Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lances of Lynwood: Chivalry in England In her own introduction to the Lances of Lynwood, Miss Yonge refers her readers to "the bewitching Chronicle of Froissart," the "delectable old Canon," for any explanations of the allusions in her story, and if any readers desire full information on the many details of history that will be met with in these pages, he must still be told to turn to that source. It is part of the charm of the book that the names of valiant knights pass to and fro before the readers eyes with just that air of romance about them which they themselves seem to have felt. To the men of whom Froissart wrote war was a magnificent romance, the noblest task of man, and the virtues it produced were the highest attainable. Froissart indeed saw no other side; and though there are sentences in Miss Yonge's story that show she knew that war was not all courage and chivalry, like the artist she was, she never let that knowledge dim the glory of her knights. Sir Walter Scott, speaking his own thoughts with the lips of Claverhouse, says in Old Mortality that "Froissart inspired him with more enthusiasm than even poetry itself." Miss Yonge, gentle English lady by every influence of birth and education, thought no worse of "the noble canon" than did Claverhouse himself because he confines his beautiful expressions of sorrow to the death of the gallant and high-bred knight of whom it was a pity to see the fall, such was his loyalty to his king, pure faith to his religion, hardihood to his enemy, and fidelity to his lady-love. Ah, benedicite! how he will mourn over the fall of such a pearl of knighthood... But truly for sweeping from the face of the earth some few hundred villain churls... the highborn and inquisitive historian has marvellous little sympathy."
