Book The Kaleidoscope Chronicles Poetry in Three Voices

Download or read book The Kaleidoscope Chronicles Poetry in Three Voices written by Phibby Venable and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wonderful thing about epiphany is that it belongs to us all-- the junkman singing "Ave Maria" at three in the morning, the teenage boy reading something in the smile of the girl in the second row, the child looking through a cardboard tube with mirrors and bits of colored plastic. It is one of life's happy paradoxes that we can catch a glimpse of true perfection--God, harmony, the music of the spheres, call it what you will-- in the simplest of ways, through the simplest of vessels. We do not have to throw ourselves into volumes of philosophy or medieval abbeys to find our epiphanies; sometimes, we just need to dig into the bottom of an old toy chest, and, becoming innocent and curious children once more, put the end of the kaleidoscope up to our eye...

Book excerpt: Introduction in poetry: nature of poetry, tools, history, terms (periods, styles and movements, technical means, tropes, measures of verse, verse forms, national poetry... Poetry (ancient Greek: ποιεω (poieo) = I create) is traditionally a written art form (although there is also an ancient and modern poetry which relies mainly upon oral or pictorial representations) in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content. The increased emphasis on the aesthetics of language and the deliberate use of features such as repetition, meter and rhyme, are what are commonly used to distinguish poetry from prose, but debates over such distinctions still persist, while the issue is confounded by such forms as prose poetry and poetic prose. Some modernists (such as the Surrealists) approach this problem of definition by defining poetry not as a literary genre within a set of genres, but as the very manifestation of human imagination, the substance which all creative acts derive from.

Book The Poems of Basil Bunting

Download or read book The Poems of Basil Bunting written by Basil Bunting and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil Bunting's work was published haphazardly throughout most of his life, and in many cases he did not oversee publication. This is the first critical edition of the complete poems, and offers an accurate text with variants from all printed sources. Don Share annotates Bunting's often complex and allusive verse, with much illuminating quotation from his prose writings, interviews and correspondence. He also examines Bunting's use of sources (including Persian literature and classical mythology), and explores the Northumbrian roots of Bunting's poetic vocabulary and use of dialect.

  • Publisher : Graywolf Press

Download or read book Four Legged Girl written by Diane Seuss and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Diane Seuss writes with the intensity of a soothsayer." —Laura Kasischke For, having imagined your body one way I found it to be another way, it was yielding, but only as the Destroying Angel mushroom yields, its softness allied with its poison, and your legs were not petals or tendrils as I'd believed, but brazen, the deviant tentacles beneath the underskirt of a secret queen —from "Oh four-legged girl, it's either you or the ossuary" In Diane Seuss's Four-Legged Girl, her audacious, hothouse language swerves into pain and rapture, as she recounts a life lived at the edges of containment. Ghostly, sexy, and plaintive, these poems skip to the tune of a jump rope, fill a wishing well with desire and other trinkets, and they remember past lush lives in New York City, in rural Michigan, and in love. In the final poem, she sings of the four-legged girl, the body made strange to itself and to others. This collection establishes Seuss's poetic voice, as rich and emotional as any in contemporary poetry.

Book James Baldwin and the American Schoolhouse

Download or read book James Baldwin and the American Schoolhouse written by Carl A. Grant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-28 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book – written for teacher educators, teachers and admirers of James Baldwin –employs his essays and speeches to discuss how the effects of race and racism enter the souls of African American students and become attached and difficult to dislodge. Yet, his essays also provide educators and students with purpose, meaning and suggestions for how to stand up against racism, develop an authentic self and fight oppression. Whereas this book takes advantage of the full body of Baldwin’s work – fiction, nonfiction, interviews, lectures, speeches and letters – its foundation is three speeches James Baldwin gave in the 1960s on the education of African American children and African American and European American race relations in the United States. The purpose of education, defying myths, freedom, willful ignorance and developing identity are discussed through a Baldwinian lens. African American and European American teachers are encouraged to "Go for Broke" as this book explores the important role Baldwin’s work can play in schools and universities.
