Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin Grammar Pharmacy and Medicine The present edition of the Latin Grammar of Pharmacy and Medicine retains the essential features of the three earlier ones. Some changes and some additions have been shown to be advisable by the experience of the classroom and by the suggestions of reviewers and teachers. Many exercises have been shortened or simplified, some have been omitted; all have been carefully reviewed and any forms or constructions for which the previous lessons have not prepared the student have been removed. All words lacking in the vocabulary have been supplied. The statements of some of the principles of syntax have been altered, the chapters on the subjunctive have received special attention. In accordance with the expressed wish of some pharmacists and physicians, the English method of the pronunciation of Latin has been explained. All long vowels are marked; the mark of short vowels has been omitted except in rare instances. Professor L. E. Sayre, whose name has been connected with this book from the first, has contributed a chapter on Prescription Writing and one on Chemical Terms, and a List of Pharmaceutical and Medical Terms with their Definitions. Many additional prescriptions have been distributed through the earlier lessons and several have been added before the Reading Lessons in the latter part of the book. For these, also, thanks are due to Professor Sayre. It is believed that these new features will increase the value and effectiveness of the book; and it is recommended that words from the list of pharmaceutical and medical terms be assigned early in the course as a part of each lesson until all are learned.
