Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: August 8, 1907 I like this dreamer, Joseph. He was assailed and laughed at and sold finally into slavery, but nothing could move him from obedience to present high duty or shake him from an implicit trust in his God. What can thwart such a man? What can overcome him? Everywhere and always the man with such courage will carry the emblems of victory. It is so here, but in a far higher sense it will be so in the celestial kingdom. - rev. Benjamin young. IT will pay to listen to good advice. We may not always be able to follow that counsel, but it will help us about making up our minds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: August 15, 1907 What a change has come over that part of the world since those days! Utah, which was then a barren waste, has become a fruit ful field. Through the blessings of Jehovah, a land, which was once the home of wild beasts and venomous reptiles, has been transformed into a garden of roses. Thousands of fine homes dot the land in which at one time could be seen only the dilapidated Wigwam of the poor redskin, the American Indian. Had it not been for the unfaltering faith which they had in God, and for the power which He gave them, the Saints would never have been able to accomplish the marvelous achievements which they have accomplished, and which have called forth the admiration of thou sands who have visited our State. At the great expositions in America our fruits have been awarded first prize, and our wheat has been sought for by the merchants of the Orient. Through the blessings of the Lord the soil of Utah has been made to produce an abundance for both man and beast, while the mountains have yielded their rich treasures of gold and silver. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 30, 1907 I desire to impress this thought upon your minds, for I want you to understand that this is the meaning intended to be conveyed by the words, entering into the rest of God. Let me assure you that that man who is not thoroughly established in the doctrine of Christ, who has not yielded his whole soul unto the Lord, and to the Gospel He has taught to the world, has not yet entered into that rest. He is still at sea, so to speak, wandering, unstable, lacking firmness, lacking the faith that cannot be moved, ready to be overtaken by the cunning and craftiness of him who lies in wait to deceive and mislead into error and darkness. While he that has received the testimony of Jesus Christ in his heart, he that has yielded his all to the kingdom of God and to the will of the Father, is so established. His heart is fixed; his mind is made up; doubts have been dispelled; fears have all been removed; he knows in whom to trust; he is thoroughly established in his purposes and in his determination that, as for him and his house he will serve God, keep His commandments and walk, as far as it is possible for human creatures to walk, in purity of life, in honor, fidelity, and uprightness before the Lord. I thank my God that this spirit and feeling of unrest has been removed from my thoughts and mind with reference to the work in which we are engaged; and that the Lord has given me assur ance that is beyond all other things in relation to this matter. I rejoice in the Gospel; I rejoice in the testimony of the Spirit of God in my heart; I rejoice in the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith; I rejoice in every principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we have become acquainted with, so far as my knowledge goes. I cannot ask for, I do not want anything better than the principles of life and salvation revealed in this great plan of re demption restored to the earth in the latter days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: January 3, 1907 While we are thankful for the general prosperity our people are enjoying in temporalities, we rejoice still more in the Spiritual progress that is manifest among the Saints, and this in spite of the bitter and unrelenting opposition which they have met both at home and abroad. Some of those who are weak in the faith may have been affected somewhat by the scurrilous attacks made upon the leaders of the Church, but the' majority of the Saints have thereby been more closely knitted together and have become more determined to honor the covenants they have made with the Lord. They see in the persecution they meet an illustration of the words of the Savior: If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. They feel a comfort in knowing that in that sense they are not of the world, and they are willing to bear the indignities heaped upon them, knowing that He whom they serve will pre serve them and overrule for good what their enemies devise for their overthrow. Where there has been a lack of confidence in some of these enterprises, and private capital has been afraid to invest, the Church has furnished funds that the practicability of the under taking might be demonstrated; and repeatedly the wisdom of this policy has been made manifest. Thereby the resources of various localities have been developed, community interests diversified, and the people, especially the poor, given increased opportunity of employment and a better chance to become self-sustaining. And what has been the testimony of these thousands of faithful servants? This, that during no other period of their lives have they had half the joy and satisfaction they experienced while in the mission field. There is no work in the world to compare with that of saving souls. The man that saves a soul approximates to the God who created that soul. Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 69 written by Charles W. Penrose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: July 4, 1907 Apostles' Quorum. Previous to his death, Joseph Smith conferred upon the Twelve Apostles all the keys, power and authority per taining to the Church. After the assassination of the Prophet, Brigham Young was chosen as his successor and was the second President of the Church. I cannot tell you how many wives these men had. I will say, however, that they were polygamists. So were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and other ancient worthies. They took their wives in obedience to a command of God, in order to raise up a righteous seed. The Latter-day Saints believe with the prophet of old that children are an heritage of the Lord, and that a man is blessed who has his quiver full of them. Neither Joseph Smith nor Brigham Young was able to boast of a college education, but in this respect they were not one whit behind the early Apostles. You remember what Paul said to his fellow-ser vants in the ministry: For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath Chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty that no flesh should glory in his presence. (i. Cor. 1: 26, 27, Now, if the Lord could use unlearned and ignorant men, as His early Apostles were denominated, why should it be' considered a strange thing that He should choose Joseph Smith and Brigham Young to assist Him in laying the foundation of His great latter-day work. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were taught of God. The great and marvelous work which these men have ao complished bear testimony to the truth of this statement; for no men could have done the work that was accomplished by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young without the aid of the Almighty. For an estimate of Joseph Smith I refer you to Josiah Quincy, author of the book Figures of the Past, etc. He visited Joseph Smith at N auvoo a little before the tragedy at Carthage, and after the Prophet's death wrote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: April 11, 1907 But, beyond all these, breathing into every other aspect of this faith the breath of life, stands one basic principle, that of direct, and the right to continuous revelation from God. This doctrine dominates and cements all phases of Mormonism. Man has a right to immediate and uninterrupted communication with his Father in heaven through agencies which God constituted, and it is given man to know for himself, by right living, whether all that is said to be of God comes really from that source. The declaration may perhaps appear bold, may perhaps shock some, but it seems that Christian religions generally afford few really satisfying reasons. For man's existence. And the inward voice often asks After all, are the hopes and joys of life worth the efforts and penalties existence entails? The increasing number of failures and suicides indicate that a negative reply is more often returned with the added years.
