Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: April 19, 1906 The well known hymn beginning with the verse quoted above is from the pen of William Clayton, one of the pioneers, and for some time the private secretary of the Prophet Joseph Smith. He was a gifted writer, and it is a matter of regret that this and one other hymn beginning, When first the glorious light of truth, Burst forth in this last age, are the only two which have been left by him to the Church. The latter is a favorite funeral hymn, and both are written in much the same vein. The theme of reward in the hereafter for the suffering Saints on earth seems to have been prominent in the author's mind, and it is not difficult to tell from the tenor of the lines that he was one who endured much for the Gospel's sake. Of all the songs of Zion, perhaps none is more dear to the hearts of a great number of Latter-day Saints than Come, come, ye Saints. Especially dear was it to the pathfinders of Mormonism, who found comfort and strength in its inspiriting lines. As they sang it in unison on their weary marches toward the west, they took to heart its lesson of optimism, which gave them courage to continue their painful and hazardous journey. It was composed while the Saints were passing through some of their most trying ordeals, and its lines tell an eloquent tale of the great and holy trust which the devoted little band placed in their Heavenly Father. The early Latter day Saints had been driven from their homes under circumstances of the greatest barbarity; they had lost practically all their earthly possessions; but with hearts filled with hope they turned their faces toward the golden west, and said within themselves, We'll find the place which God for us prepared, Far away, in the west. How heavily weighted they were with sorrow as they severed all connections with civilization and began their dreary journey, we can only surmise, yet they never once let the beacon star of Hope descend below the horizon. They endeavored to be cheerful, even in the midst of difficulties which would appal the stoutest heart, and in order to stimulate light-hearted ness and keep their weary souls from flagging, they devised all manner of pleasant entertainments around the camp fire after the tedious journey of the day was done. Singing and dancing were indulged in, and many a care was lost sight of in the maze of the dance, or the swell of the music as all joined in the song. Naturally the hymn of their faith and hopes was a great favorite, and Come, come, ye Saints was on everyone's lips. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: June 21, 1906 Briefly stated, then, the true doctrine of the origin and destiny of man is this: Man is the actual, spiritual offspring of God. His first appearance, as far as we have any record, was in the world preceding this, and this earth-life is the second stage in his existence. He is gradually rising and growing in intelligence, and will continue to do so, worlds upon worlds, until he becomes perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Is this glorious doctrine blasphemy? Nay, it is sublimity! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: May 3, 1906 Parents are thus made responsible, as they certainly should be, for the proper training of their children. As soon as they manifest the capacity to obtain knowledge, instruction that will lead them eternal life should be given. The introduction to the process of becoming saved is plain and simple: faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ, repentance of sins, etc. Had Joseph Smith neglected to provide ample means for the education of children, his system would have been very incomplete. Had he placed more emphasis on the study of history, language, geography, etc., than on the ele mentary conditions of obtaining divine knowledge, he would have simply followed well established precedents. Having, however, established a proper foundation, he goes on to explain that his students must be conducted into all the fields of knowledge. They are not to be so captivated with the beauty and dignity of the spiritual idea as to become impracticable. On the other hand, his system provides that the justification of the practical is found in its inestimable contributions to the ideal. His students are not to be seduced by the wealth and Splendor of the means of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: March 15, 1906 Let me say to our young men who are here studying different branches of learning: Hunt up your friends; associate with your brethren and sisters. DO not pull away from them; do not keep yourselves aloof from them. GO to their meetings. Go to the presiding authorities and talk with them. Say to them, Here I am. If you can use me for any good, do so. If I have talent and ability to do anything you want me to do to roll on the work of the Lord and to convince the honest in heart of the truth we have received, here I am, ready to be used for the accomplishment of God's purposes whenever it is possible for me to get away from my studies. Now, boys, do this. Remem ber the Old saying, that it is not all of life to live; nor is it all of death to die. There is something more in life than the mere living - eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. Men will be held accountable before the great Judge Of the quick and the dead for the deeds done in the flesh. You cannot avoid that. You are not here by chance. You came here by the will of God, according to His design, to fulfil His purposes; and you came here without Seeking it yourself, so far as this world is concerned. You are entities; you have living souls within you; and you will be raised' from the dead just as sure as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. As sure as by Adam you die. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: May 24, 1906 In the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Now it is a scriptural fact that Adam did not die in twenty-four hours after partaking of the fruit. We find that he lived to be nearly a thousand years old. We may gather from this that a day with the Lord may be a great period of time with us. As the forces have acted on the earth during these periods, they have tended to make the earth a better dwelling place for mankind. As man has progressed, so the earth has progressed to meet his demands. Through the countless years, rivers have been formed which make commerce easier for man. The eruptions which have taken place, and the action of water in wear ing the crust of the earth down have made it possible for man to gain access to the minerals which are so needful to him; and thus we can see how the earth is bettering itself for the abode of man. Every atom of matter must fill the measure of its creation. Man expects through the Gospel plan to become perfect even as God is perfect. Man came here upon the earth to gain a schooling that was necessary to advance him up the scale of progression. This earth was made for this express purpose, and since it has been progress ing with man thus far, why will it not progress further? Man looks forward to being resurrected and becoming an immortal being. Paul said, If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. This is true. Man's thoughts go beyond the grave, possibly to some imaginary heaven on some other planet. If this earth was made for man, why not this earth be the planet? I do not mean in the con dition it is now, but in a condition that would be fit for exaltation. If man is resurrected, why may not the earth also be regenerated and become the abode of immortals? Why should we think to live on another planet when this earth has nourished us while going through our schooling? The Savior, in speaking to the apostles of future glory said, I say unto you, ye which have followed me in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The word regeneration means to change, or a new birth. Peter also voices this same thought. When speaking to the people at Solomon's temple, he said, Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the time of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you; whom the heaven must receive until the time of the resti tution of all things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: June 28, 1906 The Prophet's prediction that there was a Judas in their midst soon proved too true, and there were more than one. William Law, Joseph's second counselor, William Marks, president of the Nauvoo Stake, with many other leading men proved themselves false to Joseph and the Church. They even planned with Joseph's enemies to have him killed. They were also proved guilty of other were soon cut off from the Church. Joseph's times of peace were not many nor very long. Apostates were his worst enemies, and they were all the time annoying him by having him ar rested upon all kinds of charges. These men were very bitter, and howled around him like a pack of wolves, eager to devour him; but Joseph trusted in the Saints, and they in him, for those who were faithful to their duties knew by the Spirit of God that Joseph was not a fallen prophet as his enemies claimed. In June, 1844, the enemies of the Saints began to publish a paper in Nau voo called the Expositor. Its purpose was to deprive the people of Nauvoo of their rights, so it boldly said. One number was printed, and that was so full of false statements and abuse against the city officials that the city council declared it a nuisance and had the press, type, etc., destroyed. This raised great excitement among the enemies of the Church. Joseph and seventeen others were arrested, tried before a court in Nauvoo, and ac quited; but this did not satisfy the mobbers. On the advice of the United States judge for that district, Joseph and his brethren allowed themselves to be arrested again, and they had a trial before Justice Daniel H. Wells, then not a Mormon. They were again discharged as innocent of any crime. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: November 8, 1906 Prophet Joseph Smith, they have asked and they have received; they have knocked and the door has been opened unto them; they have sought and they have found. The words of the prophet were bold. They were not as the words of the scribes and Pharisees. They were the words of a prophet of God, of an inspired man or boy, because he was but a boy at that time. And therefore he was hold to speak God's words, knowing that the Lord God Almighty who inspired him was able to fulfill. And so I might go on. In almost every revelation that was given by the Prophet Joseph Smith in those days, there were promises made, and those promises were not based upon what might appear to be reasonable, or something that seemed to be in reach, or would come to pass eventually, but they were based on the knowledge that he possessed and that was given to him by inspiration. At another time, after the organization of the Church, Joseph Smith declared that before the great and dreadful day of the Lord should come, Zion should flourish in the tops of the mountains. Why, the Saints at that time lived down on the flats on the western borders of New York, in a flat country in Ohio, and on the plains and prairies of Illinois, and they did not know any thing about mountains. Joseph Smith had never seen a mountain, but yet he declared, and it is recorded, that before the great and dreadful day of the Lord, Zion should flourish in the tops of the mountains. N ow, it was a great many years before the Saints gathered to the tops of the mountains. But they are there to-day in the tops of the mountains, on the very backbone of the continent of America, where the waters flow on one side to the Pacific and on the other side to the Atlantic, and there they are growing and flourishing. This is a fulfillment of the Prophet's prediction. In 1832 Joseph Smith penned the following: Verily, thus saith the Lord, concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls. (and, mark you, this was penned in 1831, many years before the war.) The days will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at that place; for behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and thus war shall be poured out upon all nations. And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshalled and disciplined for war: and it shall come to pass also, that the remnants who are left of the land will marshall themselves, and shall become exceeding angry, and shall vex the Gentiles (that means the Lamanites) with a sore vexation and thus, with the sword, and by bloodshed, the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquakes, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation and chastening hand of an Al mighty God, until the consumption decreed, hath made a full end of all nations; that the cry of the saints, and of the blood of the saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies. Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: January 18, 1906 IT is remarkable how the Lord raises up friends to His servants while they are engaged in the ministry. In whatever part of the world they may labor, the Latter-day Saint missionaries meet with those who befriend them in a most unexpected manner. People that become thus friendly are sometimes those who are earnestly seeking the truth and are interested in the Gospel message, at other times they do not accept the Gospel, but continue to remain friendly with the Elders, and go to considerable trouble and expense, and at times even risk their lives, to assist and defend them. To do this it often requires not only considerable physical courage but moral courage as well, owing to the unpopularity of the Mormon missionaries and their doctrines. The only way to account for the friendship shown by such persons is to ac knowledge that the Lord has wrought upon their hearts to assist His servants who are dependent upon Him for support. Upon one occasion when the Prophet Joseph Smith was arrested upon a trumped up charge, a lawyer was influenced to defend him in court through hearing a mysterious, audible voice commanding him to do so. The writer remembers meeting a gentleman in England who had made it a practice of defending the doctrines taught by the Latter-day Saints, and of assisting the Elders whenever he met them. He carried a well-worn Ready Reference with him, and was well posted on our doctrines. His business took him to various parts of the country, and in his travels he would occasion ally meet our missionaries, attend the services, and sometimes hire meeting halls for them.
