Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s 2070, and the post-Collapse world is staggering toward another, perhaps final, destruction. Blanco, is a reluctant member of Mister Splinter’s Magnifico Cirque de Curiosities. Travelling through dangerous lands, this heavily-armed band of freaks and circus performers survive by conning and killing, robbing and running – and putting on a show. But simple survival is not their real purpose. Their leader, seen only by his ‘doctors’, enforces brutal rule, and none are more harshly treated than Blanco, who becomes aware the circus is much more than it seems. Worse, something is growing inside him, something that is changing and killing him. From the ruins of London, across Europe and Asia Minor to the remote Tien Shan mountains, Blanco and the circus fight toward a final showdown, for Blanco’s last chance of survival - and perhaps even for the entire human species. A page-turning spec-fic thriller and wild ride through the near future.

Download or read book Last Night I Dreamed a Circus written by Maya Gottfried and published by Knopf Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many children dream of going to the circus, but our narrator dreams herself right into the act. She is the graceful horseback rider and the clown. The daring trapeze artist and the dancing dog. The contortionist and the roaring lion. These stars of the circus are depicted in splendid, dramatic portraits by noted watercolorist Robert Rahway Zakanitch. Each vividly colored performer is set against a black background that invokes both a life in the spotlight and the focused landscape of dreams. Poetic and spare, the text invites readers to extend the story in their own imaginations-in their own circus dreams.

Download or read book Saving Anne the Elephant The True Story of the Last British Circus Elephant written by Claire Ellicott and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When shocking images emerged of Anne, Britain’s last circus elephant, being beaten by one of her keepers, it sparked a national outcry. Undercover footage showed the gentle creature cowering in fear as the youth repeatedly inflicted violent attacks on her, making her wince in pain. The public was appalled and demanded that Anne be freed from the circus where she had spent nearly fifty-five years performing and be allowed to live out her final years in peace. I, a reporter at the Daily Mail, broke the story after the campaign group Animal Defenders International passed the newspaper the footage they had secretly shot. From then on, the paper, animal charities and experts worked tirelessly behind the scenes to save Anne and deliver her to safety. But there were fears for her health due to her crippling arthritis and old age and at one stage it was thought that she might have to be put down to ease her suffering. Thankfully the vets decided that they could treat her and she officially retired in 2011. It was agreed that Longleat Safari Park would be her new home and she settled in nicely. Meanwhile, her keeper is believed to have fled to his native Romania and her owner Bobby Roberts was prosecuted for animal cruelty the following year. The Daily Mail ran a funding appeal to build her a refuge at the park specifically designed for her needs and she moved in to Anne’s Haven a year ago. Since she was rescued, she has gone from strength to strength and the arthritis which caused her to drag her back legs has dramatically improved. Having recovered her mobility, she is able to play and go for walks with new-found energy. Now, at last, she has the chance to live out her final years in a happy and safe place.

Book excerpt: As an internationally acclaimed fashion photographer Hanspeter Schneider's professional life focuses on the artifice of beauty, so it's natural for him to challenge surface assumptions about model humans. For this collection he has chronicled an American community of travelling circus performers and found himself charmed and enlightened. His empathy with his old and often unusual subjects shines through the portraits as the circus folk present themselves to the camera as open books of humour, dignity and vivacity.

Download or read book Kirby s Last Circus written by Ross H. Spencer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-05-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “From the author of The Missing Bishop and Monastery Nightmare comes one of the most memorable heroes since the eponymous protagonist of Fletch. Birch Kirby is a middle-aged private eye with a penchant for drinking too much, singing Irish barroom songs, and befriending $25-a-night ladies-of-the-night. He is not exactly the smoothest private eye in Chicago. But the CIA has noticed Kirby. They like his style. Nobody can be as genuinely inept as Kirby pretends to be, and they need someone with his imagination. After all, strange things are going on in the town of Grizzly Gulch, Illinois. The KGB keeps transmitting secret messages that, when decoded, read “SAMD+23.” The CIA has been scratching their heads over that one, but they expect Kirby to break the case. Three months behind in his rent, Kirby answers the call of duty and goes into deep cover as the bullpen catcher for the Grizzly Gulch No Sox, only to end up fighting off the No Sox’s nymphomaniacal owner, Matilda Richwell, instead of the KGB. But through bumbles and accidents that would make Chevy Chase blush, Birch Kirby learns the meaning of SAMD+23. The struggle to save the world from ultimate catastrophe becomes the dramatic mainspring of this crisply written, crackingly entertaining novel of high jinks and serious conniving.”

Download or read book Clicko written by Neil Parsons and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1920s and ’30s, Franz Taibosh—whose stage name was Clicko—performed in front of millions as one of the stars of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Prior to his fame in the United States, Taibosh toured the world as the “Wild Dancing Bushman,” showing off his frenzied dance moves in freak shows, sideshows, and music halls from Australia to Cuba. When he died in 1940, the New York Times called him “the only African bushman ever exhibited in this country.” In Clicko, Neil Parsons unearths the untold story of Taibosh’s journey from boyhood on a small farm in South Africa to top billing as one of the travelling World’s Fair Freaks. Through Taibosh’s tale, Parsons brings to life the bizarre golden age of entertainment as well as the role that the dubious new science of race played in it. Beginning with Taibosh’s early life, Clicko untangles the real story of his ancestry from the web of myths spun around him on his rise to international stardom. Parsons then chronicles the unhappy middle period of Taibosh’s career, when he suffered under the heel of a vicious manager. Left to freeze and nearly starve in an unheated apartment, Taibosh was rescued by Frank Cook, Barnum & Bailey’s lawyer. The Cooks adopted Taibosh as a member of their family of circus managers and performers, and his happy—if far from average—years with them make up the final chapter of this remarkable story. Equal parts entertaining and disturbing, Clicko vividly evokes a forgotten era when vaudeville drew massive crowds and circus freaks were featured in Billboard and Variety. Parsons introduces us to colorful characters such as George Auger the giant and the original Zip the Pinhead, but above all, he gives us an unforgettable portrait of Franz Taibosh, rescued at last from the racists and the romantics and revealed here as an ordinary man with an extraordinary life.
