Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters collected in this volume preserve the vivid and thoughtful impressions of a young man who came to western Canada in the early twentieth century. J. Burgon Bickersteth joined the Anglican mission in Edmonton a year after its establishment in 1910. As a lay missionary he travelled in the country northwest of Edmonton for two years, during the first year among homesteaders, and in the second among railroad builders. In his letters to friends and relatives in England he described the land he found so captivating and ‘life in the raw’ as he witnessed it day by day. He wrote ‘of some discomfort, of occasional hardships, but most certainly of absorbing interest and unique opportunity.’ On his return to England in 1913 he was encouraged to publish his letters by Lord Grey, the recently retired governor-general of Canada. The Land of Open Doors appeared the next year, with the letters edited only for factual errors and punctuation. For this reprint, Mr. Bickersteth has prepared a new introduction to the letters he wrote over sixty years ago. (Social History of Canada 29)

Book excerpt: The warm hearted memoir depicting the struggle and eventual success of one woman is timely in that the stories of refugees seeking to make the United States their home is becoming so much apart of our everyday lives. In THE OPEN DOOR, Author Neatris Mitchell takes us on her journey from poor upbringing in Jamaica to success in the media fields here in the U.S. Rarely is a book written autobiographical format distinctive and compelling enough to be interesting to those outside the author's immediate circle of family and friends. Yet with vivid descriptions, emotionally evocative dialogue, and a certain flair for histrionics, Ms. Mitchell portrays her every personal struggle against the overlying theme of this being a struggle we must face some point in our lives. Against such backdrop, the author sets forth her unabashed faith in God as being the guiding light in her life. She relates this faith to all walks of her life, and depends on this power of the Lord to see her through. While the reader will be fascinated by the many obstacles Ms. Mitchell and her family encounter during their growing up period, he or she also be engrossed by the author's undying determination, an effect which will captivate even the hard-hearted reader This is a revealing autobiography, one in which those forces that helped shape Neatris Mitchell's character and personality are highlighted. The author writes with sense of humor and paints expressive portraits of herself and of many other colorful personalities she encounters along the way. Highly recommended for its human drama, the valuable information it imparts and its warm, glowing appeal, THE OPEN DOOR, by Neatris C. Mitchell is a must read for all adventurers and keepers of the faith.

He told his audience, "I maintain that Truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the progressive era, most American policymakers agreed that China represented a land of unlimited opportunity for trade, investment and social reform. Serious divisions existed, however, over policy tactics. One side (mainly manufacturers and academics) advocated a unilateral policy of penetration allied only with Chinese modernizers. The other (primarily financiers and reformists), called for an alliance with other powers, especially Japan, in their dealings with China. In Progressivism and the Open Door, Jerry Israel examines the many factors that led to formal U.S. policy toward China during this era-one that ultimately found a middle ground between the two divisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Krishnamurti (1895-1986) was thought by many to be a modern-day equivalent of the Buddha. In fact, he was once even considered to be the second coming of Christ. While many think it wonderful to live and work in close proximity with such a person, its difficult to understand the depth of what this means and how challenging this might be. In Knocking at the Open Door, author R.E. Mark Lee provides an ordinary person view of what being close-up and working together with such a man means, how it challenges one at every turn, and how it causes one to question ceaselessly, even more deeply than one ordinarily would. Lee offers an insightful, candid, and heartfelt narrative that reveals various unknown facets of the eminent world teacher J. Krishnamurti and highlights his distinctive vision for education worldwide. This comprehensive volume brings alive the practical and everyday interactions Lee had with Krishnamurti during a twenty-year period in India and the United Sates. Knocking at the Open Door shares a clear and honest account that demonstrates the challenges of working with Krishnamurti in running a school that is true to the teaching and yet able to function in the reality of modern parental, student, and educational establishment expectations.

Download or read book Creating Societies written by Dirk Hoerder and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirk Hoerder shows us that it is not shining railroad tracks or statesmen in Ottawa that make up the story of Canada but rather individual stories of life and labour - Caribbean women who care for children born in Canada, lonely prairie homesteaders, miners in Alberta and British Columbia, women labouring in factories, Chinese and Japanese immigrants carving out new lives in the face of hostility. Hoerder examines these individual experiences in Creating Societies, the first systematic overview of the total Canadian immigrant experience. Using letters, travel accounts, diaries, memoirs, and reminiscences, he brings the immigrant's experiences to life. Their writings, often recorded for grandchildren, neighbours, and sometimes a larger public, show how immigrant lives were entwined with the emerging Canadian society. Hoerder presents an important new picture of the emerging Canadian identity, dispelling the Canadian myth of a dichotomy between national unity and ethnic diversity and emphasizing the long-standing interaction between the members of a different ethnic groups.
