Book The Journal of William Beckford in Portugal Spain 1787 1788

Download or read book The Journal of William Beckford in Portugal Spain 1787 1788 written by William Beckford and published by Nonsuch Publishing, Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the "Fool of Fonthill" for his eccentricity, William Beckford was ostracized by polite society after being accused of having an improper relationship with a young boy, and soon after was forced to flee England. In early 1787 he arrived in Lisbon, the first stop on a journey to his plantations in Jamaica, but due to terrible sea-sickness, he decided to stay. However, despite his popularity with the Portuguese nobility, the scandal that had forced him to leave England again forced him to move on to Spain in November 1787. Here, in true Beckford style, he became entangled with an older married woman, a young married girl, and a twelve-year-old boy all at the same time. The account of his Iberian sojourn is at times scathing but often witty, as Beckford in turns bemoans his lot and then rhapsodizes about a new love affair. "The Journal of William Beckford" provides a fascinating and entertaining account of Beckford's time in Portugal and Spain, while offering a tantalizing glimpse into the life of someone famous for his hedonistic and unconventional behavior.

Book William Beckford

Download or read book William Beckford written by Timothy Mowl and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Beckford had two lives: one real and sensational, the other an elegant forgery he invented in retirement after the young Disraeli mischievously sent him a homoerotic epic based loosely on Beckford's own career. Biographers have been bemused by Beckford's faked letters and dream encounters with celebrities, but his real life was far more significant: he is the pivotal Romantic between Horace Walpole and Byron. Beckford was reared in exotic isolation in a Palladian palace where he grew up obsessed with dark grottoes, towers and images of the living dead. Rushed into marriage by an apprehensive mother, he indulged his actual passions (both legal and paedophile) until a Tory administration staged a sex scandal that exiled him. In his absence his novel, Vathek was treacherously pirated. Returned to England, Beckford flung his wealth into the creation of Fonthill Abbey, which, by its shadowy vistas and glamorous camp furnishings, paved the way for the wildest excesses of Victorian taste.

Book The Braganzas

  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book The Braganzas written by Malyn Newitt and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two hundred and seventy years, the House of Braganza provided the kings and queens of Portugal. During a period of momentous change, from 1640 to 1910, this influential family helped to establish Portuguese independence from their powerful Spanish neighbors and saved the monarchy and government from total destruction by the marauding armies of Napoleon. The Braganzas also ruled the vast empire of Brazil from 1822 to 1889, successfully creating a unified nation and preventing the country from splitting into small warring states. In his fascinating reappraisal of the Braganza dynasty, Malyn Newitt traces the rise and fall of one of the world’s most important royal families. He introduces us to a colorful cast of innovators, revolutionaries, villains, heroes, and charlatans, from the absolutist Dom Miguel to the “Soldier King” Dom Pedro I, and recounts in vivid detail the major social, economic, and political events that defined their rule. Featuring an extensive selection of artworks and photographs, Newitt’s book offers a timely look at Britain’s “oldest ally” and the role of monarchy in the early modern European world.

Book English Travel Narratives in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book English Travel Narratives in the Eighteenth Century written by Jean Viviès and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century, commonly described as the age of the novel, is also the golden age of travel narratives. In this English edition of Le Récit de voyage en Angleterre au XVIIIe siècle, the genre of the travel narrative receives a treatment based on its development in close relationship with fiction. The book provides a survey of famous travel narratives: James Boswell's journal of a tour to Corsica and account of his trip to Scotland with Samuel Johnson, Laurence Sterne's enigmatic Sentimental Journey, Tobias Smollett's Travels through France and Italy. Negotiating between inventory and invention, these texts invite a reconsideration of conventional generic distinctions. They open up a literary space in which the full significance of the real and fictional journey motif can be explored.

Maxwell takes the reader on a lively journey from Macao to the Amazon forests-each piece in the collection is a reflection of the authors driving passions. Major themes he examines are: the peopling of the Americas, the shaking up of continents, the spirit that took a precocious Portugal into its imperial venture, the play between Portugal's' extensive imperial reach into Africa and Asia and the Americas, and the rise of Brazil and its tumultuous history.
