Book Late Neogene Chronostratigraphy Biostratigraphy Biochronology and Paleoclimatology

Download or read book Late Neogene Chronostratigraphy Biostratigraphy Biochronology and Paleoclimatology written by William A. Berggren and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of modern paleomagnetic, radiometric, and biostratigraphic studies has provided an accurate geochronological framework for the past 10 million years--the Late Neogene. Marine zones based on calcareous and siliceous planktonic organisms are recognized from the sub-Arctic region to the sub-Antarctic and their correlation to the paleomagnetic time scale is now feasible in some detail for the past 5 my. Likewise, the relationship of geochemically calibrated mammalian biochronology to the marine succession has been greatly improved. Within this framework of time it is possible to delineate the history of major features in Late Neogene paleontology, climatology, and oceanography. (Author).

Book The Late Cenozoic of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

Download or read book The Late Cenozoic of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego written by J. Rabassa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by highly qualified Argentine scientists and scholars, this book focuses on the uninterrupted geological and paleontological record of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego since the Miocene-Pliocene boundary to the arrival of man and modern times. This region is an outstanding area for research, with significant interest at the international level. It provides an updated overview of the scientific work in all related fields with a strong paleoclimatic approach. Patagonia has also been a sort of a "paleoclimatic bridge" between the Antarctic Peninsula and the more northerly land masses, since the final opening of the Drake Passage in the middle Miocene. Timely and comprehensive, The Late Cenozoic of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego is the only monograph book written in English. * One-stop resource for paleontological information of the Late Cenozoic of Patagonia * Covers 5 million years in the uninterrupted history of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego * Comprehensive coverage of the region written by highly qualified Argentine scientists and scholars

Book Geological Evolution of the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book Geological Evolution of the Mediterranean Basin written by Daniel J. Stanley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Sea, nestled between Africa, southern Europe, and the Middle East, may be envisioned as a complex picture-puzzle comprising numerous intricate pieces, many of which are already in place. A general image, in terms of science, has emerged, although at this time large gaps are noted and some areas of the picture remain fuzzy and indistinct. In recent years this fascinating, mind-teasing puzzle image has become clearer with individual pieces more easily recognized and rapidly emplaced, largely by means of multidisciplinary and multinational team efforts. In this respect, the Special Program Panel on Marine Sciences of the NATO Scientific Af fairs Division considered the merits of initiating four conferences bearing on the Mediterranean ecosystem. It was suggested that the first, emphasizing geology, should dovetail with subsequent seminars on physical oceanogra phy, marine biology, and ecology and man's influence on the natural Medi terranean regime. At a conference held in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, in August 1979, Profes sor Raimondo Selli was urged by some panel members to initiate an Ad vanced Research Institute (ARI) that would focus primarily on the geologi cally recent evolution of the Mediterranean Sea and serve as a logical base for future NATO conferences on the Mediterranean.

Book Encyclopedia of Paleoclimatology and Ancient Environments

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Paleoclimatology and Ancient Environments written by Vivien Gornitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Springer’s Major Reference Works, this book gives the reader a truly global perspective. It is the first major reference work in its field. Paleoclimate topics covered in the encyclopedia give the reader the capability to place the observations of recent global warming in the context of longer-term natural climate fluctuations. Significant elements of the encyclopedia include recent developments in paleoclimate modeling, paleo-ocean circulation, as well as the influence of geological processes and biological feedbacks on global climate change. The encyclopedia gives the reader an entry point into the literature on these and many other groundbreaking topics.

Book European Neogene Mammal Chronology

Download or read book European Neogene Mammal Chronology written by Everett H. Lindsay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last ZO years great progress has been achieved in our understanding of both earth history and vertebrate evolution. The result is that climatic/tectonic events in earth history can now be placed in a more precise and global time frame, that permit their evaluation as abiotic causal factors which might trigger extinction and dispersal events in vertebrate history. Great strides have also been made in genetics and cell biology, providing new insight into phylogenetic relationships among many vertebrates. These new data, along with data on chronologie resolution of earth history, provide tests of previous interpretations regarding ancestral-descendant relationships based solely on the fossil record. It is fitting and proper that a volume on European Neogene mammal chronology is produced at this time, to ensure that new interpretations of vertebrate evolution and chronology are based on the most accurate and current data. Vertebrate paleon tologists believe that the fossil record is the only secure data for measuring the actual course and tempo of vertebrate evolution. Knowledge of the fossil record must keep pace with advances in other areas of science so that inferences on vertebrate evolu tion are accurate and meaningful.

Book Neogene Paleontology of the Manonga Valley Tanzania

Download or read book Neogene Paleontology of the Manonga Valley Tanzania written by Terry Harrison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-05-31 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to this volume detail paleontologic research in Manonga Valley, and shed important light on the evolutionary development of eastern Africa. Chapters provide novel insights into the taxonomy, paleobiology, ecology, and zoogeographic relationships of African faunas, as well as lay the foundation for future geological, paleontological, and paleoecological studies in this important area. The book concludes with a discussion of the importance of investigations on broader geographical sites, including the Manonga Valley, for human evolution research. The text is supported by 143 illustrations.
