Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: October 16, 1902 This shows that endless, eternal, everlasting and similar terms indicate the hind not the duration of punishment. As God IS eternal, so are His laws and their appropriate rewards and punishments. They ever exist to inspire righteousness and correct evil, to bless the faithful and inflict retribution upon the disobedient. Under this everlasting code individuals will be rewarded or punished according to deeds done in the body. Thus the justice of God is vindicated and a foundation is laid for the larger hope that the Latter-day Saints have so long advocated, and that is now so rapidly gaining favor among Christian people. The Savior taught that the unfaithful and disobedient would be beaten with many stripes, while those less blameworthy would receive few stripes (luke xii: 47 St. Paul says God will render to every man according to his deeds (rom. Ii: St. John adds his testimony to the same effect (rev. Xx': 12, So do Jeremiah (chaps. Xvii: 10; xxxii: 19) and others. If these passages mean anything, they mean that every man will receive absolute justice; no more, no less. Each disobedient soul must pay the uttermost farthing, but when the debt has been discharged and punishment commensurate with the transgression has been inflicted, the eternal law will have no further, claim upon that soul, purged now from sin. Justice as well as mercy would be outraged if the punishment were continued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: December 18, 1902 Joseph Smith was born at a new epoch of the world's history. The United States was but a plucky fledgling, healthy, vigorous, and ardent in hope. A new nation had just been established, a nation that declared for the first time in the world's history, religious liberty for all. Man had learned to res peot himself as man. Old World ideas were of no use in a land where the soil was new, and where nature was inviting the best that was in human nature. A big, broad country was to produce in time a big, broad people, and before many years the world was to have a great many things that men had never dreamed of before. The age of invention was about to dawn, and the hardy pioneer was forcing his way into the wilds of the far west. The ax and the pick, the plow and the horse were his best friends, and with these he was laying a wonderful foundation for future generations. The fundamental law of American life, the law that in time is to judge all religions and all men was fast being developed. With the new age, with the new people came a renewal of the Gospel of Christ. Its progress has only been in keeping with the pro gress of the age. Download or read book The Latter Day Saints Millennial Star Vol 64 written by Latter-Day Saints' Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: July 3, 1902 A mere assent on our part to the divinity of the Redeemer is certainly not the faith that Christ taught. It was something more than mere assent or acknowledgement alone - it was distinctively active in its nature; He taught us that if we believe on Him we shall do the works that He did - yea, even greater works than He did. During the few years of the Lord's life, inactivity never played a part. His whole life was work personified. His faith, know ledge, power and love were proved by works, and His command to us is that we follow in His footsteps. Paul wrote to the Church at Rome, and the keynote of his letter was that the just shall live by faith. But he meant not that acknowledgement or assent alone, which is sometimes called by the name of faith he meant the real, living power, the assurance that leads us in a godly life of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the kingdom of heaven. This living faith in the Lord Jesus, which makes us happy and secures us everlasting life, is the power most lacking in the world to-day. One great reason is that the people of the world generally do not or will not, believe in and acknowledge revelation, that divine channel through which faith is nourished and developed. Few people believe that such a thing is necessary in this advanced age of education and culture, but the relationship between faith and revelation is very close. They go hand in hand and one is not enjoyed without the other. Paul tells us in his epistle to the Romans, tenth chapter, How then shall they call on him in whom they have not belie ved'! And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? We might ask further - How shall they be sent except they be called? And how shall they be called except God reveal whom He has chosen? When the Savior was here, He told us that He was sent of His Father. He called His workers to Him, divinely authorized them and sent them into the world saying - Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, and ye have not chosen me but I have chosen you and ordained you. During the Lord's personal ministry He was commissioned to organize the kingdom and do the work, but He promised that the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, should be sent at His departure from the earth. This Spirit should bring to the remembrance of the disciples all that the Savior had taught them, reveal to them the future and teach them the mysteries of the kingdom. This Holy Spirit was promised to all who will believe, repent and be baptized for the remission of their sins. (acts 2. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: June 19, 1902 It stands to reason that one who labors under these high convictions will be much more likely to achieve success than one into whose life's labor no such inspiring thoughts enter, and what is true of the individual in this case will be found to be true of a community. Moreover, under the foregoing ideas which have taken possession of him, the Mormon will submit to a severer self - discipline than will a man in whose life no such ideas are present. He is far advanced in the spirit of the ruling principle one sees in the life of Christ, and which is represented in the words, Father, not my will, but thine be done. He is prepared to act with his fellows in the interest of the community, even at the sacrifice of what may be personal to him. There is bound to be in the aggregation of such units a strong community sentiment, resulting in mutual helpfulness that can scarcely fail to make them successful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: January 9, 1902 The Prophet's ancestors for several generations were native Americans. The humble town of Sharon, Windsor county, Vermont, witnessed his birth. There, on the 23rd day of December, 1805, came be into the world. He was but ten years Old when his parents - honest farm folk in lowly circumstances - moved with their family of seven sons and three daughters, Joseph being the fourth child, into the back-woods Of western New York; and it was in that then modest and retired corner of the world - a world that now rings with his fame, told by both good and evil tongues - that the curtain arose upon the great drama Of the latter days. When about mid-way between fourteen and fifteen years Of age, he received his first miraculous manifestation - that glorious and unspeakable appearing of the Father and the Son, which has been for so many years the theme of so many tongues and pens, of so much comment, favorable and unfavorable; to the Gentiles foolishness, and to some Latter-day Saints, skeptically inclined, a stumbling stone. It was a period of great religious excitement in the neighborhood of Joseph's home, the little village of Manchester. Revivals were ln progress, camp meetings were being held by ministers of various denominations, and it was to sol a question in his mind as to which of all the Christian churches was the true Church of Christ, that he went one spring morning into the woods near his father's home, to ask for wisdom, for spiritual light and guid ance, Of that God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, as testified James the Apostle.
