Today, students no longer start to learn English in grade five, but begin with the very basics in primary school. In most states, English as a foreign language is introduced in grade three – some states have gone even further and start teaching English in the first grade, e.g. North Rhine- Westphalia. Besides these changes, a major shift from a ‘teacher-’ to a ‘learner- centered’ classroom took place. Consequently, the individual learner and his or her language learning process have become more important in the English foreign language (EFL) classroom than before. New methodology such as strategic learning, reflection, and self-evaluation have moved to the center of attention in order to enhance students’ language learning efficiency. In order to approach these new competences in an appropriate way for children, the language portfolio was developed and introduced to foreign language learners. By now, there are a number of different portfolio, such as the European Language Portfolio for language learners in secondary schools and adults, or Mein Sprachenportfolio, which is being used in primary schools in the state of Hesse. Those new methods of language learning are meant to offer students the chance to monitor their own language learning process and eventually allow them to see their own learning progress over the years. One of the major goals of the portfolio is to rise learners’ motivation and interest in language learning. Research over many years has shown that motivation plays a great role when it comes to foreign language learning and learning in general. Therefore, it is certain that motivation has significant influence on a person’s success or failure in language learning. The portfolio might be the key to the problem of creating, fostering, and maintaining language learners’ motivation over a period of time that exceeds childhood and adolescence.

It will be started with communicative language teaching (CLT) as a precursor to TBLT. The theoretical context will be discussed with particular reference to Stephen Krashens’ Affective Filter Hypothesis as it has influenced research on motivation in foreign language learning as well as TBLT. After that, the current paradigms of CLT will be presented, focusing on its changes compared to former language teaching methods. Moreover, the terminology of motivation will be addressed by first providing a clear definition and then going on to discuss motivation in foreign language teaching. Although there are countless theories in this particular field, the most important theory for the course of this thesis is the Self-Determination Theory by Ryan and Deci as it first introduced the concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Besides, the teacher and learner roles will be discussed to see how they affect each other’s motivation. Furthermore, Dörnyei’s motivational strategies for the foreign language classroom will be outlined to show how student motivation can be initiated and maintained. The next chapter introduces the task-based language teaching approach thoroughly explaining the concept of a task in order to grasp its main ideas and differences compared to an exercise. Then the various task types and the role of teacher and learner will be explored to see how they operate in the EFL classroom. Thereafter, Jane Willis’ TBL framework will be presented by discussing the aim of each stage in detail. Lastly, a sample lesson designed by Jane Willis will be presented to demonstrate the implementation of TBLT and to scrutinize its impact on student motivation. Therefore, the previously mentioned aspects of motivation will be taken up to examine how they are integrated in TBLT focusing especially on intrinsically motivating factors.

Drawing on Deci and Ryan's (1985) Self-Determination Theory (SDT), I sought to investigate and describe L2 learner autonomy and how an educational intervention influences it. The SDT conceptualizing human motivation for learning as existing on a continuum from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation provides ways of measuring learner autonomy and a rationale for educational interventions for developing it. First, Japanese adult EFL learners' characteristics were described in terms of learner autonomy-related psychological constructs (motivation, affect, and strategy use) according to levels of learner autonomy based on SDT. Second, the adapted VSS yielded significant effects on the participants' vocabulary learning and L2 learning anxiety (for the high and low autonomous motivation groups) and social strategy use (for the low autonomous motivation group). Third, the implementation of the adapted VSS into the adult L2 English classes was considered in terms of the development of linguistic and autonomous forms of learning quoting from the participants' quantitative and qualitative responses for this approach.
