the book Figures of the Past, etc. He visited Joseph Smith at N auvoo a little before the tragedy at Carthage, and after the Prophet's death wrote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 30, 1907 I desire to impress this thought upon your minds, for I want you to understand that this is the meaning intended to be conveyed by the words, entering into the rest of God. Let me assure you that that man who is not thoroughly established in the doctrine of Christ, who has not yielded his whole soul unto the Lord, and to the Gospel He has taught to the world, has not yet entered into that rest. He is still at sea, so to speak, wandering, unstable, lacking firmness, lacking the faith that cannot be moved, ready to be overtaken by the cunning and craftiness of him who lies in wait to deceive and mislead into error and darkness. While he that has received the testimony of Jesus Christ in his heart, he that has yielded his all to the kingdom of God and to the will of the Father, is so established. His heart is fixed; his mind is made up; doubts have been dispelled; fears have all been removed; he knows in whom to trust; he is thoroughly established in his purposes and in his determination that, as for him and his house he will serve God, keep His commandments and walk, as far as it is possible for human creatures to walk, in purity of life, in honor, fidelity, and uprightness before the Lord. I thank my God that this spirit and feeling of unrest has been removed from my thoughts and mind with reference to the work in which we are engaged; and that the Lord has given me assur ance that is beyond all other things in relation to this matter. I rejoice in the Gospel; I rejoice in the testimony of the Spirit of God in my heart; I rejoice in the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith; I rejoice in every principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we have become acquainted with, so far as my knowledge goes. I cannot ask for, I do not want anything better than the principles of life and salvation revealed in this great plan of re demption restored to the earth in the latter days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 23, 1907 Christianity of the present day cannot be held in very high es teem by the people of England when they go about seeking to destroy its fundamental principles. But why should the editor of the Times exhibit such fears for the fundamentals of Christian ity? If they are true, if they are the principles of eternal life which were taught by Christ and His apostles, they cannot be overthrown; they will stand forever. If the Christianity of Eng land is built upon the rock of eternal truth; if its ministers have been called of God as were the apostles of old; if their acts have His divine approval; if the doctrines which they teach are the doctrines of the Lord Jesus Christ, it has got nothing to fear from the presence in England of a mere handful of Mormon mission aries. 'christ can take care of His own work; if He cannot, the editor of the Rochdale Times can't save it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 16, 1907 The question is often asked by people in the world, What need have we for the Book of Mormon, seeing we have the Bible? AS well might the question be asked, What need have we for a his tory of America, seeing we have the History of England? Why Should the ancient inhabitants of the Western continent not have a history and a religion as well as the ancient inhabitants of the Eastern continent? Without taking up time and space with further preliminaries, I Shall proceed with the very pleasing duty which I have assigned myself, namely, to prove, from the Holy Scriptures, the divine authenticity of the Book of Mormon. It is recorded in the Book of Mormon that when the Lord con founded the language of the people at the Tower of Babel, He led a colony across the waters of the great ocean and planted them on the western shore of North America. The history of this colony is found in the Book of Ether, which forms part of the Book of Mormon. Now, the Prophet Moses gives confirmation to this statement. We learn by his writings that when the Lord confounded the language of the people of Babel He scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth. (gen. 11: By admitting, which every one does, that America at that time was part of all the earth, the world acknowledges the truth of the Book of Mormon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: August 8, 1907 I like this dreamer, Joseph. He was assailed and laughed at and sold finally into slavery, but nothing could move him from obedience to present high duty or shake him from an implicit trust in his God. What can thwart such a man? What can overcome him? Everywhere and always the man with such courage will carry the emblems of victory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: August 15, 1907 What a change has come over that part of the world since those days! Utah, which was then a barren waste, has become a fruit ful field. Through the blessings of Jehovah, a land, which was once the home of wild beasts and venomous reptiles, has been transformed into a garden of roses. Thousands of fine homes dot the land in which at one time could be seen only the dilapidated Wigwam of the poor redskin, the American Indian. Had it not been for the unfaltering faith which they had in God, and for the power which He gave them, the Saints would never have been able to accomplish the marvelous achievements which they have accomplished, and which have called forth the admiration of thou sands who have visited our State. At the great expositions in America our fruits have been awarded first prize, and our wheat has been sought for by the merchants of the Orient. Through the blessings of the Lord the soil of Utah has been made to produce an abundance for both man and beast, while the mountains have yielded their rich treasures of gold and silver. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: October 17, 1907 After Dr. Murray came the Bishop of Thetford, who asked what the Church was doing for the spiritual bettering and uplifting of the lives of men. In his judgment they were wickedly wasting their time by the incessant talk of how they should do God's work instead of doing it. One of the greatest faults, perhaps, in the Church of' England had been that she had shown a very decided slowness and perhaps, even reluctance, to make room for new exhibitions of the workings of spiritual powers. It was surely something of a shock, and certainly a very humbling disgrace to all Christian bodies that no fewer than thirty millions of our people went to no place of worship whatever. It certainly ought to be a humbling disgrace to all Christian bodies that thirty millions of the people of England attend no place of worship whatever. But to the Latter-day Saints this is not surprising. The churches of the world, notwithstanding their great pretensions, are as destitute of spiritual power as were the seven sons of Sceva. Why has the Church of England not given any exhibitions of spiritual powers? The answer is plain: because She has had none to Show. And the same may be said of the other churches. While walking along a street in one of the towns in England recently the writer saw a horse yoked to a large wagon of coal. The poor animal had stopped, and not all the whippings nor persuasions of its driver could get it to proceed. It could not do so, its strength was gone. The driver had finally to unyoke the animal and take him home. This illustrates the condition of the sectarian churches. Their power, such as it was, has departed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: September 26, 1907 A baptismal service was held at Thorncliff Farm, Hollingworth, on the 15th inst., when six converts to the Gospel of Christ received the ordinance of baptism at the hands of Elder Alma Revoir. Elder Edwin Miles writes: It gives me pleasure to report a substantial increase in the Sheffield branch. We held a baptismal service at Glossop Road Baths, on Sunday, the 15th inst. Elder John J. Hendry and President Abel G. Rich explained the neces sity and sacredness of the ordinance to be performed, and exhorted those who were about to enter the door into the sheepfold to re main true to the covenants they were making with the Lord. Fourteen persons (eleven males and three females) then received the ordinance of baptism at the hands of President A. G. Rich and Elder Heber C. Mansfield. Our hall is almost filled every Sunday evening; our graded Sunday School is well attended, and the spirit of love and unity exists among the Saints. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: June 4, 1908 Fairchild 'of Oberlin College, Ohio, U. S. A., and on comparison with the Book of Mormon it was found to be totally different in every particular from that work, and it is now kept in the library of that institution, and has been copied and printed and is offered for sale wherever the Book of Mormon is published. All this has been threshed out so often as to have become monotonous to many people, and we apologize to the readers of the star for recurring to the subj ect, but its recent revival gives reason for this reference. As is well known to everybody who has seen the Book of Mormon, it has for a preface the testimony of Three Witnesses that the plates from which it was translated were shown to them by an angel of God, and of eight witnesses that they had seen and handled the plates by natural means, and had inspected the hieroglyphics engraved thereupon. In the leaflets now distributed, and in the puerile attempt of a Liverpool clergyman to attack this testimony, it is stated that the Three Witnesses spoken of left the Mormon Church and denied their former statement. It is for the purpose of showing the utter falsity of this recent fabrication that we take up the matter again. Here is the testimony of the Three Witnesses as it has appeared in every issue of the Book of Mormon from the opening of the year 1830 to the present time: Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come, that we, through the grace of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of N ephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken; and we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for His voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety, that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ that we beheld and bear record that these things are true; and it is marvelous in our eyes, nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found Spotless before the judgment seat of Christ and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: July 16, 1908 In the southern part of Utah lived a poor widow and her son. The latter was a wild and reckless youth, frequently getting into trouble and causing his mother much sorrow. He was considered the terror of the town in which he lived. The bishop of the ward and his counselors met one evening to consider his case. They decided, provided the young man were agreeable, to send him to the Brigham Young College at Provo. They had two objects in this: first, to get rid of him, and second, to reform him. They offered to pay the expense of his tuition.
