Download or read book The Lancashire Heeler written by Michael Stonewood and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lancashire Heeler is a small breed of dog that originated in Lancashire, in England. The breed is believed to be a descendant of the Welsh Corgi, due to the fact that the Welsh Corgi was used to drive livestock from Whales to the north western regions of England. In the Ormskirk area, a type of black and tan terrier, known as the 'Manchester Terrier, ' was introduced. It is believed that the Lancashire Heeler breed was created by mixing the Welsh Corgi and the Manchester Terrier. The Lancashire Heeler breed is known to be at least 150 years old. The Lancashire Heeler has traditionally been used as a general purpose farm dog and is capable of both exterminating small vermin, such as rats, and herding cattle. The Lancashire Heeler breed was recognized as being a vulnerable native breed by the English Kennel Club in 2006, which means that there are under 300 registrations of Lancashire Heelers on a yearly basis. The Lancashire Heeler has been known to compete in dog agility trials, obedience trials, showmanship competitions, flyball and herding events. The breed has a short and harsh top coat and a short and smooth undercoat that keeps it warm and dry in any weather. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Lancashire Heeler. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Lancashire Heeler with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Lancashire Heeler is known to be an alert, friendly, energetic and intelligent breed. The Lancashire Heeler is also known to be incredibly affectionate and playful when it is around its direct family unit. Despite its small size, the Lancashire Heeler is a relatively strong breed that enjoys physical exertion. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Lancashire Heeler has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Lancashire Heeler has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Lancashire Heeler's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Lancashire Heeler, raising your Lancashire Heeler from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! Download or read book Our Debt to the Dog written by Bryan D. Cummins and published by Carolina Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Homo sapiens sapiens met Canis lupus lupus millennia ago, the result was Canis lupus familiaris, the domestic dog. Since that fateful encounter, the dog has become, arguably, humankind’s greatest creation. The domestic dog is the most widely distributed species (other than ourselves) in the world, being found virtually wherever people live, and is also the most diversified of species, with literally hundreds of recognized breeds. While we have shaped the dog, it, too, has helped shape human history in innumerable ways. Our Debt to the Dog is a critical historical and cross-cultural examination, through the use of case studies, of this most improbable 15,000-year relationship and an exploration of how this relationship shaped the history of the world. It is also very much an apology to the dog because over the course of the partnership horrific acts were perpetrated against it intentionally and otherwise. Our Debt to the Dog enriches our understanding of the dog and extends our appreciation for the profound complexity of past and present human-canine relationships and the dog’s contributions to our lives and our world.
