This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: March 15, 1906 Let me say to our young men who are here studying different branches of learning: Hunt up your friends; associate with your brethren and sisters. DO not pull away from them; do not keep yourselves aloof from them. GO to their meetings. Go to the presiding authorities and talk with them. Say to them, Here I am. If you can use me for any good, do so. If I have talent and ability to do anything you want me to do to roll on the work of the Lord and to convince the honest in heart of the truth we have received, here I am, ready to be used for the accomplishment of God's purposes whenever it is possible for me to get away from my studies. Now, boys, do this. Remem ber the Old saying, that it is not all of life to live; nor is it all of death to die. There is something more in life than the mere living - eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. Men will be held accountable before the great Judge Of the quick and the dead for the deeds done in the flesh. You cannot avoid that. You are not here by chance. You came here by the will of God, according to His design, to fulfil His purposes; and you came here without Seeking it yourself, so far as this world is concerned. You are entities; you have living souls within you; and you will be raised' from the dead just as sure as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. As sure as by Adam you die. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: July 19, 1906 On the fact of the inspiration of the prophets and apostles of the Lord, the early fathers were unanimous, and they quoted copiously from their writings in support of their own teachings. But on the question of how God inspired them, they were not clear, and perhaps that is one reason why some of those excellent men fell into the absurd error of regarding the verses of the pagan sibyls as also divinely inspired. Though these sibyls were no better than our gipsy fortune tellers, Justin, Clement of Alexandria, Athenagoras, Theophilus of Antioch, Origin, Tertullian, and even Augustine, quote them so earnestly that the early Christians were derisively called sibyllists. Had they had a clearer appreciation of the nature of divine inspiration, they would perhaps not have fallen in this peculiar error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: January 4, 1906 One striking evidence of the faith of the Saints is their fidelity in the pay ment of tithes, in their offerings for the poor, in the erection of substantial and elegant houses of worship, in the maintenance of missions, and the sup port given generally to all measures for the spread of the work of the Lord. Our people are gradually following the advice given to get out of debt. It is confidently hoped that the Church itself will, before long, be free from the bonded indebtedness which has been a burden upon it for some time. It will be glad tidings to us all, if by the next Christmas day we can declare, truth fully, that we owe no man anything, but to love one another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: April 5, 1906 This week we present on our front page a picture of the conference house at Christiania, Norway. This house is of more than usual interest, as it is the first building of its kind which the Church owned in the European mission, and for many years the only one. The first building was erected in 1870-1. It was a three story structure, containing basement rooms, apartments to let on the first and second floors, and a large and commodious hall for meeting purposes on the third. There were also living rooms for the Elders on this floor. The building served the large and prosperous Christiania branch for about thirty years, when because of the sinking of some of the walls, it was thought best to tear it down and erect a new building. This new structure was dedicated on the 24th of July, 1903, by President Francis M. Lyman. At the services there were about one hundred and forty-five Elders from various parts of the European mission, and a most glorious time was had. Our cut represents this new building. Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 74 written by Rudger Clawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 74: February 22, 1912 Let us consider these scraps in order. The Roman Catholic Church claims to hold the authority of the Priesthood; so do we. The claim to authority - to sole authority - is necessary to the Church of Christ, as God does not leave His Priesthood scattered among a multiplicity of warring sects. This claim to sole author ity is the strongest point in the Roman Catholic faith, and the rock on which so many Protestant arguments are wrecked. So, if Joseph Smith took this scrap of Catholicism, he certainly used good judgment in his selection. We next take the Protestant scrap - that of refusing to re cognize the authority of Rome because of the general apostasy. Strange as it may seem, this is also the strongest point in the Episcopal faith, for in matters of ceremonial, doctrine and ritual, the High Church and the Catholics are so similar that, except for this one point, they might be one. But unless the Romish claim to authority is wrong, the Church of England - or any other, for that matter, has no excuse for existing. The weak point in this argument is that, while the Church of England denies the authority of Rome, it offers nothing in its place. The Baptist Church also has one real strong point, and only' one-that of baptism by immersion, which is the true and correct form. We also believe in that, and again remark, if Joseph Smith has been picking up scraps, he used wonderful care in selecting them, taking the best from the three creeds so far mentioned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: February 6, 1913 A new work entitled, The Restoration of the Gospel, by Prof. Osborne J. P. Widtsoe, a.m., Principal of the Latter-day Saints' High School, Salt Lake City, Utah, has but recently issued from the Deseret News press. It was passed upon by a committee under appointment from the First Presidency, and therefore comes to the public strongly recommended. The following observation is made by Professor Widtsoe in his Foreword: The brief treatment of the Restoration of the Gospel herewith presented to the public is not intended to be in any wise a history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is at most a story of the Restoration. It presumes at the outset that some thing has been restored. It relates how this something was restored. Every missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has met these two questions when he has preached abroad the Gospel of the restorati011: -what was restored? How was it restored? These two questions the follow ing chapters attempt to answer in part. It is but fair and just to say that he has handled the subject admirably. Many strong and convincing facts are skilfully woven together in chronological order, and prove beyond successful contradiction the need of a Restoration. While this is the particular and Special theme of the work, much valuable information is Contained in the chapters entitled, Sacred Writings of Old, A Sacred Book of To-day, The Gospel Brotherhood, A New and Everlasting Covenant, The Vision of Glories, In the Mouths of Witnesses, The Test of Section Sixty-seven.
