Book excerpt: What Is Love? “It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness. A handsome woman talks nonsense, you listen and hear not nonsense but cleverness. She says and does horrid things, and you see only charm. And if a handsome woman does not say stupid or horrid things, you at once persuade yourself that she is wonderfully clever and moral.” - Leo Tolstoy, The Kreutzer Sonata Upon hearing a woman arguing that marriage should never be arranged and always be subject to love, Pozdnyshev asks: ‘What is love?’ He condemns the argument saying that love doesn’t last forever and can quickly turn into hatred. What is Pozdnyshev’s story? Why doesn’t he believe in love? Xist Publishing is a digital-first publisher. Book The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories

Download or read book The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories written by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kreutzer Sonata is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The work is an argument for the ideal of sexual abstinence and an in-depth first-person description of jealous rage. The main character, Pozdnyshev, relates the events leading up to his killing his wife; in his analysis, the root cause for the deed were the "animal excesses" and "swinish connection" governing the relation between the sexes. During a train ride, Pozdnyshev overhears a conversation concerning marriage, divorce and love. When a woman argues that marriage should not be arranged but based on true love, he asks "what is love?" and points out that, if understood as an exclusive preference for one person, it often passes quickly. Convention dictates that two married people stay together, and initial love can quickly turn into hatred. After he meets and marries his wife, periods of passionate love and vicious fights alternate. The work was banned in Russia and the US by the censors.

Book excerpt: A work unprecedented in world literature, this unique volume contains a new translation of Lev Tolstoy’s controversial novella The Kreutzer Sonata, which was initially banned by Russian censors. In addition, available to English readers for the first time is a fascinating and previously neglected constellation of counterstories written by the author’s wife and son in direct response to Tolstoy’s provocative tale, each a passionate attempt to undo the message of the original work. These radically conflicting tales, accompanied by excerpts from family letters, diaries, notes, and memoirs, provide readers with a vivid and highly revealing case study of the powerful disputes concerning sexuality and gender roles that erupted within the cultural context of late-nineteenth-century Russian, as well as European, society.

Book excerpt: *Winner of the Sophie Brody Medal* A moving and uplifting history set to music that reveals the rich life of one of the first internationally renowned female violinists. Spanning generations, from the shores of the Black Sea to the glittering concert halls of New York, The Nightingale's Sonata is a richly woven tapestry centered around violin virtuoso Lea Luboshutz. Like many poor Jews, music offered an escape from the predjudices that dominated society in the last years of the Russian Empire. But Lea’s dramatic rise as an artist was further accentuated by her scandalous relationship with the revolutionary Onissim Goldovsky. As the world around them descends in to chaos, between revolution and war, we follow Lea and her family from Russia to Europe and eventually, America. We cross paths with Pablo Casals, Isadora Duncan, Emile Zola and even Leo Tolstoy. The little girl from Odessa will eventually end up as one of the founding faculty of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, but along the way she will lose her true love, her father, and watch a son die young. The Iron Curtain would rise, but through it all, she plays on. Woven throughout this luminous odyssey is the story is Cesar Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano.” As Lea was one of the first-ever internationally recognized female violinists, it is fitting that this pioneer was one of the strongest advocates for this young boundary-pushing composer and his masterwork.

Book Tales of Sexual Desire

Download or read book Tales of Sexual Desire written by graf Leo Tolstoy and published by Stacey International. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolstoy wrote some of the most disquieting short stories the world has known--these three are no exception. Here, the duels and duality of man and woman are played out in tortured--and sometimes tragic--drama. Above all, the characters featured in these pages bring to life universal truths for the human condition; truths that Tolstoy weaves with an almost unrivaled skill. "Father Sergius" is preoccupied with the material desire for the flesh, while "The Kreutzer Sonata" caused a public sensation for its scathing indictment of marriage. Tolstoy had become convinced that "Christian marriage" was an impossibility, and in both "Sonata" and "The Devil" he launches a tirade against human sexuality and the humiliating sexual ties that bind men to women. Together these three stories provide a picture of a man obsessed with questions of moral, sexual, and religious ambiguity, his treatment of female sexuality still having a resonance today.

Book The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories the Original Classic Edition

Download or read book The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories the Original Classic Edition written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Tebbo. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition contains three short stories that were written after Tolstoy made his conversion to intense Christian beliefs. They are interesting to read together, particularly given the common theme about characters with mistaken ideas about what will bring them contentment. How Much Land Does a Man Need? is a parable which examines greed and contentment through the story of a peasant who believes that he would be satisfied with his life if only he had a little bit more land. The Death of Ivan Ilych tells the history of an outwardly prosperous but spiritually empty man who dies at the age of 45 after a fall in his home. In The Kreutzer Sonata a man on a train relates to a fellow passenger what the circumstances were that led to the murder of his wife. It is, at the very least, important to read these stories. The Kreutzer Sonata is particularly important in the history of literature. At its release, it was banned throughout much of Europe for indecency and has been inspiring debate about feminist issues and women characters in literature ever since that time. Ibsen once described Tostoy as a supremely great writer, when he wasnt being mad. On the evidence of The Kreutzer Sonata, Tolstoy was a supremely great writer EVEN when he was mad.
