Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kitchen Fire and How to Run It: A Manual for the Housewife Showing How to Save Coal, Gas, Labor and Health The Authors' conception in presenting in readable form the facts gathered from a decade's experience with questions of Fuel Economy has not been to offer the public a scientific treatise or dissertation, but to present in simple every day terms a book which all housekeepers can read and understand. The Greatest of all Waste in the World Occurs in the Cooking of Food in the Nation's Kitchen. Economists assert that as a nation we are far more extravagant and wasteful in our use of the necessaries of life than the people of any other nation. Fuel, like food, is a necessity of life, and our profligacy in the consumption of fuel is even more marked and more to be deplored than our wastefulness in the preparation and consumption of food. The aggregate value of food consumed by ninety-three millions of people for three hundred and sixty-five days, computed at twenty-five cents per day only for each individual, amounts to the enormous sum of eight billions of dollars. The fact has been deduced after most careful and painstaking research that there is a spoilage or waste of ten per cent. in the cooking of food for the family consumption. Ten per cent. of the total value of the annual food consumption is eight hundred millions of dollars, which represents spoilage or waste. Cooking is the most general manufacturing business in our country. The money value of the output of the product is far greater than in any other industry. Book Putting a Lid on Food on the Stove Fires

Download or read book Putting a Lid on Food on the Stove Fires written by Stan Tarnowski and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting a "Lid" on Food-On-The-Stove-Fires was written to be a simple guideline for any and all fire departments wishing to make a direct impact on the reduction of stove top-pan fires which will ultimately reduce civilian and firefighter injuries, fatalities, and the loss of property throughout the country. The guideline is based on the recognition and use of available high end heat limiting technology (HEHLT) that can be installed on all electric coil type burners used for cooking. The premise is that the heat limiting sensor technology used in a conventional electric coil burner can stop the maximum heat at below the auto-ignition temperatures for normal cooking oils, hence eliminating the chance for pan fires to occur. The guideline provides for a step by step process that is simple to use, and that every fire prevention office can put together for senior management (e.g. Fire Chief).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cara Segal is a born worrier. She figures her worrying works like a whisper in God's ear - if Cara's concerned about car crashes, kidnappings, or murders, she lets God know, and he always spares her. But Cara never thought to worry about a fire. And one night while she's sleeping at a friend's house, her house catches fire, and her mother and younger sister are both killed. Throughout shiva, the initial Jewish mourning period, Cara can't help wondering about God's role in the tragedy. And what is her father's role in her life now? He walks around like a ghost and refuses to talk about the fire. Cara longs for her family and her home, where sweet smells filled the house as Cara's mom filled orders for her catering business, Julia's Kitchen. Then one day a call comes in for a cookie order, and Cara gets a wild idea. Maybe by bringing back Julia's Kitchen, she can find a way to reconnect with everything she's lost. Complete with a glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms and a recipe for chocolate chip cookies, this debut novel is a joyous tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit. Julia's Kitchen is a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Book A Fire Story

Download or read book A Fire Story written by Brian Fies and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning author and illustrator presents a personal account of the Northern California wildfires of 2017 in this moving graphic memoir. On October 9th, 2017, wildfires burned through Northern California, resulting in forty-four fatalities and the destruction of thousands of homes. In A Fire Story, Brian Fies shares an unflinching account of this tragedy as he and his wife experienced it—including losing their house and every possession that didn’t fit in their car. As the fires continued to burn through the area, Brian pulled together A Fire Story and posted it online. It immediately went viral. He later expanded the webcomic to include environmental insight and the fire stories of his neighbors. A Fire Story is a candid testimony of the wildfires that left homes destroyed, families broken, and a community determined to rebuild. This updated and expanded edition includes thirty-two pages of all-new material, extending the story past the events of the hardcover edition to include updates on the rebuilding, wrestling with insurance, wrangling with contractors, the management of sometimes volatile emotions, and the threats of yet another wildfire.
