Book The Lake Erie Campaign of 1813

Download or read book The Lake Erie Campaign of 1813 written by Walter P Rybka and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 10, 1813, the hot, still air that hung over Lake Erie was broken by the sounds of sharp conflict. Led by Oliver Hazard Perry, the American fleet met the British, and though they sustained heavy losses, Perry and his men achieved one of the most stunning victories in the War of 1812. Author Walter Rybka traces the Lake Erie Campaign from the struggle to build the fleet in Erie, Pennsylvania, during the dead of winter and the conflict between rival egos of Perry and his second in command, Jesse Duncan Elliott, through the exceptionally bloody battle that was the first U.S. victory in a fleet action. With the singular perspective of having sailed the reconstructed U.S. brig Niagara for over twenty years, Rybka brings the knowledge of a shipmaster to the story of the Lake Erie Campaign and the culminating Battle of Lake Erie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 is considered by many to be the most important naval confrontation of the War of 1812. Made famous by the American fleet commander Oliver Hazard Perry's comment, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," the battle marked the U.S. Navy's first successful fleet action and was one of the rare occasions when the Royal Navy surrendered an entire squadron. This book draws on British, Canadian, and American documents to offer a totally impartial analysis of all sides of the struggle to control the lake. New diagrams of the battle are included that reflect the authors' modification of traditional positions of various vessels. The book also evaluates the strategic background and tactical conduct of the British and the Americans and the command leadership exercised by Perry and his British opponent, Commander Robert H. Barclay. Not since James Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book on the subject has the battle been examined in such detail, and not since Alfred Thayer Mahan's 1905 study of the war has there been such a significant reinterpretation of the engagement. First published in hardcover in 1997, the book is the winner of the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award.

This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813 Before the opening of the next campaign on the lake frontier, in 1813, the American authorities fortunately awoke to the fact that any further movement for the recapture of Detroit and the invasion of Canada would have to depend upon the naval control of Lake Erie, and that that in turn depended in a large measure. Upon their own superiority on Lake Ontario. A plan was there fore urged by Commodore Chauncey which, being duly acted upon by the combined naval and military forces, resulted in the capture of the important British positions at York and Fort George, and in the evacuation by the enemy of their controlling defences opposite Buffalo. The first two steps in Chauncey's program had now been successfully taken. The British had been driven from the Niagara River, and the vessels at Black Rock at last were free to move. Preparations had already been made before hand in anticipation of a victory, and the minute the enemy, in their retreat, abandoned Fort Erie, Perry was on hand to hasten the departure. With great physical labor, the vessels were tracked by oxen up against the current of the Niagara, here set ting heavily toward the falls. On May 27 the British evacuated the opposite shore; on June 12 the vessels were above the rapids, but even then this could not have been accomplished had not the sailors had the assistance of several hundred soldiers furnished by Dearborn. These circumstances well show how hopeless the task would have been had the enemy remained in possession of Fort Iirie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Battle of Lake Erie: September 10, 1813 and Reminiscences of the Flagships "Lawrence" And "Niagara" In offering this pamphlet to the public, it may be deemed necessary to offer some apology. There have been many accounts of Perry's Victory, Sept. 10th, 1813, published. Yet in consequence of the unfortunate feud existing between Perry and Elliott and their friends, the accounts partook somewhat of an ex parte character. This is not a correct way to hand down passing events to posterity. In writing history, facts should be given as nearly as possible, not fiction. My father, Sailing Master Daniel Dobbins, was a pioneer in the construction of the squadron, and served actively upon the upper lakes during the war. From conversations during his lifetime, as also memoranda and other papers left by him - in connection with the accounts given by McKenzie, Cooper and Lossing, I have compiled this little book. I hope the reader will excuse the commonplace style of composition, as it is the effort of an illiterate sailor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed for his decisive victory over a Royal Navy squadron on Lake Erie in September 1813 and best known for his after-action report proclamation We have met the enemy and they are ours, Oliver Hazard Perry was one the early U.S. Navy s most famous heroes. In this modern, scholarly reassessment of the man and his career, Professor David Skaggs emphasizes Perry s place in naval history as an embodiment of the code of honor, an exemplar of combat courage, and a symbol of patriotism to his fellow officers and the American public. It is the first biography of Perry to be published in more than a quarter of a century and the first to offer an even-handed analysis of his career. After completing a thorough examination of primary sources, Skaggs traces Perry s development from a midshipman to commodore where he personified the best in seamanship, calmness in times of stress, and diplomatic skills. But this work is not a hagiographic treatment, for it offers a candid analysis of Perry s character flaws, particularly his short temper and his sometimes ineffective command and control procedures during the battle of Lake Erie. Skaggs also explains how Perry s short but dramatic naval career epitomized the emerging naval professionalism of the young republic, and he demonstrates how the Hero of Lake Erie fits into the most recent scholarship concerning the role of post-revolutionary generation in the development of American national identity. Finally, Skaggs explores in greater detail than anyone before the controversy over the conduct of his Lake Erie second, Jesse Duncan Elliott, that raged on for over a quarter century after Perry's death in 1819.
