Download or read book The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland Vol 3 of 43 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Vol. 3 of 43: Formerly the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association of Ireland, Founded in 1849, as the Kilkenny Archaeological Society; 1913 The present volume of the Society's Journal is concerned more with the mediaeval than with the earlier history of Ireland. Mr. Westropp's continuation of his monumental work on the Prehistoric Remains of Clare, Mr. Hamilton's topographical study of one of the Roads out of Tara, and Miss Dobbs' note on a Burial Custom of the Iron Age are the only papers devoted to pre-Christian antiquities. Mr. Tuite reports a cup and circle-stone in Westmeath, and Mr. Westropp an earthwork at Glencree (which, however, does not appear to be very ancient), in the Miscellanea. We should also note Mr. Forsayeth's account of his investigation of an ancient hearth. Mr. Crawford continues and completes his most valuable list of the Early Cross-slabs and Pillars, and also contributes a note on the construction of the Oran round tower. Mr. Stephens makes an ingenious suggestion as to the explanation of a panel on one of the Monasterboice crosses. Mr. Forsayeth describes a souterrain in Co. Waterford. These are the only contributions to the study of the period of Celtic Christianity contained in this volume. On the other hand, we have an unusually large number of valuable historical studies on the Anglo-Norman and subsequent periods.
