Book After the Juju Man

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chinwuba Iyizoba
  • Publisher : Fourth Dimension Publishing Company Limited
  • Release : 2011-08
  • ISBN : 9789781563317
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book After the Juju Man written by Chinwuba Iyizoba and published by Fourth Dimension Publishing Company Limited. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is the tragedy of Okafor, a village palm wine tapper, who fell from a palm tree and fractured his leg. Relations carried him miles away, to the home of a witch-doctor, or "Juju-man." According to some people, this wise and grey-haired old man had mystical powers. After greetings, gifts were presented. The Juju-man examined the injured man, invoked the gods of the land and poured a libation. Then he caught a cock and broke one of its legs and said to Okafor: "The day you see this cock walk, you will walk." The novel does well to illustrate the culture that frames the context, characters and narrative. African words are introduced throughout the text, traditions are explained, proverbs feature prominently, and character is built through vivid descriptions and flashbacks of past events. There is a real mounting sense of a disintegrating community spirit, as younger generations become more selfish and money-oriented.

Book A Culture of Corruption

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Jordan Smith
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2008-03-16
  • ISBN : 0691136475
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book A Culture of Corruption written by Daniel Jordan Smith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E-mails proposing an "urgent business relationship" help make fraud Nigeria's largest source of foreign revenue after oil. But scams are also a central part of Nigeria's domestic cultural landscape. Corruption is so widespread in Nigeria that its citizens call it simply "the Nigerian factor." Willing or unwilling participants in corruption at every turn, Nigerians are deeply ambivalent about it--resigning themselves to it, justifying it, or complaining about it. They are painfully aware of the damage corruption does to their country and see themselves as their own worst enemies, but they have been unable to stop it. A Culture of Corruption is a profound and sympathetic attempt to understand the dilemmas average Nigerians face every day as they try to get ahead--or just survive--in a society riddled with corruption. Drawing on firsthand experience, Daniel Jordan Smith paints a vivid portrait of Nigerian corruption--of nationwide fuel shortages in Africa's oil-producing giant, Internet cafés where the young launch their e-mail scams, checkpoints where drivers must bribe police, bogus organizations that siphon development aid, and houses painted with the fraud-preventive words "not for sale." This is a country where "419"--the number of an antifraud statute--has become an inescapable part of the culture, and so universal as a metaphor for deception that even a betrayed lover can say, "He played me 419." It is impossible to comprehend Nigeria today--from vigilantism and resurgent ethnic nationalism to rising Pentecostalism and accusations of witchcraft and cannibalism--without understanding the role played by corruption and popular reactions to it.

Book Tears of Forced Marriage

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage is something most people dream of. But for those in a forced marriage, it can be a nightmare. Marriage is the happiest bond between a man and a woman if they love each other. Because there is no love in a forced marriage, this can lead to negligence, loneliness, low self-esteem, unhappiness, spousal abuse, and sometimes death. In Tears of Forced Marriage, author Felicia Idemudia creates awareness about the lives of boys and girls forced into marriage by their parents, especially by the fathers in some countries, cultures, and communities. Through personal third-party testimonials, Idemudia sheds light on the different kinds of forced marriage and the devastating results these marriages can have on women and children. Idemudia communicates that awareness, education, and change are essential for significant improvement to be made. Tears of Forced Marriage gives suggestions as to what can be done to improve the lives of boys and girls affected by forced marriage.
