Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: February 15, 1906 Built by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1834. Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Succession by Decision of Court February, 1880. By order of the court appeared to the party a very poor and insufficient claim without a vestige of proof of divine authority. No' 'order of the court can transmit the succession of the Holy Priesthood or of the spirit, power, and religious rights of the Church established by revelation from God. These are not within the jurisdiction of any civil tribunal. The legal possession of the Kirtland Temple was not contested by this Church and no appearance was made for it at the trial instituted by the Reorganizers. The title to the property is one thing, the succession of the Church authorities is another and different thing, involving principles that no worldly opinion or edict can affect either in time or in eternity. But the party was not therefor argument or protest, and while saying nought, kept up considerable thinking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: May 24, 1906 In the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Now it is a scriptural fact that Adam did not die in twenty-four hours after partaking of the fruit. We find that he lived to be nearly a thousand years old. We may gather from this that a day with the Lord may be a great period of time with us. As the forces have acted on the earth during these periods, they have tended to make the earth a better dwelling place for mankind. As man has progressed, so the earth has progressed to meet his demands. Through the countless years, rivers have been formed which make commerce easier for man. The eruptions which have taken place, and the action of water in wear ing the crust of the earth down have made it possible for man to gain access to the minerals which are so needful to him; and thus we can see how the earth is bettering itself for the abode of man. Every atom of matter must fill the measure of its creation. Man expects through the Gospel plan to become perfect even as God is perfect. Man came here upon the earth to gain a schooling that was necessary to advance him up the scale of progression. This earth was made for this express purpose, and since it has been progress ing with man thus far, why will it not progress further? Man looks forward to being resurrected and becoming an immortal being. Paul said, If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. This is true. Man's thoughts go beyond the grave, possibly to some imaginary heaven on some other planet. If this earth was made for man, why not this earth be the planet? I do not mean in the con dition it is now, but in a condition that would be fit for exaltation. If man is resurrected, why may not the earth also be regenerated and become the abode of immortals? Why should we think to live on another planet when this earth has nourished us while going through our schooling? The Savior, in speaking to the apostles of future glory said, I say unto you, ye which have followed me in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The word regeneration means to change, or a new birth. Peter also voices this same thought. When speaking to the people at Solomon's temple, he said, Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the time of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you; whom the heaven must receive until the time of the resti tution of all things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: March 15, 1906 Let me say to our young men who are here studying different branches of learning: Hunt up your friends; associate with your brethren and sisters. DO not pull away from them; do not keep yourselves aloof from them. GO to their meetings. Go to the presiding authorities and talk with them. Say to them, Here I am. If you can use me for any good, do so. If I have talent and ability to do anything you want me to do to roll on the work of the Lord and to convince the honest in heart of the truth we have received, here I am, ready to be used for the accomplishment of God's purposes whenever it is possible for me to get away from my studies. Now, boys, do this. Remem ber the Old saying, that it is not all of life to live; nor is it all of death to die. There is something more in life than the mere living - eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. Men will be held accountable before the great Judge Of the quick and the dead for the deeds done in the flesh. You cannot avoid that. You are not here by chance. You came here by the will of God, according to His design, to fulfil His purposes; and you came here without Seeking it yourself, so far as this world is concerned. You are entities; you have living souls within you; and you will be raised' from the dead just as sure as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. As sure as by Adam you die. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: August 23, 1906 I shall not attempt here a description of this great organ. I believe I tried it in some correspondence from the west several years ago, and it has been written of much. Mormonism is never, in the ignorant mind, associated with any high achievement in art, and yet, here in this desert city, these religionists, who hold and practice strange beliefs, have erected a musical monument that excels anything that Gentiles have ever done of the same kind. The big organ was erected thirty years ago, but has been modernized internally within the past few years. Standing in the west of the egg-shaped auditorium, its massive front towers loom up to a height of fifty-eight feet, while it occupies a space 30x33 feet. There are one hundred and eight stops and accessories, while within its enormous body it holds more than five thousand pipes. When you stop to think that this instrument is capable of four hundred tonal varie ties, description need go no further. To the musician, the organist, this fact is in itself overpowering. But these mechanical and structural facts can be had from the guide books. Standing before the great keyboard with its four rows of keys, its innumerable stops, its vast pedal arrangements, and the touch of its master upon it, I come into a. New comprehension of the size and wonder of the instrument. Outside, the hot sun shines down through the leafy interstices of the trees that line the broad walks. The faint chirp of the birds is borne unto me through the lowered transoms. Presently, the organist ceases to talk and turns to his keys. There is a distant rumble, our backs are to the organ, which stands twenty feet or more in the rear of the keyboard. The rumble takes on the elements of ponderous harmony that swells like the sound of the sea; into this there break the sweet flute notes of a Chopin nocturne. Against the deep thrill of the organ's sub-current the marvelous charm and sweep of the music plays, swinging into the lighter passages with a clear resonance that stirs your pulses, and' at last dies away with a quiver of exquisite melody. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: November 15, 1906 I want to say something to you about Elder Heber J. Grant, one of the Twelve Apostles, a man of brilliant mind, a man with one of the most active, energetic makeups, I believe, that I ever knew in my life. He simply cannot keep still, and it is a wonder to me how he holds out, because he spends a great deal of his nights in reading and walking about, and all that sort of thing, and sleeps only about half as much as an ordinary man ought to sleep. Yet the Lord has preserved him, and it is the duty of the Elders of this mission to hearken unto him and respect him in his position. Every one of you ought to do that. Now, another thing, when President Heber J. Grant comes to this conference or to this meeting it is his right to say to the presi dent oi the branch, I will take charge of this meeting here to-day. He does not need to be asked to do it. He can say, I will do it, or he can appoint one to take charge of the meetings. Why? Because he is the presiding officer, and it is not right to think or to entertain the thought for a moment that he cannot go into any branch or conference in this mission-and take charge whenever he wants to. It is not like a regular stake or ward in Zion. And yet it is right, when one of the apostles is sent to a stake or ward of Zion, to go and say, Here bishop, I will take charge here now. I have been sent here for such and such 'a purpose. He has a right to do it. I saw in certain places that the presiding officer did not seem to understand his position. I want to 'say that President Heber J. Grant is the presiding officer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Great Britain, and this is the position unto which he has been called, and you should always refer things to him. When he comes to this branch the president of the branch should say, Now, Brother Heber, you will please take the work into your own hands. President Grant can then do as he thinks best. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: May 3, 1906 Parents are thus made responsible, as they certainly should be, for the proper training of their children. As soon as they manifest the capacity to obtain knowledge, instruction that will lead them eternal life should be given. The introduction to the process of becoming saved is plain and simple: faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ, repentance of sins, etc. Had Joseph Smith neglected to provide ample means for the education of children, his system would have been very incomplete. Had he placed more emphasis on the study of history, language, geography, etc., than on the ele mentary conditions of obtaining divine knowledge, he would have simply followed well established precedents. Having, however, established a proper foundation, he goes on to explain that his students must be conducted into all the fields of knowledge. They are not to be so captivated with the beauty and dignity of the spiritual idea as to become impracticable. On the other hand, his system provides that the justification of the practical is found in its inestimable contributions to the ideal. His students are not to be seduced by the wealth and Splendor of the means of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: June 7, 1906 In Portland, on February 4, we baptized seven souls, and last Sunday we baptized three others. We went around the mission baptizing people every where. We made an opening in the city of Vancouver, B. C., where about eighteen people applied for baptism, whereas two years ago we could not get a hearing there at all. In the city of Spokane, in Washington, where for a time we withdrew the Elders because of the indifference manifested, the Lord has poured out His Spirit upon the people since the Elders have come back there, and His providence has been manifested until the spirit that is leading some of the people indicates that we shall reap a harvest in that town. One man who had a Latter-day Saint wife, and had prevented her from making her membership known to the Elders, lost her by death. He had in his family six children, partly grown. His wife's last request was that he would hunt up the Mormon Elders that they might perform the funeral services and preach the discourses. He hunted up two of the boys that had been in the mission but a few months. They were bashful young men, with stammering tongues, and he asked them if they would come and perform the duties of the funeral services over his wife. They were so frightened when they promised to do it that they fasted and prayed for two days, and then when they went to the funeral, their tongues were loosed, and the Spirit and power rested upon them until the hearts of the people in the congregation were melted. The husband came seeking forgiveness that he had manifested such a spirit of bitterness against the Saints, and invited his children to come with him. They became investigators of Mormonism, and the last I heard, a week ago, they had given in their names for baptism. A lady twelve miles out of that city, whose husband we have baptized, sent him to find the Elders, as she had discovered something with which she could overturn Mormonism, and she wanted first to show the Elders the error of their ways, and then she intended to go about and influence the neighborhood against the work that the Elders had been doing. When they had engaged in conversation about four hours, her oldest son arose and said, Mother, instead of your proving that Mormonism is wrong, by your conversation you have proved to my brother and I that it is divine, and if the water is not too cold for Elder Holliday, he can baptize me to-morrow morning. Elder Holliday led the young man into the water the next day, and confirmed him a member of the Church in the presence of his mother. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: July 17, 1918 There is a beautiful legend of a golden organ in an ancient monastery. Once the monastery was besieged by robbers who desired to carry off its treasures. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: August 30, 1906 I sincerely hope that the children will love their parents, hearken to their counsel, honor their fathers and their mothers that their days may be long in the land which the Lord their God shall give to them. It is destined by the wisdom of the Lord and His Gospel principles that fathers and mothers shall live pure lives together, that their children may be united with them, and that the affections that exist between them may reach to the grave and to the world to come. The Lord has planted in the human heart one of His own attributes, which is immortal love. We Shall never forget our fathers who have passed behind the veil, nor our mothers, nor our children. The love that we feel for them is not a love that pertains to this world alone, but it is des tined to bloom more freely in the world to come. Then let us exercise that love and charity that forgiveth, and that will bring to us the affection of those with whom we are associated, that we may be united in the bond of that greatest law of God - to love God with all our hearts, and like unto it, our neighbor as ourselves. These young Elders have come out here to preach the Gospel. They have left comfortable homes and fathers and mothers; some of them have wives and children, and what have they in view? What object have they? Simply to carry the message to the world that the Lord has Spoken from the heavens again in our own days; that God has restored His Holy Priesthood, which is the authority of God delegated to man by which man can act in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and administer in all the ordinances of the Gospel acceptably to the Lord. It is not the design or mission of these Elders to tear down your beliefs, to make any kind of assault upon you; but it is their business to come to you and show you the greater light, that your eyes may be opened, that your ears may be unstopped, that your hearts may be touched with a love for the truth, that if you have been guilty of wrongdoing you may forsake it and turn unto the Lord, learn of His ways and walk in His paths. It is against the principles of our Church to try to persuade a husband to forsake his family or to slacken his love or care for them, but it is the law of the Church to induce men to be more true and faithful to their wives and to their families. It is not their purpose to per suade women to leave their husbands or families for the Gospel's sake. They have not come here to sow discord among you or to cause differences or co'n tentions, but simply to preach the plain teachings of life and truth and leave the results in your hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: January 4, 1906 One striking evidence of the faith of the Saints is their fidelity in the pay ment of tithes, in their offerings for the poor, in the erection of substantial and elegant houses of worship, in the maintenance of missions, and the sup port given generally to all measures for the spread of the work of the Lord. Our people are gradually following the advice given to get out of debt. It is confidently hoped that the Church itself will, before long, be free from the bonded indebtedness which has been a burden upon it for some time. It will be glad tidings to us all, if by the next Christmas day we can declare, truth fully, that we owe no man anything, but to love one another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: November 8, 1906 Prophet Joseph Smith, they have asked and they have received; they have knocked and the door has been opened unto them; they have sought and they have found. The words of the prophet were bold. They were not as the words of the scribes and Pharisees. They were the words of a prophet of God, of an inspired man or boy, because he was but a boy at that time. And therefore he was hold to speak God's words, knowing that the Lord God Almighty who inspired him was able to fulfill. And so I might go on. In almost every revelation that was given by the Prophet Joseph Smith in those days, there were promises made, and those promises were not based upon what might appear to be reasonable, or something that seemed to be in reach, or would come to pass eventually, but they were based on the knowledge that he possessed and that was given to him by inspiration. At another time, after the organization of the Church, Joseph Smith declared that before the great and dreadful day of the Lord should come, Zion should flourish in the tops of the mountains. Why, the Saints at that time lived down on the flats on the western borders of New York, in a flat country in Ohio, and on the plains and prairies of Illinois, and they did not know any thing about mountains. Joseph Smith had never seen a mountain, but yet he declared, and it is recorded, that before the great and dreadful day of the Lord, Zion should flourish in the tops of the mountains. N ow, it was a great many years before the Saints gathered to the tops of the mountains. But they are there to-day in the tops of the mountains, on the very backbone of the continent of America, where the waters flow on one side to the Pacific and on the other side to the Atlantic, and there they are growing and flourishing. This is a fulfillment of the Prophet's prediction. In 1832 Joseph Smith penned the following: Verily, thus saith the Lord, concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls. (and, mark you, this was penned in 1831, many years before the war.) The days will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at that place; for behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and thus war shall be poured out upon all nations. And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshalled and disciplined for war: and it shall come to pass also, that the remnants who are left of the land will marshall themselves, and shall become exceeding angry, and shall vex the Gentiles (that means the Lamanites) with a sore vexation and thus, with the sword, and by bloodshed, the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquakes, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation and chastening hand of an Al mighty God, until the consumption decreed, hath made a full end of all nations; that the cry of the saints, and of the blood of the saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies. Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold it cometh quickly, saith the Lord.
