This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Travel and Natural History, 1868, Vol. 1 N 0 line can be drawn between the social or political history of the present day and that of former times. We are living and acting history now as truly as men did in the days of Miltiades or Julius Caesar. Nor can any boundary be traced between the operations of nature in our own age and those in what are called the geological periods. The world is working out geological history now as surely as it did in the times Of the trilobite or the pterodactyle. It may be that all the forces which have at different times affected the earth's crust are not acting now, or may possibly have lost some of their first vigour. But the great leading principle of change, so far as we yet know, remain the same in kind, if not absolutely the same in degree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Travel and Natural History, 1868, Vol. 1 It is a common belief that geology as a science deals wholly, or almost wholly, with a time earlier than the advent of man upon the earth, and that its proper subject of research ends where human history begins. As Sanscrit, though indispensable in the philosophical study of living tongues, is itself a dead language, so geology, though it may be admitted to give the key to much that would otherwise be hard to understand in the present economy of things, is, nevertheless, frequently looked upon as essentially the investigation of an extinct past. But this estimate, true so far as it goes, is a signally defective one. Its prevalence, by fostering the love of the marvellous, has probably increased the general interest in geological questions; yet there can be little doubt that, at the same time, it has tended to hinder the progress of sound geology. The great truth cannot be too often or too strongly reiterated, that geology is still, to continue the figure, a living language. Not only does it record the history of the earth and its inhabitants during bygone periods, but it chronicles the life and motions of the world around us now. It is, if one may so speak, the physiology of the earth. The physiologist inquires into the structure and functions of the body: the geologist, in like manner, studies the nature and functions of the different forces that affect the surface or the interior of the crust of the earth. He watches their modes of working, and notes especially the results which they achieve. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We have been prompted to this enterprise, to some extent, we own, by an irrepressible desire for something to do, and, at the same time to be of some use to somebody. -no man is safe, none can tell what he will come to, who has no useful employment upon his hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Zoologist, 1896, Vol. 20: A Monthly Journal of Natural History Under these circumstances I must reluctantly resign the editorship of 'the Zoologist, ' and m doing so I desire to express my warmest thanks to the many friends who have helped to lighten my labours. Without such assistance as I have received from them it would have been impossible for me to carry on the undertaking to the present time. In placing the editorial pen in the hands of my successor, the accomplished naturalist, Mr. W. L. Distant, I can only wish-him that measure of support which has been so long accorded to myself, and express the hope that under his guidance 'the Zoologist' - that Storehouse of information on British Zoology - may long continue to flourish. Book The Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899

Download or read book The Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899 written by John J. Michalik and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1899, one of America's wealthiest men assembled an interdisciplinary team of experts--many of whom would become legendary in their fields--to join him, entirely at his expense, on a voyage to the largely unknown territory of Alaska. The Harriman Expedition remains unparalleled in its conception and execution. This book follows the team closely: where they went, what they did, and what they learned--including finding early evidence of glacial retreat, assessing the nature and future of Alaska's natural resources, making important scientific discoveries, and collecting an astonishing collection of specimens. A second thread involves the lives and accomplishments of the members of the party, weaving biographical strands into the narrative of the journey and the personal experiences they shared. This is the first comprehensive, scholarly treatment of the Harriman Alaska Expedition since the 1980s. It features the diaries, letters home, and post-Expedition writings, including unpublished autobiographies, generated by the members of the party.
