Book Footloose Labour

Download or read book Footloose Labour written by Jan Breman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a penetrating anthropological study of the working poor in India, Jan Breman examines the lives of those who, pushed out of the agrarian labour market, depend on casual work. Beginning his local-level research in two villages in south Gujarat, the author discusses the mobilisation of casual labour, which is hired and fired according to the need of the moment, and transferred for the duration of the job to destinations far away from the home area. His case-study reveals that the circulation of labour is indicative of an employment pattern which dominates both the rural and urban economy of large parts of South Asia. Elaborating on the social profile of the work migrants, the author argues that their identity is shaped by both class and caste relations and, despite action by state agencies, nothing of significance has been achieved to improve their quality of life.

Book At Work in the Informal Economy of India

Download or read book At Work in the Informal Economy of India written by Jan Breman and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With labour being pushed out of agriculture, Jan Breman analyses why, when, and how the massive shift in production and employment came about. The book is divided into two parts. The first part discusses the past and present path of capitalism and dwells on the abominable condition of theunorganized workforce and the commodification of labour, familiarizing the reader with the concept of informality and its ramifications. The second part, a compilation of well-established, critical readings in the field by the author, elaborates on themes and issues introduced in the first part ofthe book. Drawing upon detailed field accounts and a critique of the informal sector at both analytical and empirical levels, the author examines different aspects of the labour regime that, in the past decades, has become dominant in the world at large, with serious consequences for the labouringpoor in India.

Book India Labour and Employment Report 2014

Download or read book India Labour and Employment Report 2014 written by Institute for Human Development (New Delhi, India) and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first of a series of biennial publications by the Institute for Human Development and the Indian Society of Labour Economics. It provides an overview of the labor market and employment outcomes that the Indian economy has delivered as it globalized. Rapid economic growth in India over the last quarter century has reduced extreme poverty and modestly improved the quality of life of a large segment of the population. However, large employment deficits remain: most jobs created are of poor quality and low productivity in the informal economy. Further, the gains from growth have been distributed unevenly. Growing inequalities and vulnerabilities have generated widespread insecurity of livelihoods and highlighted weaknesses in prevailing social protection systems. This report concludes that structural changes are slow and difficult, and the potential for equitable growth remains unrealized, hampered by policy inertia, resistance from social and economic interests and rigidities of existing systems and perspectives. The report assesses the gains and losses for labor in the first round of globalization and reveals many markers of progress as well as deep challenges. Effective, responsive, fair, and comprehensive labor and employment policy is vital for sustainable and inclusive development: this is the central message of this report.

Book Labour State and Society in Rural India

Download or read book Labour State and Society in Rural India written by Jonathan Pattenden and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind India's high recent growth rates lies a story of societal conflict that is scarcely talked about. Across production sites, state institutions and civil society organisations, the dominant and less well-off sections of society are engaged in a protracted conflict that determines the material conditions of one quarter of the world's 'poor'. Increasingly mobile, and often engaged in multiple occupations in multiple locations, India's 'classes of labour' are highly segmented, but far from passive in the face of ongoing processes of exploitation and domination. Drawing on detailed fieldwork in rural South India over more than a decade, the book uses a 'class-relational' approach that focuses on 'the poor's' iniquitous relations with others, and views class in terms of contested social relations rather than structural locations marked by particular characteristics. The book explores continuity and change amongst forms of accumulation, exploitation and domination in three interrelated arenas of class relations: labour relations, the state and civil society. Marginal gains for labour derived from structural change are contested by capital, local state institutions and state poverty reduction programmes tend to be controlled by the dominant class, and civil society organisations tend to reproduce rather than challenge the status quo. On the other hand, elements of state policy have the capacity to improve the material conditions of 'the poor' where such ends are actively pursued by labouring class organisations. It is argued that social policy currently provides the most fertile terrain for redistributing power and resources to the labouring class, and may clear the way for more fundamental transformations.

Book Health Safety and Well Being of Workers in the Informal Sector in India

Download or read book Health Safety and Well Being of Workers in the Informal Sector in India written by Sigamani Panneer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the core problems of occupational health, safety and well-being of workers in the informal sector in developing countries, where it accounts for most of the rural labour force and a substantial percentage of the urban labour force. The sector is characterised by low incomes, unstable employment and lack of protection in the form of legislation/policies or trade unions. Though some health and problem-solving measures have been introduced, a focused academic effort to address the problems confronting workers in the unorganised sector, or informal economy, is lacking. The book evaluates workers’ physical and mental health in the context of labour migration, social inclusion of minorities and the differently abled, provisions for women workers, demonetisation, occupational safety for hazardous work, and in connection with various areas of informal work, e.g. agriculture, construction, transportation, sanitation, tanning, the tobacco industry, powerloom industry, surrogacy, and self-employment. It provides a well-rounded description of an analytical reflection on the challenges these workers face and focuses on social policy changes to help alleviate them. Accordingly, it offers a valuable asset for researchers and students interested in development studies, the sociology of work, health and labour economics, public health, and social work.

Book The Jan Breman Omnibus

Download or read book The Jan Breman Omnibus written by Jan Breman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Omnibus edition, with an Introduction by Sujata Patel, brings together three classic works of Jan Breman-Of Peasants, Migrants and Paupers: Rural Labour Circulation and Capitalist Production in West India; Wage Hunters and Gatherers. Search for Work in the Urban and Rural Economy of South Gujarat; The Labouring Poor in India: Patterns of Exploitation, Subordination and Exclusion. The idea is to present one significant work in each decade of the 1970s, 1980s, and 2000. The introduction is divided into four sections. The first locates Bremans work in terms of the seventies debate on the transition from feudalism to capitalism. The second analyses his research on the nature of capitalism in Gujarat and the growth of new classes, the displacement of agrarian labour, and the introduction of labour in the migratory circulation. The third examines the debate on the theory of the informal sector on which Breman has made a singular contribution. The final section discusses how Bremans intellectual eclecticism and use of interdisciplinary methods of fieldwork and historical perspective has opened up a new perspective in the area of sociology of development, labour and migration studies. The book also carries an interview of the author by Yolanda van Ede of the University of Amsterdam. In this candid interview, Breman talks, among other things, about his family background, his academic life, and his fieldwork.

Book Rural Labour Relations in India

Book excerpt: Papers from the June 1997 workshop address emerging development trajectories of rural labor relations in India; specifically, they note the presence of rural class conflict and its result, and the relation of such conflict to the nature and impact of state intervention. The contributions identify some vigorous emancipatory processes and examine the limitations and contradictions inherent within them, distinguishing general trends and regional variations.
