Download or read book The Butte Irish written by David M. Emmons and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, David Emmons tells the story of Butte's large and assertive population of Irish immigrants. He traces their backgrounds in Ireland, the building of an ethnic community in Butte, the nature and hazards of their work in the copper mines, and the complex interplay between Irish nationalism and worker consciousness. From a treasure trove of "Irish stuff," the reports, minutes, and correspondence of the major Irish-American organizations in Butte, Emmons shows how the stalwart supporters of the RELA and the Ancient Order of Hiberians marched and drilled for Irish freedom---and how, as they ran the town, the miners' union, and the largest mining companies, they used this tradition of ethnic cooperation to ensure safe and steady work, Irish mines taking care of Irish miners. Butte was new, overwhelmingly Irish, and extraordinarily dangerous---the ideal place to test the seam between class and ethnicity.

Download or read book Irish Drama and the Other Revolutions written by Susan Cannon Harris and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first modern Irish playwrights emerged in London in the 1890s, at the intersection of a rising international socialist movement and a new campaign for gender equality and sexual freedom. Irish Drama and the Other Revolutions shows how Irish playwrights mediated between the sexual and the socialist revolutions, and traces their impact on left theatre in Europe and America from the 1890s to the 1960s. Drawing on original archival research, the study reconstructs the engagement of Yeats, Shaw, Wilde, Synge, O'Casey, and Beckett with socialists and sexual radicals like Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Morris, Edward Carpenter, Florence Farr, Bertolt Brecht, and Lorraine Hansberry.
Download or read book Squatter s Republic written by Tamara Venit Shelton and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who should have the right to own land, and how much of it? A Squatter's Republic follows the rise and fall of the land question in the Gilded AgeÑand the rise and fall of a particularly nineteenth-century vision of landed independence. More specifically, the author considers the land question through the anti-monopolist reform movements it inspired in late nineteenth-century California. The Golden State was a squatter's republicÑa society of white men who claimed no more land than they could use, and who promised to uphold agrarian republican ideals and resist monopoly, the nemesis of democracy. Their opposition to land monopoly became entwined with public discourse on Mexican land rights, industrial labor relations, immigration from China, and the rise of railroad and other corporate monopolies.

Download or read book The 1865 Rathcore evictions written by CE. Rayfus and published by CE. Rayfus. This book was released on 2014-06-08 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book centres on a mass family clearance of thirteen families from their homesteads in Rathcore, a small rural village situated in south county Meath. The circumstances surrounding those evictions bore all the hallmarks of extremely poor landlord-tenant relations. Central to an understanding of the period was a drastic fall in tillage farming practices throughout Ireland, and the corresponding expansion of livestock/grassland farming, particularly so, in the provinces of Munster and Leinster. This shift in agricultural land-use had serious implications for social structure all across post-famine Ireland. The 1865 Rathcore evictions aims to provide an insight into the whole complex nature of the landlord-tenant relationship in Rathcore, set to a backdrop and a period in time in which a trend facilitated by an expansion of land under grass was well under-way in County Meath from the mid-nineteenth century.
