Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1886, Vol. 6: Containing the Official Record of Its Proceedings, and the Reports and Papers Presented in the Several Sections Three years ago, small-pox broke out in a lumber camp, but a few miles from where I reside. Nine teen persons had it, and one died. At the same time, and in an immediate neighborhood, scarlet fever made its appearance, with a total of twelve cases, and five deaths. The people of the country, for miles around, were excited and alarmed about the small-pox, but paid little or no attention to the scarlet fever. But a few weeks since, in the same neighborhood, diphtheria was introduced into a family of eight children, and while six of the children died, the disease was not allowed to spread beyond that family. Its presence was immediately reported to the local health officer and to the State Board of Health. The house was placarded, and quarantined, and every precaution taken to keep the disease within its original limits; and while mourning continues in that household, the community is saved from the further spread of that most fearful scourge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 36: April 6, 1901 Fournier, of Paris, recently made some studies from the cases of syphilis coming to him in private practice. He found that fully 25 per cent. Of' all females whom he had seen in private practice had contracted the dis ease innocently and undeservedly, and in the discussion of his paper, Ricord thought that that proportion was too low. Of the married females in Fournier's practice, he found that in 75 per cent. Of the cases the disease was unmistakably traced to the husband. In my own private practice I found that in fully 50 per cent. Of the females, the disease was acquired in a perfectly innocent manner, while among the married females the percentage of innocent infections would be 85 per cent., or more. Surely, then, there is reason in the plea' that some thing should be done to prevent the wholesale infection of these innocent victims of marital syphilis. But if this aspect of the subject is dark, that of hereditary syphilis is yet darker, and calls even more strongly for relief.
