  • Author : Leonard Goldstein
  • Publisher : Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780838640043
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book The Origin of Medieval Drama written by Leonard Goldstein and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been widely accepted that the 10th-century liturgical plays developed naturally as a religious entity from the Mass. This approach is critiqued in The Origin of Medieval Drama where Leonard Goldstein places the development of the plays within the socio-economic context of the period, most notably the rapid rise of feudalism. Goldstein argues that the plays were a response by the Church to a decline in faith brought on by the burdens of feudalism on the peasantry. However, instead of revitalising faith, the plays which sought to assure the peasantry of their salvation actually represented and therefore reinforced the emerging private property relation. In looking at the origins of ancient Greek drama where scholars have concentrated more on social and cultural issues, Goldstein develops a Marxist model for the origins of medieval drama.

Book Mambo Mucho Mambo The Dance That Crossed Color Lines

Download or read book Mambo Mucho Mambo The Dance That Crossed Color Lines written by Dean Robbins and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City’s desegregated Palladium Ballroom springs to life with a diverse 1940s cast in this jazzy picture-book tribute to the history of mambo and Latin jazz. Millie danced to jazz in her Italian neighborhood. Pedro danced to Latin songs in his Puerto Rican neighborhood. It was the 1940s in New York City, and they were forbidden to dance together . . . until first a band and then a ballroom broke the rules. Machito and His Afro-Cubans hit the scene with a brand-new sound, blending jazz trumpets and saxophones with Latin maracas and congas creating Latin jazz, music for the head, the heart, and the hips. Then the Palladium Ballroom issued a bold challenge to segregation and threw open its doors to all. Illustrated with verve and told through real-life characters who feature in an afterword, ¡Mambo Mucho Mambo! portrays the power of music and dance to transcend racial, religious, and ethnic boundaries.

Dreams of pirouettes and grande jetes, dreams of attending the best ballet schools and of dancing starring roles on stage. But in Harlem in the 1950s, dreams don’t always come true—they take a lot of work and a lot of hope. And sometimes hope is hard to come by. But the first African-American prima ballerina, Janet Collins, did make her dreams come true. And those dreams inspired ballerinas everywhere, showing them that the color of their skin couldn’t stop them from becoming a star. In a lyrical tale as beautiful as a dance en pointe, Kristy Dempsey and Floyd Cooper tell the story of one little ballerina who was inspired by Janet Collins to make her own dreams come true.
