Book Clashing Over Commerce

Download or read book Clashing Over Commerce written by Douglas A. Irwin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Foreign Affairs Best Book of the Year: “Tells the history of American trade policy . . . [A] grand narrative [that] also debunks trade-policy myths.” —Economist Should the United States be open to commerce with other countries, or should it protect domestic industries from foreign competition? This question has been the source of bitter political conflict throughout American history. Such conflict was inevitable, James Madison argued in the Federalist Papers, because trade policy involves clashing economic interests. The struggle between the winners and losers from trade has always been fierce because dollars and jobs are at stake: depending on what policy is chosen, some industries, farmers, and workers will prosper, while others will suffer. Douglas A. Irwin’s Clashing over Commerce is the most authoritative and comprehensive history of US trade policy to date, offering a clear picture of the various economic and political forces that have shaped it. From the start, trade policy divided the nation—first when Thomas Jefferson declared an embargo on all foreign trade and then when South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union over excessive taxes on imports. The Civil War saw a shift toward protectionism, which then came under constant political attack. Then, controversy over the Smoot-Hawley tariff during the Great Depression led to a policy shift toward freer trade, involving trade agreements that eventually produced the World Trade Organization. Irwin makes sense of this turbulent history by showing how different economic interests tend to be grouped geographically, meaning that every proposed policy change found ready champions and opponents in Congress. Deeply researched and rich with insight and detail, Clashing over Commerce provides valuable and enduring insights into US trade policy past and present. “Combines scholarly analysis with a historian’s eye for trends and colorful details . . . readable and illuminating, for the trade expert and for all Americans wanting a deeper understanding of America’s evolving role in the global economy.” —National Review “Magisterial.” —Foreign Affairs

Book The Impact of Demographics on Productivity and Inflation in Japan

Download or read book The Impact of Demographics on Productivity and Inflation in Japan written by Mr.Niklas J Westelius and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Japan’s aging and, more recently, declining population hampering growth and reflation efforts? Exploiting demographic and economic variation in prefectural data between 1990 and 2007, we find that aging of the working age population has had a significant negative impact on total factor productivity. Moreover, prefectures that aged at a faster pace experienced lower overall inflation, while prefectures with higher population growth experienced higher inflation. The results give strong support to the notion that demographic headwinds can have a non-trivial impact on total factor productivity and deflationary pressures.

Book International Trade and Political Conflict

Download or read book International Trade and Political Conflict written by Michael J. Hiscox and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unveils a potent new approach to one of the oldest debates in political economy--that over whether class conflict or group competition is more prevalent in politics. It goes further than any study to date by outlining the conditions under which one type of political conflict is more likely than the other. Michael Hiscox focuses on a critical issue affecting support for and opposition to free trade--factor mobility, or the ability of those who own a factor of production (land, labor, or capital) to move it from one industry to another. He argues that the types of political coalitions that form in trade politics depend largely on the extent to which factors are mobile between industries. Class coalitions are more likely where factor mobility is high, Hiscox demonstrates, whereas narrow, industry-based coalitions predominate where it is low. The book also breaks new ground by backing up the theory it advances with systematic evidence from the history of trade politics in six nations over the last two centuries, using a combination of case studies and quantitative analysis. It makes fresh conclusions about the forces shaping trade policy outcomes--conclusions that yield surprising insights into the likely evolution of the global trading system and U.S. trade policy in particular. International Trade and Political Conflict is a major contribution to the scholarly literature while being accessible to anyone interested in understanding and predicting developments in trade policy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fisher's Colonial Magazine and Journal of Trade, Commerce, and Banking, Vol. 1 In the economy of our publication, the same liberality which elicited approbation and deserved patronage, is still maintained and new energies are exerted, to procure with speed and certainty the most authentic intelligence from every colony. We request our subscribers' attention - their te-perusal, in some instances, of articles which have appeared in these pages during the vanished year. We appeal to several of them in evidence of the dis passionate opinions set forth by us on the most momentous questions. One of our earliest numbers pressed upon the British commercial public the vast importance of a railroad or canal across the Isthmus of Panama. The French have anticipated us, - our warning voice was unhappily neglected. We hailed the system of sheep-boiling in the Australian colonies, even at the risk of displeasing the Sydney Herald. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Review of the South and West, 1847: A Monthly Journal of Trade, Commerce, Commercial Policy, Agriculture, Manufactures, Internal Improvements, and General Literature It is a beautiful idea, that in this matter of insurance, somehow or other, it comes to pass, the more particularly, now that mutual sys tems are so much in vogue - of which systems, at another time, we shall have much to say - it is a beautiful idea, that, in every adven ture, the whole community become co-partners, and win, or lose, by the chances which come up. The cat New York merchant, Astor, cannot pass a ship load of cotton sa ely over the ocean, without add ing a few mites, at the same time, to the treasury of the poor old widow, that has invested her every farthing in the company which guaranties his adventure. As Duer expresses it, borrowing from the French jurists, we shall safely say, too, and heartily, Marine Insurance may be justly deemed one of the noblest creations of human enius. From a lofty height, it surveys and protects the commerce 0 the world. It scans the beav ens and consults the seasons. It interrogates the ocean, regardless of its terrors, or caprices, defines its perils, and circumscribes its storms. It extends its care to every part of the habitable. Globe; studies the usages of every nation; explores every coast and eve harbor. To the science of politics it directs a sleepless attention it enters the councils of monarchs; watches the deliberations of states men; weighs their motives, and penetrates their designs. Founding on these frail materials its skilful calculations, secure of the result, it then addresses the hesitatin merchant: Dismiss your anxiety and fears; there are misfortunes t at humanity may deplore, but cannot prevent, or alleviate. Such are not the disasters you dread to en counter. Trust ln me, and they shall not reach you. Summon all your resources? Put forth all your skill and, with unfaltering cour age, pursue your adventure. Succeed - your riches are enlar ed; fail - they shall not be diminished. My wealth shall supply your oss. Rely on me, for your sake, at my bidding, the arm of your ene mies shall be p'aralyzed, and the dangers of the ocean cease to exist. The merchant listens, obeys, and is rewarded.'
