Book excerpt: Kentucky Dam, the lowermost and the largest of the multiple-purpose projects of the Tennessee River system, is the key to effective control of discharges from the Tennessee, the largest tributary of the Ohio River. Located at river mile 22.4, Kentucky Dam is only 67.4 river-miles above Cairo, Illinois, and its large reservoir with more than 4,000,000 acre-feet of flood storage capacity occupies as strategic position for the reduction of flood crests on the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The navigation lock at this project forms the lower gateway to the 184-mile long Kentucky Reservoir, one of a chain of nine reservoirs extending a year-round 9-foot navigation channel more than 600 miles to Knoxville, Tennessee, and connects this system of reservoirs to the major inland waterways of the great central Mississippi Valley with outlets for navigation to the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico.

Book Kentucky Lock and Dam Tennessee River Kentucky

Download or read book Kentucky Lock and Dam Tennessee River Kentucky written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 1:100 physical navigation model was built to replicate the Kentucky Lock and Dam at approximately river mile 22.4 of the Tennessee River. The model reproduced approximately 0.1 miles immediately upstream of the dam and approximately 1.9 miles downstream of the dam. The model study was performed primarily to determine navigation conditions that would he associated with the construction of a 1,200 ft lock and 1,200 ft guide wall landward of the existing 600 ft lock and to improve any noted navigation deficiencies. The model was also used to develop structures to decrease the size and strength of a large eddy that forms below the spillway during certain flow conditions and operation of the dam. The model was also used to evaluate any impacts on navigation that would result due to construction of proposed fishing jetties and piers. This report describes all plans evaluated in the model and the results of these plans.

Book excerpt: Cherokee is the tenth major hydro project authorized for construction of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the seventh to be completed. The dam is located at mile 52.3 on the Holston River which unites with the French Broad River just above Knoxville to form the Tennessee River. This main tributary project was the first of several TVA dams authorized under World War II emergency program and constructed on an emergency basis. Although operated primarily for power during the war emergency, Cherokee forms an integral unit in the overall system of water control projects in the Tennessee Valley, and under normal multiple purpose operation aids in reducing main-river flood stages and in stabilizing low water flows.
