Book The Last Queen of the Gypsies

Download or read book The Last Queen of the Gypsies written by William Cobb and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Cobb's first novel in nine years is a brilliant, quirky, highly readable story as compelling as it is original. Its main characters journey on parallel quests: Lester Ray, a fourteen-year-old boy who was deserted by his mother when he was a baby and has now escaped his abusive alcoholic father, and Minnie, a woman who was abandoned by her Gypsy family of migrant fruit pickers when she was eleven. The novel interweaves their searches for families they never really knew. It ranges from the Great Depression to the mid-1960s, and from the panhandle of Florida, where much of the novel is set, to New York City during World War II, to the Georgia and Carolina coasts, to Fort Myers and south Florida. Lester Ray finds work with a carnival as he looks for his mother, accompanied by all the odd and strange and wonderful people who make up that world. Minnie moves from the dry sandy heat of central Florida in 1933, to a brothel in Cedar Key, to New York, to the little town of Piper, to the winter camps of the Gypsies near Fort Myers. She is--first as a girl, then as a woman--a person of immense fortitude and strength, as engaging and unforgettable as Scarlett O'Hara.

In their world, cowgirls are heroes, road trips last forever, and junk is treasured. Beginning with a little bit of faith and a whole lot of heart and soul, the sisters travelled the back roads of America like gypsies, collecting roadside trinkets and tattered treasures while meeting kindred spirits and lively characters along the way. With a mix of hippie, rock n’ roll, southern charm, and big dreams, these small-town Texas girls became restless wanderers and owners and operators of their dream business and bohemian brand, Junk Gypsy. Filled with stories from their unique journey as well as DIY projects and bohemian inspired designs, Junk Gypsy is a tribute to all the rowdy gypsies, crafty junkers, free-spirited romantics, and true-blue rebels who have ever dared to dream big.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along the way, readers relish his first experiences of love and success as a writer, leading to a career as a professor of writing at Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo) in 1963. From there Cobb's struggles with alcohol and depression lead to elongated years of tumbling creative output and the collapse of his marriage. The summer of 1984 found Cobb in rehab, the first step in his path to recovery. His unflinching memoir narrates both the milestones and telling details of his intense therapy and years in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). In the sober thirty years since, Cobb has published a string of critically praised novels and a prize-winning collection of short stories. The capstone of his comeback was winning the Harper Lee Award in 2007 for distinguished fiction writing. In 2000, shortly after retiring, Cobb developed NPH, which upset his sense of balance and triggered dementia symptoms and other maladies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there was a gypsy queen who wore on her wrist a chain of six lucky charms – a golden crown, a silver horse, a butterfly caught in amber, a cat's eye shell, a bolt of lightning forged from the heart of a falling star, and the flower of the rue plant, herb of grace. The queen gave each of her six children one of the charms as their lucky talisman, but ever since the chain of charms was broken, the gypsies had been dogged with misfortune. It is even worse for the Finch tribe – they have been thrown into gaol with only three weeks to live. The only members of the family to escape are thirteen-year-old Emilia and her cousin Luka, who have been entrusted to find the six charms and bring them together again. What Emilia and Luka do not realise is that there is a price to be paid for each lucky charm, and that the cost may prove too high... Book 1: The Gypsy Crown: 9th August – 12th August 1658 Maggie has given them the first charm – an old gold coin – but Luka and Emilia must escape the brutal thief-taker, Coldham. With a horse, a monkey, a dog, and a huge brown bear in their train, it is hard to travel secretly as they flee across the Surrey countryside. With a little bit of luck – or, as Emilia believes, magic – they manage to escape, but Coldham will not give up so easily.

The two gods are taken out of the realm while they were still toddlers to protect them from evil forces that had invaded Orixa. Tempo, god of time, and Exu, god of fire, were tasked with the mission to take the two toddlers to another dimension. With Tempo’s power weakened, Exu shoulders the responsibility of handing over the two young gods, Ogun and Oxossi, into the care of the Gypsy queen. Disclosing the situation and their identity, he requests that she nurtures and trains the two gods for twenty years as her sons, after which he would return to take them back to the valley of Orixa. The two young gods grow strong and powerful under the training and loving guidance of the gypsy queen and her tribe. Still, their true identities remain unknown until they decide to set out for new adventures outside the land of gypsies with three hundred soldiers at their command. During their journey, they encounter many difficulties: vanquishing predators that escaped from the magical realm, saving cities, training and exploring the depth of their magical powers, experiencing different supernatural beings, and tasting victories and defeat. A time came when their true identity was revealed. The seal that bound a hoard of magical evil creatures beneath the ocean of Orixa has broken, evil is unleashed, and Orixa is on the verge of destruction. They locate their brother, Exu, and meet a demigod named Olufe, who joins them on their mission. The four set out in search of Tempo, their elder brother. It is time to return home. The gods realize they have a greater mission; a battle unlike no other has begun. They can’t win with just their powers; they have to stay pure, void of malice, courageous and alert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the centuries, Gypsies all over the world have been misunderstood, maligned, rejected. Outcasts of the countries in which they live, they have wandered for centuries over the face of the earth. They have no homeland, no political unity, no recognition among nations. They have been alone, sundered, shunned, persecuted and banished. Until about a century ago, their original home had been a matter of dispute. Their language had been a source of puzzlement. Yet their conduct and their traditions, their feeling for music, dance and song, have all been acclaimed. Still they were not accepted and were forced to remain apart from conventional society. Here is their epic history, with its folktales and beliefs, its rites and customs. Here is the vast treasury of the Gypsies.
