Book Labour Markets in Low Income Countries

Download or read book Labour Markets in Low Income Countries written by David Lam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Employment and job creation are key components in achieving economic growth and sustainable development, particularly in low-income countries. The growing size of the working-age population in many developing regions underscores the need to further strengthen labour market structures in the world's poorest countries. Despite the importance of studying emerging labour markets, and investigating which policies are more successful, the evidence is rather limited. Against this backdrop, the joint IZA/FCDO Growth and Labour Markets in Low Income Countries (GLM|LIC) programme was established and has taken important steps to close this gap. Covering topics such as poverty, informality and rural labour, skills training and behaviour, gender inequality, youth and child labour, and migration, this volume presents key takeaways from most recent research in the field. Which development policies will work, which strategies will fail? The authors provide an in-depth discussion of current development programmes, based on the results of new evaluation studies, and derive important policy lessons"--Publisher's description.

Book Perspectives on Labour Economics for Development

Download or read book Perspectives on Labour Economics for Development written by Sandrine Cazes and published by International Labor Office. This book was released on 2013 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing countries, labour markets play a central role in determining economic and social progress since employment status is one of the key determinants of exiting poverty and promoting inclusion. Yet the reality in most developing countries is that the labour market fails to create the jobs in the formal economy that would help individuals and their families prosper. In recognition of these challenges, governments and other stakeholders in developing countries have increasingly prioritised policies and programmes to promote decent work. However, this requires navigating a range of complex issues and debates surrounding the linkages between development processes and labour market outcomes. This volume consists of three main thematic parts. Part I provides a broad overview of key issues, including characterising the employment challenge in developing countries and the link between economic growth, distribution, poverty and employment. Drawing on the literature and country examples, Part II analyses the specific topics of wages, migration and education. The final section shifts to a more normative focus, addressing labour market institutions and policies, along with systematic approaches to quantifying labour markets in developing countries. Perspectives on Labour Economics for Development is an invaluable reference for policy-makers in middle- and low-income countries as well as an ideal handbook for teachers and students of economics and development.

Book The Long Shadow of Informality

Download or read book The Long Shadow of Informality written by Franziska Ohnsorge and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large percentage of workers and firms operate in the informal economy, outside the line of sight of governments in emerging market and developing economies. This may hold back the recovery in these economies from the deep recessions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic--unless governments adopt a broad set of policies to address the challenges of widespread informality. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of the extent of informality and its implications for a durable economic recovery and for long-term development. It finds that pervasive informality is associated with significantly weaker economic outcomes--including lower government resources to combat recessions, lower per capita incomes, greater poverty, less financial development, and weaker investment and productivity.

Book Wage Labour in Developing Agriculture

Download or read book Wage Labour in Developing Agriculture written by Sunil Kanwar and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an empirical study of labour supply and demand issues in semi-arid developing agriculture, explicitly accounting for the presence of the production risk that impinges on farm decision making. It further analyses and empirically tests for the interdependence between the production risk that farmers face in the process of self-cultivation and the labour market risk (or uncertainty of finding off-farm work) that they face when operating in the local labour market. The empirical estimation is based on a unique and relatively comprehensive panel data set relating to a sample of rural households operating in the Indian semi-arid tropics. The presence of unemployment in the local labour market is acknowledged by the formulation and estimation of a disequilibrium model of the labour market, supplementing the partial analyses of labour supply and demand. A comparison of the results of the alternative models, partial and simultaneous, allows a more complete analysis of the issues involved.

Book excerpt: This volume argues that while labour market reforms may be necessary in some specific cases, by no means are labour market policies the main explanation for the widespread increase in unemployment and underemployment across Asia and country specific studies undermine the case for across-the-board labour market reforms.
