This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of the Pink Pearl, or Recollections of Life in the Bahamas Again, Mr. Salmon, whose acquaintance I have had the honour of making during the progress of this work, tells me that until he met me, the idea of including the Bahamas in any scheme of West Indian Confederation never entered his head. As my friend says, they are as little known in the West Indies as an Irish village, whilst in the mother country their name is never heard outside the walls of the Colonial Office, unless it be among the supporters of the or the Wesleyan and Baptist Missions. But many an interesting story has been told of an Irish village, and it may be my readers will find interest in my story of this obscure corner of her Majesty's dominions, which may well be termed the outpost of the New World, seeing that it was one of the Bahama Islands that Columbus first sighted. The present moment is not inopportune to write on West Indian matters, as Mr. Fronde has of late turned the attention of the English reading public in that direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Empire on Trial is the first book to explore the issue of interracial homicide in the British Empire during its height – examining these incidents and the prosecution of such cases in each of seven colonies scattered throughout the world. It uncovers and analyzes the tensions of empire that underlay British rule and delves into how the problem of maintaining a liberal empire manifested itself in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work demonstrates the importance of the processes of criminal justice to the history of the empire and the advantage of a trans-territorial approach to understanding the complexities and nuances of its workings. An Empire on Trial is of interest to those concerned with race, empire, or criminal justice, and to historians of modern Britain or of colonial Australia, India, Kenya, or the Caribbean. Political and post-colonial theorists writing on liberalism and empire, or race and empire, will also find this book invaluable.

Book Oceans Past

Download or read book Oceans Past written by Poul Holm and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [A] fascinating volume, which establishes marine environmental history as a major new discipline for academics as well as an exciting way to bring history and the natural world alive for the public.ANDREW A. ROSENBERG, UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIREThe HMAP project is to be congratulated on this book, which presents vivid, evidence-based reconstructions of historical fisheries and the prolific ecosystems in which they were embedded.TONY J. PITCHER, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIAThe ingenuity and scholarship of the authors allow us to see ... how human societies have depended on and influenced marine living resources from periwinkles to whales.MIKE SINCLAIR, BEDFORD INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHYThis book exalts the surprisingly fruitful marriage of historians and marine scientists - a union that has proven to be one of the most exciting developments in ocean research in recent years.KATHERINE RICHARDSON, UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGENFor centuries the seas appeared to offer limitless supplies of food and other resources, their waters a cornucopia never to be exhausted. In more recent times, episodes such as the extreme exploitation and subsequent collapse of cod populations of the Grand Banks off Newfoundland have highlighted the fallaciousness of this view. Yet all too often the lessons from our historical interactions with marine animals are little known, let alone learned.Based on research for the History of Marine Animal Populations project, Oceans Past examines the complex relationship our forebears had with the sea and the animals that inhabit it. It presents eleven studies ranging from fisheries and invasive species to offshore technology and the study of marine environmental history, bringing together the perspectives of historians and marine scientists to enhance understanding of ocean management of the past, present and future. In doing so, it also highlights the influence that changes in marine ecosystems have upon the politics, welfare and culture of human societies.

Download or read book New Negroes from Africa written by Rosanne Marion Adderley and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1838, the British government outlawed the slave trade, emancipated all of the slaves in its possessions, and began to interdict slave ships en route to the Americas. Almost at once, colonies that had depended on slave labour were faced with a liberated and unwilling labour force. At the same time, newly freed slaves in Sierra Leone (and later from America and elsewhere) were "persuaded" to emigrate to other British colonies to provide a new workforce to replace or augment remnants of the old. Some became paid labourers, others indentured servants. These two groups - one, English-speaking colonists; the other, new African immigrants - are the focus of this study of "receptive" communities in the West Indies. Adderley describes the formation of these settlements, and, working from scant records, tries to tease out information about the families of liberated Africans, the labour they performed, their religions, and the culture they brought with them. She addresses issues of gender, ethnicity, and identity, and concludes with a discussion of repatriation.
